1. INTRODUCTION This Study Guide has been compiled to help the students of the Weekend Schools of Muslim Community Center (MCC) prepare for the Board Examination. As already announced, a Board Examination will be administered to all students in the 4th, 7th and 9th grades. The students will have to pass this Board Examination to be eligible for promotion to the next higher grade. Parents of students in these three grades are urged to go over this introductory chapter with their child before proceeding to the relevant subject specific material in the following chapters.

1.1 What is the Board Examination? The Board Examination, which is intended to standardize and improve the quality of education at the Weekend Schools of MCC, will be administered in May/June of each academic year in lieu of the Final (2nd Semester) Examination that is usually administered towards the end of each academic year. The Board Examination is only for the students in 4th, 7th and 9th grades; students of all other grades will have their usual Final (2nd Semester) Examination. The Academic Council for the Weekend Schools of MCC has formed the Board of Examinations that will supervise the Examination Committee in-charge of administering the Board Examination. The students will be tested in the following subjects for this examination:

1) Seerah/History 2) Theology (currently called Iman, Ibadaat and Akhlaq) 3) Nazirah/Tajwid 4) Qur’an

The Board Examination will be a comprehensive examination. In other words, students will be tested in all the material taught in the school from 1st grade through the student’s present grade. For example, a 4th grader would be tested in material taught in grades 1 through 4, a 7th grader would be tested in material taught in grades 1 through 7, and a 9th grader would be tested in material taught in grades 1 through 9.

Another important difference between the usual Final Examination and the Board Examination is that the examination may be set and graded by someone other than the student’s regular teacher. Also, the Board Examination will be a common examination across all the Weekend Schools of MCC. In other words, the students of a particular grade in one school would be administered the same examination as their counterparts in the other schools.

1.2 Board Examination Preparation This section gives an overview of this Study Guide and provides information that would be helpful in preparing for the Board Examination. Since we anticipate that the preparation for this examination would take several months, parents are advised to have their child start preparing early.

Note: If the words “4th Grade Edition” or “7th Grade Edition” appear in the header of each page of this Study Guide, sections pertaining to 7th and/or 9th grades may not be included in this edition of the guide.

1.2.1 Theology (Iman, Ibadaat & Akhlaq) and Seerah/History The subject that has been known as Theology to most students and parents in the past has been renamed as Iman, Ibadaat and Akhlaq. This renaming has not changed the content of the course. This change is independent of the Board Examination. The format of this Study Guide reflects this change. Thus, the chapter for Theology in this Study Guide has been split into two sub-sections called “Iman and Ibadaat” and “Akhlaq”. Since the change is relatively new, the word Theology will also be used in this guide to avoid confusion.

The Seerah/History and Theology (Iman, Ibadaat & Akhlaq) questions that will be asked in the Board Examination will be similar (in content) to the list of questions provided in Chapter numbers 2 & 3 of this Study Guide. The actual examination questions may not be identical (word for word) to the ones provided herein; they may be twisted around to test the student’s understanding of the material. In order to answer the actual examination questions successfully, the students would need to understand the underlying material instead of simple memorization of the answers provided herein.

Chapter #s 2 and 3 are subdivided into sections pertaining to 4th, 7th and 9th grades. The 4th graders’ examination questions will be from the material provided in the 4th Grade section. Since this will be a comprehensive examination, some of the 7th graders’ examination questions will be from the material provided in the 4th Grade section, while the majority of their questions will be from the material in the 7th Grade section. Similarly, some of the 9th graders’ examination questions will be from the material provided in the 4th Grade and 7th Grade sections, while the majority of their questions will be from the material provided in the 9th Grade section. With the exception of those questions that ask a student to recite something, the examinations for both subjects will be written examinations (not oral) for all the three grades.

The correct answers for all the questions are underlined in this Study Guide. In the examination, in case of multiple choice questions, the student is expected to circle/select only one, most correct and/or complete, answer. In case where the answers are essay type, the student is not expected to memorize the answers provided in this Study Guide, word for word; however, he/she is expected to include all the key points of the answers provided in this Study Guide in his/her answers.

For each of the two subjects, it is anticipated that the 4th graders would be asked to answer about 40 to 70 questions from the pertinent list in this guide. The 7th graders may be asked to answer about 45 to 75 questions for each subject, while the 9th graders may be asked to answer about 50 to 80 questions for each subject.

Although the answers to the questions are provided in this Study Guide, for a thorough understanding of the subject, the student is urged to read the recommended books for the subject(s). The student may contact his/her teacher for more information. A copy of the applicable syllabus is provided at the beginning of each of the sections to aid in examination preparation.

