LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR
500 E Mitchell Street
Petoskey MI 49770
Wow – the world is moving and changing every
moment. It is hard to actually think about something to
put down in words that will be relevant by the time this
goes to print. Right now, today, life is hard. My hope is
that by the time you are reading this, life is easier and
we all can see a light at the end of the pandemic
tunnel. But today – we are in turmoil. Our Covid case
load is increasing exponentially. The Michigan
Department of Health and Human Services has just put
in a “pause” order, where the schools, restaurants, movie theaters, and gyms
are closing and other services have tighter restrictions.
Our main priority here at the library is keeping staff and patrons healthy,
while maintaining excellent service. Currently, we have canceled all in-person
programs and meetings. We are restricted to 30% capacity. Some staff are
working from home. We are more diligent than ever about proper mask use
and using hand sanitizer. Even at 30% capacity we are not ever worried about
having too many people in the building because it seems as if the residents
are doing what they are supposed to be doing – staying home. Either that or
they just don’t want to go out in the weather – cold, snowy, and very windy.
So the library is quiet. The staff is here, working to continue to bring excellent
reading materials, and entertaining, educational programming to our
residents. We are also thinking of ways to enhance services if we have to
close. What do we provide in-house that is not accessible outside the
building? Notary service, copy and print service, computer use, etc. The staff
is working hard at ways to continue to provide those services even if we have
to close the doors.
Remember though, that even if the building doors are closed, the digital
library is open 24/7 and library staff will do their best to serve you and your
needs during this difficult time. Please let us know how we can help.
Keep on reading,
Val Meyerson
A WORD FROM THE FRIENDS... The Friends of the Petoskey Public Library truly appreciate Val Meyerson and the library staff’s
efforts to keep the library accessible and viable as COVID-19 continues to disrupt our
community and normal life. The library building will remain open for as long as possible, with
curbside service always an option. The library will continue to offer services to area
residents and virtual programming for the entire family during these challenging times.
Area residents have not only been generous with financial contributions, but have donated
many gently used books to the Friends Used Bookstore, the only one in town! Please consider holiday shopping at the
Bookstore or stocking up on reading materials for the winter months. The Bookstore is located in the library’s lower level
and is open during regular library hours.
BOOKSTORE UPDATES The Friends Bookstore welcomes the holiday season! We are featuring a unique book sale collection filled with “like new”
books that are special enough to be given as gifts. Find these items displayed at the front of the store. All Bookstore
proceeds benefit the Petoskey District Library.
