BSHSSeniorReceivesHistoryScholarshipBayShoreHighSchoolseniorCarlSicilianohasbeenselectedasthesecondannualrecipientoftheHonorablePeterFoxCohalanScholarshipinAmericanHistoryforIslipTownHighSchoolSeniors.Thescholarship,awardedannuallybytheRobertDavidLionGardinerFoundation,isgrantedtoagraduatingseniorinIslipTownwhowillpursueanundergraduatedegreewithaconcentratedstudyinAmericanHistoryand/orAmericanGovernment.CarlwillreceiveanAdvancedRegentsDiplomawhenhegraduatesinJune2017.HehasdistinguishedhimselfasastudentofhistorythroughouthistimeatBayShoreHighSchool.Inadditiontoattendingeventswithveteransattheschool,heisanamateurcollectorofWorldWarTwomemorabilia.Carlhasalsoshownhimselftobealeaderamonghispeersandinhiscommunity.HeachievedtherankofEagleScoutin2014.HehasservedasaCubScoutDenChiefsince2011,inadditiontoholdingnumerousotherleadershippositionswithinlocalBoyScoutorganizations.Carlisalsoanavidbowler,anadvanceddownhillskierandplaysboththeclarinetandbassclarinet.Carl’swinningessay,entitledHowtheGreatWarWasSecondaryComparedtotheInfluenzaEpidemicof1918,demonstratedanalyticalabilitybeyondhisyears.CarlplanstoattendSuffolkCountyCommunityCollegeinthefallandlatertransfertoSt.Joseph’sCollege.HehopestobecomeahistoryteacherandtosomedayreturntoBayShoreHighSchooltomentorfuturegenerationsofhistorystudents.“ItisanhonortohaveoneofourstudentsrecognizedbytheRobertDavidLionGardinerFoundation,”saidBayShoreSchoolsSuperintendentJosephBond.“IhavehadtheopportunitytospeakwithCarlSicilianoonmultipleoccasionsandwasthoroughlyimpressedwithhisdeepunderstandingofhistory.HeistrulyamongthebestandbrightestofBayShoreHighSchoolandisatestamenttothewayinwhichourteachersfosterthepassionofourstudents.”TheHonorablePeterFoxCohalanScholarshipinAmericanHistoryforIslipTownHighSchoolSeniorsisnamedfortheHonorablePeterFoxCohalan.PeterFoxCohalanhasarichfamilyhistorybasedinservicetothecommunity.Hisfamilyroots,whichcanbetracedbacktotheAmericanRevolution,includefivegenerationsinpubliclifewithfourgenerationsholdingdistinguishedpositionsonNewYorkStatehighcourts.AformerIslipTownSupervisor(1971-1979)andSuffolkCountyExecutive(1979-1986),CohalanrecentlyretiredfromtheNewYorkStateSupremeCourtwhereheservedformorethan25years.Activelyinvolvedinhistoricpreservationforfourdecades,theHonorablePeterFoxCohalaniscurrentlyservingastheSuffolkCountyHistorian.HealsoservesontheBoardofTrusteesoftheRobertDavidLionGardinerFoundation.TheRobertDavidLionGardinerFoundation’smissionisinspiredbyRobertDavidLionGardiner’slifelongpassionforNewYorkhistory.Untilhisdeathin2004,

RobertDavidLionGardinerwasthe16thLordoftheManorofGardiner’sIsland,NY.TheGardinerFamilyandtheirdescendantshaveownedGardiner’sIslandsince1639bywayofaroyalgrantfromKingCharlesIofEngland.TheGardinerFamilyhasalsohadstrongtiestotheTownofIslipsincethe1700s.TheRobertD.L.GardinerFoundation,establishedin1987,primarilysupportsthestudyofNewYorkStatehistory,withanemphasisonSuffolkCounty.