1.2.2 Nazirah/Tajwid For Nazirah/Tajwid, the students will be asked to demonstrate their proficiency in areas listed in Chapter 4 of this Study Guide. The expectations for each of the three grades are listed separately in their respective sections. The 4th and 7th graders will be asked to demonstrate, orally, their proficiency in the subject. In addition to demonstrating their proficiency orally, the 9th graders will also have to provide written answers to questions relating to topics given in the 9th Grade section.

1.2.3 Qur’an For Qur’an, the students will be asked to demonstrate their proficiency in areas listed in Chapter 5 of this Study Guide. The expectations for each of the three grades are listed separately in their respective sections. In addition to demonstrating their proficiency orally, the students will also have to provide written answers to questions.

1.3 Acknowledgments We would like to thank all the teachers, heads of the departments and staff of the Weekend Schools who have helped in the compilation and review of this Study Guide. JazaakAllahu Khairun.

When the Sultan found the sea-approach to the port all blocked up, he came up with a unique plan. It is considered as one of the most ingenious plans in the history of naval warfare. There was a 10-mile long mountainous route at the back of the port. The Sultan stretched out long wooden planks all along the entire route. The planks were made slippery by applying grease over them. Then he mounted his war ships over the greasy planks. His brave soldiers pushed the ships and glided them straight into the waters of Golden Horn, the harbor of Constantinople.

95. Why was Sultan Sulaiman I called “Sulaiman-e-Azam”? Sultan Sulaiman proved to be the greatest Ottoman ruler, and was called “Sulaiman-e-Azam” – Sulaiman the Great. The empire reached the zenith of its glory, splendor and power during his rule. He was a just and wise ruler, a superb statesman and a great administrator. Turkish arts, sciences, civilization and culture flourished a great deal during his rule.

96. What did Sultan Abdul Hameed II say to Theodore Herzl, who wanted to purchase Palestine? Theodore Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism, tried to bribe him with an enormous sum of money to purchase Palestine for Jews. Fearlessly, Sultan Abdul Hameed replied, “Palestine belongs to the Muslim Ummah. My people have fought hard for this land and irrigated it with their blood. The Jews might as well keep their millions. If the Khilafah State fell one day, they can then take Palestine without any price. But as long as I am alive, I would rather be cut to pieces than to see Palestine cut off from the Khilafah State.”

97. What is the meaning of “Ata Turk”? Why was Mustafa Kamal Pasha considered the “Savior of Turkey”?

Ata Turk means ‘Father of the Turks’. He successfully defended the Bosforus Channel against the British and the French. In 1916 C.E., he defeated the Russian forces and got several Turkish territories liberated. In 1920 C.E., the Turks fought a battle against the Greeks under his command, and drove out the Greeks from the Turkish territories within a period of one year. The Turkish people were delighted. He became a national hero. The people hailed him as their “Savior”.

98. When was the Institution of Caliphate abolished and Why? Institution of Caliphate was abolished on March 3, 1924 C.E. Mustafa Kamal Pasha wanted to keep Turkey a secular, democratic and independent nation within its natural boundaries, without the influence of Islam.

99. Write briefly, in your own words, some of the anti-Islamic policies enforced by Mustafa Kamal Pasha. Until the 19th century, the Turks showed little national consciousness, and totally identified themselves with Islam and Muslims. Mustafa Kamal Pasha tried to eliminate every trace of Islam, Islamic culture and Islamic values from the lives of the Turkish nation. He enforced such anti-Islamic polices as the banning of Hijab & Purdah, compulsory wearing of Western dress, absolute equality between men and women, prohibiting Islamic Prayers, closing of the Islamic Schools, persecution & execution of Islamic Scholars, use of Latin alphabet instead of Arabic alphabet, and instituting Sunday as the legal holiday. He was cursed by millions of Turks, particularly in the villages and small towns because of his terror against Islam.

100. Write at least five (5) main reasons, in your own words, which caused the downfall of the Ottoman Empire. 1. Love of Luxuries and Moral Laxaties: Love for luxuries and moral degradation had been the main reasons for the downfall of many dynasties. The Ottomans fell into the same trap. Many Ottoman Sultans had considered building of beautiful palaces (harams), and lavish living as the sole purpose of their lives. Beautiful and dazzling women from Europe found access to their palaces, and got entangled in palace politics and intrigues.

