View from Angel Island Angel Island, largest island in San Francisco Bay, W Calif. Explored by the Spanish in 1775, it came under U.S. control in 1851. The U.S. army used the island as a base from 1863 to 1946, and from 1955 to 1962 a radar and missile site was there. From 1910 to 1940 the island was also used to process mainly Asian immigrants to the United States, earning it the nickname ʺEllis Island of the West.ʺ During World War II, enemy prisoners of war were confined on Angel Island. The island is now a state park.

PopUP House Opens its Doors to the Public with Series of Events at Petaluma Prototype
Petaluma, CA – August 9, 2010 – The award-‐winning PopUP House, a standout in modular home design, is hosting a special series of Open House events in Northern California. Bicoastal designer and artist Hally Thacher conceived of the PopUP House and in 2009 installed the original prototype home on her land in the lush hills of Petaluma, where she lives for part of the year. Now Thacher is inviting the public into her home while she’s in residence throughout late summer and early fall, so visitors can experience first-‐hand why the PopUP House was selected as a Top 20 finalist in Dwell Magazine’s 2010 ‘Houses We Love’ competition.
At each Open House guests will have the chance to talk with Thacher about what she learned during the 12-‐week construction phase of her PopUP House and how it feels to inhabit her own creation. She and her team will be on hand to discuss the benefits of design features such as the energy-‐efficient SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) used for the home’s walls and ceilings, the integration of indoor and outdoor living space created by the galvanized steel ‘shed’ overhang and eco-‐friendly recommendations for everything from appliances to furnishings.
Sustainably built from its foundation to its innovative agricultural shed superstructure, House Port’s PopUP House defies preconceptions about prefabricated housing. Thacher and her team have put together a flexible design plan that allows for stylish yet budget-‐friendly customization options, making this ready-‐to-‐assemble home anything but cookie-‐cutter.
Come out for this unique opportunity to see how the PopUP House makes a beautiful home.

A Simple Truth
The keys to great customer service Every customer who walks through your door or visits your web site should be wowed by your
service. This is the simple truth behind the mysterious art of customer retention. And while the
easiest, most basic methods are far and away the most effective, too many companies allow their
customer service to crumble at the foundation, and their customer retention suffers for it. Here
are five surefire ways to make your customers feel appreciated and well-served, ensuring they'll
come back again and again:
1. Greet customers by name and remember them when they visit again. Be it
brick-and-mortar or online, your business can strive for this mini-personalization. A web
site is a simpler matter, as recognizing a returning customer can be automated, but even
brick-and-mortar operations can train or incent employees to really shine at great
customer service. Remembering your customers' names is the oldest trick in the
customer service book.
2. Follow through with your customers after they visit. A call, a thank you card, a
thank you email — whatever is an appropriate response to your customers' business, be
sure to send it! Staying in touch will remind them of the great service and product they
received from you.
3. If an issue does arise, strive for a quick resolution. Good employees, managers,
and customer service representatives make all the difference here. A calm and patient
representative from your company who can resolve any problem quickly and with a smile
will surely be appreciated by your customers. And don't red-tape your customer service
reps! Let them actually help — empowering them to give refunds, discounts, and credit.
Your customers will recognize your generosity and repay it.
4. Strive for employee retention. A good employee is a tremendous company asset.
Walmart was once renowned for its superior employee satisfaction as well as great
service — driven by their employees of course. But of late, Walmart has seen its
reputation for great service tarnished as they no longer place high priority on retaining
great employees. Because good employees have a positive impact on your business, find
and keep the good ones.
5. Always look to improve. Customers notice — and appreciate — improvements in
products and service. This shines in the eyes of customers like no other. Companies that
ask customers what they think of the store, buying process, employees, selection, etc. —
and really listen — are rewarded for their efforts.

MARIN Assemblymember Huffman questions PG&E's SmartMeters Assemblyman Jared Huffman is asking state and federal officials to study and establish whether Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s SmartMeters pose any health risk to Marin resi-dents.
Huffman (D-San Rafael) is calling on the California Council on Science and Technology and the Federal Communications Commission to determine if the installation and use of the me-ters, which use wireless technology to transmit data from ratepayers to the utility, are safe.
Currently, PG&E is installing the SmartMeters statewide at a cost of $2.2 billion. In Marin, SmartMeters have been installed throughout the county, including San Anselmo, Fairfax, Novato and Sausalito.
The town of Fairfax has been very vocal against installing SmartMeters. Last week the town adopted an emergency ordinance that suspends the use of SmartMeters within town limits for one year.
The results of the Structure Group’s field-testing of SmartMeters should be made public by the end of this month or early September, California Public Utilities Commission officials said.
SAN ANSELMO August 31 - deadline to apply for commissions The application deadline is Aug. 31 for seats on the San Anselmo Planning Commission and the San Anselmo Quality of Life Commission.
The seven-member Planning Commission, which has two seats available, meets on the first and third Mondays of each month at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall chambers. The seven-member Quality of Life group, which has one seat available, meets the third Monday of the month in the Town Hall conference room.
Applications are available for downloading on the town's website, www.townofsananselmo.org. For details, call 258-4691.

