Blue Devils Fought Injuries,Finish 12-5-2 in Girls Soccer

By DAVID B. CORBINSpecially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Injuries just would not leave thisyear’s Westfield High School girlssoccer team alone, but the Lady BlueDevils battled the adversity to finishwith a 12-5-2 overall record and a10-1-1 record to place second intheir conference.

“I think a 12-5-2 record was avery successful season, especiallywith all of the injuries we endured. Our conference, we actually finishedwith the same record as Scotch

Plains-Fanwood but got secondbased on head-to-head play,” BlueDevil Head Coach Alex Schmidtsaid.

During the course of the season, five seniors, including both co-cap-tains, two juniors and a sophomoreexperienced significant injuries.

“Injuries in sports are one of thosethings you never plan for. We cameinto the season having two girls withACL tears, both who would havehad major roles on our team thisyear, both seniors (Becca Kraus and

Leia Desclazi). During our firstscrimmage Emily Sickles, also asenior who would have started, toreher ACL. During our first game, sophomore goalkeeper Hailey Reillyendured a concussion and duringthe following game senior captainMary Randazzo also got a concus-sion,” Coach Schmidt pointed out.

In addition to the injuries, badtiming with them also made situa-tions worse. Randazzo played in onlyfour games and got re-injured just

DEFENSE RECORDED 8 SHUTOUTS, MORGAN 11 GOALS

Blue Devil Soccer Boys Knew‘Defense’ Was First Priority

By DAVID B. CORBINSpecially Written for The Westfield Leader and The Times

Defense was the first priority forthis year’s Westfield High School boyssoccer team that recorded eight shut-outs and allowed only 18 goals in 19games, while netting 44 goals to fin-ish with a 13-6 record.

The Blue Devil boys finished 7-3in conference play, 3-1 in non-con-ference play, went 1-1 in the countytournament, losing to Scotch Plains-Fanwood, 2-1, in double overtime inthe semifinals, and went 2-1 in thestate tournament, dropping a 2-1 de-cision to top-seeded Watchung Hills.

Despite such a fine defensive show-ing, the Blue Devils and Head CoachEric Shaw had their work cut out forthem right off the bat and for half theseason with injuries to co-captain/back Tom Randazzo and senior backDanny Kuhn, which put more pres-sure on junior goalkeeper KorynKraemer, who finished with 74 saves.

“Defending is a priority. We had tomove some guys back with injuries toKuhn and Randazzo. Koryn came upbig, and we got stronger when Kuhnand Randazzo came back in Octo-ber,” Coach Shaw said.

Kraemer was selected Second TeamUC and AC First Team. Senior backSean Tracey, a All-Union County(UC) and All-Conference (AC) Hon-orable Mention, was also selected theteam’s Defender of the Year, and se-nior Rob Ball was also strong in thebackfield.

“Rob and Tracey were key in theback. Rob got better as the seasonwent on,” Coach Shaw said.

Although spending a large portionof his time defending in the back, senior co-captain Jeremie Dedeamanaged to shoot up front and nettwo goals while contributing five as-sists. Dedea was selected First TeamAll-UC and AC Honorable MentionCoaches Poll.

“He started in the midfield but hadto drop in the back. He was able tocontribute offensively because of hisspeed and physicality,” Coach Shawsaid.

Senior co-captain Zach Sheil setup many plays with his powerfulthrow-ins and accurate corner kicksand kept opposing forwards in check, but he also managed to get in on thescoring with three goals. Sheil re-ceived First Team UC and AC recog-nition and was the team MVP.

“Zach was a big part of our de-fense. He had to shut down theirforwards,” Coach Shaw said.

Senior forward Alik Morgan, whowill play at Western Florida Univer-sity next fall, used his finesse, quick-ness and outright speed to outmaneu-ver opposing defenders and led theteam with 11 goals. Morgan was se-lected First Team UC and AC and wasnamed team Offensive Player of theYear.

“What a surprise! He was a greataddition with his speed and creativ-ity. He was able to break defendersdown. He had a few shots that justmissed by an inch or two,” CoachShaw said.

One of those very close shots cameat the very end of regulation in theUnion County Tournament semifinalgame against Scotch Plains-Fanwood,when the game was tied 1-1.

Junior midfielder Mike Prosukmade good use of his height andleaping ability to notch seven goals, while adding four assists. Prosuk wasselected First Team UC and AC.

“We played him out wide at times, because teams knew he was going toget a throw-in from Sheil. It was adefinite plus with his height. He wasvery quick and crafty with the ball fora big guy,” Coach Shaw said.

Senior Mate Landeka also got him-self into the thick of the offensiveonslaught and finished his season with

six goals and five assists. Landekawas selected UC and AC HonorableMention.

“We thought he was going to be amain goal scorer. We coached himon. He missed two or three games atthe beginning of the year due to in-jury,” Coach Shaw said.

Offensively, senior forwards BryonLessner and Sam Sokolin, Kuhn andjunior forward Matt Williams eachnetted three goals. Senior forwardJack Dumont and junior midfieldersDereck Amadye (UC HonorableMention) and Kevin Irving each firedin a goal.
