Download - CCGA Foundation 2014 Annual Report
A Unique YearThe Foundation’s annual report allows us to pause and reflect on our successes over the past year, as well as assess what still needs to be done. One important activity that numbers, charts and lists don’t convey is the work Foundation trustees, College faculty and staff, students, alumni and members of the community began in August 2014 – revisiting the strategic plan and direction of the College.
Coastal Vision 2021 will launch in September 2015. But between August 2014 and now, the Strategic Planning Committee and work group chairs met multiple times to define key themes, strategic goals and objectives, and the action steps it will take to get from here to there.
The focus will be on academic excellence, student enrichment, institutional distinction, organizational development and sustainability, and community engagement and partnerships. That’s a fine crop to be sowing for the future of Coastal Georgia and this community.
The enclosed information represents the fruitful harvest for the Foundation’s fiscal year 2014. We are firmly committed to our stewardship of these resources. Thank you for your support.

Seventy-two rising sixth and seventh graders of African-American heritage from the region completed a rigorous four-week program of academic preparation focused on mathematics and language arts at the College of Coastal Georgia during June 2014. The program was made possible by the College Foundation and the sponsorship of Fourteen Black Men of Glynn, Inc., and some other private funding.
Fourteen Black Men of Glynn is an organization of African-American males
in academic and licensure professions who are committed to making a positive change by serving as mentors and financial supporters for this program. Many have community leadership positions - mayor, judge, commissioners and clergymen.
For the College and the community to be truly successful, we need the talents and contributions of everyone. This program provides the opportunity to retain talented local students, such as those who serve as mentors in this

outreach program, and to develop the potential for at-risk youth to succeed in higher education. Graduates of the program give it high marks, describing it as life changing.
An incalculable impact
The annual cost of the Minority Outreach Program is approximately $60,000, but the impact is incalculable. Such tightly-focused intervention programs seldom qualify for public funds at the state or federal level. Gifts from concerned and committed members of this community, such as Fourteen Black Men of Glynn, Inc., are what have enabled The Boys of Summer initiative to continue.
As the University System of Georgia continues to focus on college retention, progression and graduation and Governor Deal emphasizes initiatives such as Complete College Georgia, we encourage community support aimed at increasing students’ success in education, both in literacy and in improved high school graduation rates. After all, students can’t Complete College Georgia if they don’t even start college.

St. Simons Island residents Greer and Laura Brown provided the College of Coastal Georgia with a gift in December 2014 that will keep on giving to the campus, the School of Business and Public Affairs, and business students in perpetuity. Through the College of Coastal Georgia Foundation, they established the permanently-endowed Brown Family Executive-in-Residence Program.

connections with these executives that can translate into summer internships and personal references. The faculty experience is also enhanced and the contacts made with other high-level executives through the executive-in- residence can result in exciting guest lectures in the classroom as well as informal discussions open to the community. Reg Murphy, our current executive, is an excellent example of our program’s quality.”
Executives-in-residence Bring Energy, A Perspective Based On Their Personal Business And Leadership Experiences.
“While attaining my MBA at the Terry College of Business, the Executive-in-Residence at the time [Earl Leonard, retired Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs of the Coca-Cola Co.] had a profound impact on my professional and personal perspective. He not only helped me reason through the practical applications of my degree, he emphasized the importance of balancing family with my career path, a lesson that Laura and I believe has contributed substantially to our family’s happiness,” Greer Brown said, explaining the inspiration for the gift. Brown is Senior Vice President of Brown-Rose Wealth Management Group, Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, & Smith Inc.
Corporate Partner Thank you, Ajax Building Corporation Ajax Building Corporation is a valued corporate partner for the College of Coastal Georgia. Not only has the company built the iconic buildings that represent the new College campus, but also they have invested in higher education through establishing need-based scholarships for the students attending classes, studying, sleeping and dining in those structures.
Investing in higher education and economic development
The University System of Georgia Foundation, the College of Coastal Georgia and the College of Coastal Georgia Foundation established a memorandum of understanding on May 28, 2014 which will transfer $15,000 from the USG Foundation to the College Foundation to offer need-based scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year. Ajax Construction is the generous sponsor of the gift – an investment in higher education and in the economic development of south-east Georgia through scholarships for talented students needing financial assistance to stay in college and graduate on a timely basis.

