Because she was too young to qualify as an army nurse, Cornelia hid in a baggage car bound for Gettysburg, where she cared for sick and wounded men July and August of 1863.

The depot hospital at City Point
City Point, Virginia became the Union army’s largest depot. The hospital there covered 200 acres and could hold 10,000 patients.

As a surgeon, Fred was a noncombatant and should have been released, yet in 1864 prisoner exchanges had broken down, and he remained imprisoned for ten weeks.