Strokes of Genius
How two different companies
segmented their markets and won big
Market segmentation is all about looking at all your potential customers and breaking the group
down into smaller, classifiable groups that you can target with messages that will resonate with
their interests. It is always tempting to target your entire consumer base with every piece of
marketing material you have, but generic campaigns designed to appeal to everyone often fail to
impress and move prospects to action. A generic message may even send the message that your
product isn't quite right for particular customers. In other instances, a market is so competitive
that it is critical for a business to find a niche and offer something truly unique.
In either of these cases, you want to segment your market to make sure you're able to customize
your messaging as much as possible, given time and budget constraints. Start by targeting one
very specific type of customer profile. For example, a home repair contractor can target new
arrivals in their service area; a beauty parlor can start by targeting nearby colleges, who bring in
a fresh supply of potential customers every year. When you master one of these micromarkets —
or recognize that it's not quite right for your business — move on to your next market segment.
Here are two companies who were successful in taking a segmentation approach to their
potential customer base.
The president of a management training agency had been marketing to Fortune 500 companies
for more than a year. The competition was remarkably fierce, and her profitability was so low
that she was considering pulling out of the business. One day, she received some unexpected
business from a manufacturing plant. She took the job, and found out there was virtually no
competition for management training in plant manufacturing. Apparently, many businesses
didn't think training on a factory floor was as glamorous as a Fortune 500 executive office. The
executive quickly shifted her marketing to focus solely on manufacturing plants, and within a
year her revenue increased by 80%.
Another company with a market segmentation success story is the Appleton, Wis.-based job
placement firm Career Options, which targets job seekers. Of course, no campaign could
effectively reach all unemployed people. So Career Options profiled its potential customers, did
some research, and came up with a solution. It recognized the most potential in two niche
market segments: recent college graduates and professionals in transition. Each of those groups
had very specific needs unique to their situation, and as such the two marketing campaigns that
Career Options put forth spoke directly to the heart of each. The proof of their success? The
company has flourished as employers seek flexibility in the economic downturn, and has earned
national accolades for five years in a row as one of the top three staffing recruiting companies in
the country.

