What is assistive technology?

"Assistive Technology is any object or system that increases or maintains the capabilities of people with disabilities,"

AT can be used to help student’s with communication, academic assignments, social activities, and mobility.

AT can cost as little as nothing or can be extremely expensive. Cost depends a lot on how technologically advanced it is.

Many students with disabilities struggle in the academic world.

AT helps students to achieve IEP objectives and participate in a regular classroom setting as much as possible.

2 Examples of Assistive Technology

For the hearing and seeing impaired, and for those with learning and physical disabilities

Hearing Assistive Technology(HATS)

HATS help in everyday communication.

Their goal is to make hearing easier.

They can be used with or without hearing aids.

Easier hearing=Better Listening=Greater Communication

Amigo T30 is a body-worn transmitter for use in educational settings.

FM receivers are attached to the child’s hearing aid or worn on the body.

Transmitters and Receivers

The teacher wears the transmitter and the student wears a receiver. The transmitter has a microphone that sends the teacher’s voice directly to the pupil’s receiver.

This helps the teacher’s voice to be heard over distances and other noises.

Assistive Technology for Physical Disabilities

A manual wheelchair can help student who have trouble walking or moving to be more mobile.

3 Laws Concerning Assistive Technology

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or the IDEA, are federallaws concerning special education. • IDEA guarantees that children have the right to a free, public education in the least confining environment.• The IDEA amendment of 2004 requires that assistive technology be

considered when planning a student’s IEP.• IDEA also mandates that schools provide AT training not only for the

teacher, but also for the student and his/her family.