2. Indifference to Science and Technology: The surrounding European powers had made considerable progress in military, economics, science, arts and technology; the enlightened Muslims of Spain were responsible for initiating their progress in these fields. One wonders how and why the Ottomans remained utterly indifferent to all those great developments taking place in their immediate environment. Their rival Christian powers invented new, more advanced and dangerous military equipment, and kept on modernizing them. The Ottomans never awoke from the sound slumbers. They remained entangled in conservative traditions and rigidities. Consequently, they remained behind in scientific and technological advancements, and fell an easy prey to the rival progressive forces.

3. Disunity among Muslims and Disintegration of the Empire: The rival Christian powers of Europe remained united and organized. They exploited the inner intrigues and insurgencies coming from within the Muslim ranks from time to time. They eventually succeeded in reducing the great Ottoman Empire to a petty and powerless state.

4. Nationalism against the spirit of Islam: The non-Islamic concepts of nationalism, patriotism and secular democracy isolated Turkey from the rest of the Muslim Ummah, and played a negative role in the Ottomans downfall.

5. Hereditary Kingship: Hereditary Kingship caused the destruction of Umayyads, Abbasids, Fatimids, and many other dynasties. The Ottoman Empire also collapsed for the same reasons. Had they focused on developing Islam’s consultative system of democracy and nominated qualified people based on their character, virtue, piety, wisdom and experience, they could have remained in power.

6. Power Struggle: Conspiracies, power-struggles, exiles of the princes, and even brutal murders took place among the royal families for choosing of successors. Corrupt and inefficient rulers who lacked administrative abilities and talents came to power to lead the great empire.

101. Who was Sinan? What famous monuments did he construct? The famous architect Sinan was patronized by Sultan Sulaiman the Great. The buildings constructed under his rule reflect the genius of Sinan. He built the Sulaimania mosque (named after Sultan Sulaiman) and Salimiyah mosque, built in the memory of his father. Sinan built beautiful mausoleums for the wife of Sultan Sulaiman,

Khurram Suttana, and another for his daughter, princess Mahr-o-Mah. He built the mausoleums of Imam Abu Hanifa at Baghdad, and Jalaluddin Rumi at Konia. He constructed numerous bridges; the most famous was Tschekmedji. He also constructed the seven-hilled city of Bosphorus.

94. Hajj is the 5th pillar of Islam, and is a pilgrimage to Makkah during the month of Dhul-Hajj. Is Hajj Fard on every Muslim?

Hajj is fard (obligatory) once in a lifetime for those who are physically, mentally, and financially able.

95. What is the difference between Hajj and Umrah? Hajj (which is the fifth pillar of Islam) is obligatory on all Muslims who can afford it. It is obligatory only once in one’s lifetime and is a pilgrimage to Kabah in Makkah involving performance of specific rituals during the specified days in the month of Dhul-Hijjah. On the other hand, Umrah (which is not part of the five pillars of Islam) is optional and can be performed anytime during the year in Makkah. Some of the rituals of Hajj are common with those of Umrah.

96. What is Meeqat? Meeqat is a specified point or station (outside the geographical limits of Makkah) before which all people approaching Makkah for performing either Umrah or Hajj should enter into a state of Ihram. Meeqat could vary with the direction that the pilgrim is coming from, and has been specified by Prophet Muhammad (S).

97. What is Ihram? Ihram means making an intention to perform a Hajj or Umrah. However, loosely speaking, Ihram is the specified clothing/covering for people performing Umrah and/or Hajj. For men, this is just two sheets of unsewn cloth, one to cover the upper part of the body and the other to cover the lower part. For women, Ihram comprises of ordinary Islamic clothes (loose fitting so as not to show the contours of their bodies) covering from the head down to below the ankles, without covering the face. (The simplicity of Ihram reminds the pilgrims of their position in relation to Allah (SWT), and that all their expensive clothes and possessions will be left behind in this world upon their death).

98. What is Tawaf? It is the Circumambulation (going around) of the Ka`bah seven times (in a counter-clockwise direction, starting at the point of Hajr-e-Aswad).

99. What is Talbiya? It is the following dua that the pilgrims repeat after getting into the state of Ihram, and until they cast stones on the Jamarat on the 10th of Dhul Hajjah: “Labbaika Allahuma Labbaik, Labbaika La Sharika Laka Labbaik, Innal Hamda, WaNaimata, Laka WalMulk, Laa Sharika Lak”, which means, “Here I am O’Lord, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Surely the praise, blessings and the kingdom are for You. You have no partner”.