Kalb's Q&A for Contractors By David Kalb, President of Capitol Services, Inc. While justice is often done, for some victims it comes too late. The Placer Co. District Attorney issued an unlicensed contractor alert after an 87 year-old resident was bilked of $13,500 for a tree removal. The Sacramento Bee reported the unlicensed contractor was arrested, tried on theft and contracting without a license charges, found guilty and sentenced. He is spending one year in jail, was placed on five years probation, ordered to pay back the victim and was given a suspended prison sentence of five years. Unfortunately, his elderly victim died prior to his conviction and never saw justice done… The CSLB Statewide Investigative Fraud Team (SWIFT) had a very busy early August. With a recent sting in Grass Valley and sweeps throughout Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange and Kings counties, they netted a Registered Sex Offender and several other non-licensees. Partnering with various state and local governmental agencies, the Board swept through a number of active construction sites looking for unlicensed activities, verifying compliance with State regulations, and inspecting newly permitted construction projects. As has been the case throughout California, in Grass Valley, the Board also worked closely with the local Contractor’s Association. In their ongoing effort to protect California consumers and level the playing field for licensed contractors, the CSLB has a page on its web site to identify the worst unlicensed violators. These “Most Wanted” are known to prey on vulnerable and unsuspecting homeowners and are involved in home improvement scams.
One of these “Most Wanted” was recently extradited to California where he faces multiple charges of fraud and theft. He is suspected of conning consumers in Butte, Colusa, Mendocino, Napa, Sacramento, Yolo and Sacramento Counties. Q: I will be applying for a new contractor’s license and want to use a specific business name. I’m concerned that the name is already taken and I’ll end up getting my application rejected. Can you suggest a way to ensure that my application – name and all – will be accepted by the CSLB? A: We’re you recently at CSLB headquarters in Sacramento? While waiting in line to deliver some documents, I over heard a prospective contractor asking a very similar question. If establishing a sole owner business, the CSLB will look to see that the name is not misleading. For instance, they would not allow you to use the name “XYZ Remodeling” with a “C-36” plumbing license. On the other hand, if you applied as “XYZ Plumbing” they would not deny this even if there were 20 other companies around the State with the same name. I suggest you register your fictitious business name in the city or county where you intend to operate. If there is already a business registered with the exact name this could become a local issue. If applying as a corporation, there can only be one “XYZ Plumbing Inc” since the Secretary of State regulates this. As to the second part of your question – ensuring that your application will be accepted – it is important that you properly complete all sections of the application, certify at least 4 years in your trade, respond accurately to all questions (including Question 11 criminal background), and study at least 20 hours to pass the law and trade exams. While knowledge is power, knowing where to go for the answers is half the battle. Get expert assistance immediately when you call 866-443-0657, email [email protected], or write me at Capitol Services, Inc., 1225 8th St. Ste. 580, Sacramento, CA 95814. 6 Low-Cost Marketing Strategies By Sharron Senter
Small businesses must be extra imaginative with their marketing efforts in order to attract customers and get them to open their wallets. Even more challenging is that most entrepreneurs have shallow pockets and shoppers are being more selective as a result of the sluggish economy and volatile stock market. The following are six proven low-cost marketing ideas that help small businesses increase sales and generate referrals, ultimately helping you build your cash cow, while spending very little.
Get Out and Walk Next time you walk down a street with high foot-traffic, pay attention to storefront windows underutilized. Approach the store owner and offer to pay a small fee to advertise your business in their window. Imagine, you pay $50 per month for a location that costs someone else $2500 a month in rent. This idea also works in reverse. If you’re the store owner with great window visibility, approach other entrepreneurs and offer them an affordable advertising opportunity.
Special Deal Today Only The next time business is slow, try sending out an email to your prospect list that reads, "Please call me. I have a special deal I can offer you if you call me today. You'll be glad you did! (978) 000-0000. Thanks, Sharron." This method really works. Prospects call because of the urgency you create using such a short deadline and to make sure they don’t miss out on a worthy opportunity. Be careful. You’ll lose credibility with your prospects if your offer isn’t aggressive enough, i.e., 10% off won’t cut it!
Under Your Nose Are your vendors doing business with you? Why not? Here’s a short list of the prospects you should contact within 48 hours of reading this article, your: accountant, attorney, plumber, electrician, daycare provider, housekeeper, greens keeper, mechanic, realtor, friends, family, minister/priest/rabbi, etc., dentist, physician, gynecologist, nail technician, hairdresser, Mary Kay Consultant, marriage counselor, coach, personal trainer, financial advisor, etc. If you and your vendor are not a match, he or she probably knows someone who should be doing business with you. All you have to do is ask your vendor to provide some word-of-mouth about you. At minimum, ask to display your business cards and flyers at their office, or to mention your business in their customer newsletter. Take a moment and make sure people in your immediate circle understand what you’re selling.
Customers on the Fence Before you send off your next proposal, call your prospect and tell her the proposal she requested is ready. Tell her you'd like to forward the proposal, but before you do, ask her what time tomorrow would be convenient to discuss the proposal. Remember, always set up your next appointment before releasing any information.

WORKING AGAINST VIOLENCE
Perhaps workplace violence can’t be totally eliminated, but there are things that can be done to minimize it. Awareness and preparation are key factors.
Evaluate the security of all work sites, establish a security plan for each location, and update the plan on a regular basis. The chance of violence is greater for certain jobs including jobs of contact with the public, working in late or early hours, exchanging money, delivering goods or services, high stress jobs, high crime areas, and if working alone or in small numbers.
Initiate safety measures. Increase security with alarms, closed-circuit cameras or guards. Lock doors to limit public access. Increase visibility with lighted entrances and exists. Shields workers with windows, partitions or high and wide counters. Alter cash handling policies or install drop safes. Arrange furniture so workers cant be trapped by an attacker. Remove potential weapons from desktops (scissors, staplers, and paperweights).
Hire responsibly. No one should be hired without a reference check.
Clearly communicate company policy about violence and reprisals. Employee manuals should clearly explain what behavior is acceptable, what is not, and what will be done by whom, if violence occurs. It should contain written criteria for reporting incidents and repercussions if an incident occurs. Employer response should be predictable and consistent.
Create clear levels of authority and procedures for dealing with the risk of and response to violence in advance. If a threat of violence is identified, potential victims or targets should be alerted along with others who may be affected, such as supervisors or front office personnel.
Train workers to recognize early signs of potential violence. The most commonly mentioned warning signs are: a history of violent behavior, an obsession with weapons, carrying a concealed weapon, verbal threats of harm, being paranoid, being a loner, obsessive involvement with the job, holding a grudge, workplace physical actions, bizarre comments or expressing extreme desperation over recent family, financial or personal problems. Employees should take all threats seriously and report any bizarre or suspicious behavior.
Give workers training in nonviolent response techniques and conflict resolution, to reduce the risk of volatile situations leading to physical violence. Training should also be given in how to respond to a violent situation.
Workplace violence takes a toll on both employers and employees. It affects not only those assaulted, but also those who are witnesses. It can negatively affect the future reputation of a business.