Community
Commemorating the 50th Class Reunion of the Glynn Academy Class of 1967, class members are rallying to establish an endowed scholarship at the College of Coastal Georgia by fall 2017. In December 2014, a generous classmate sponsored a $25,000 challenge grant to the Class of 1967. The Glynn Academy Class of 1967 Endowed Scholarship would provide financial assistance to recent Glynn Academy graduates attending the College of Coastal Georgia.
“Through the years we have participated in many worthwhile projects as a class in assisting classmates in need, honoring our distinguished teachers, and providing funds for the Glynn Academy PTA. All these projects have brought our class together and helped us all to understand how fortunate we are to be part of the 1967 class,” Gene Ussery said, in support of the scholarship. “It would allow us to create a legacy in memory of our class, commemorating not only our graduation 50 years ago, but also honoring our classmates who are no longer with us. I believe it would allow us to give back to the community that gave us so many memories and opportunities.”
Creating a legacy in honor of the Glynn Academy Class of 1967
Billy Brewer, who attended Brunswick Junior College for two years following his Glynn Academy graduation in 1967, counted 123 Glynn Academy Class of ‘67 classmates when he reviewed his BJC yearbooks and noted there probably were more who attended but weren’t on campus when class photographs were made.
“BJC was a starting point of choice for many of us,” Brewer said, “and now, 45 or 46 years later we have the opportunity to apply our blessings and pay it forward for those who could use a helping hand. Our newly created Glynn Academy Class of ‘67 Scholarship Fund may be just the starting point for those deserving achievers and scholars who may not have the family financial resources needed to pay for their place in a CCGA freshman classroom.”

Corporate Partners
In keeping with the College presidential inauguration theme of Celebrating Service: Students, Culture, Community, State, Country in April 2014, the College Foundation saluted outstanding community partners making a difference in the lives of students and in the community in conjunction with the inauguration luncheon prior to the investiture ceremony of Dr. Gregory F. Aloia as the College’s fifth president. A Focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
The 2014 Business Partner of the Year was Pinova, Inc. The company was cited for their corporate support and participation in College programs such as Expanding Your Horizons Day and the Math and Sciences Expo, serv-ing as the College’s community partner in promoting education and careers in science and engineering since 2011.
The College hosts two programs on campus during the academic year for participating regional schools aimed at encouraging students to pursue studies
in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a collaboration between the College and the Glynn County School System for girls in grades 5-8. The one-day conference provides 250 girls the opportunity to participate in interactive workshops with College professors.
The annual Math & Sciences Exposition includes Academic Bowl competitions and interactive workshops for middle and high school students from Brantley, Camden, Charlton, Glynn, McIntosh and Wayne counties.

The Elks Lodge of Brunswick provides scholarships through the College Foundation in honor of Emory Dawson, a remarkable veteran who suffered a spinal cord injury in the Vietnam War. Dawson earned not one, but three associate degrees from the College after he returned to Glynn County. He served as president of the student government association (known then as the student council) for two years. Although paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair, he was active in numerous humanitarian organizations, showing the depth of the determination and heart of this man while he lived. His spirit continues to bless the community through scholarships funded by the Elks to benefit disabled students attending the College of Coastal Georgia.
One of the 2014-2015 scholarship recipients was Crystal Jones ‘16. Jones was born with spina bifida, a disabling birth defect of the spinal column, and depends on a wheel chair to get around on campus. In 2010, she lost one of her legs when the device used to straighten

it cut off circulation to her leg and foot, requiring amputation. She says that was the hardest time in her life, emotionally, but she was still determined to continue her studies during her hospitalization. In 2013, she received an associate degree in art. She’ll complete her B.B.A. coursework at the end of fall term 2015 and realize one of her dreams when she participates in the spring 2016 commencement. “For me, the most difficult aspect of college was financial – not social or academic,” she admitted.

Through the generosity of the Sea Island Gardening Group, the College Foundation established the Sea Island Gardening Group Coastal Ecology Scholarship Fund to provide scholarships for students at Coastal Georgia in the coastal ecology program. To qualify for the scholarship, the student must be full-time (15 credit hours or more) with a minimum 3.0 grade point average in all core science courses, sufficient credits to be classified as a junior with a Biological Sciences major in the coastal ecology track, and demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activities. Up to $4,000 per academic year will be awarded to the recipient.
To be chosen is not only an honor in itself, but it also provides financial support to enable the student to reach an even higher level of academic achievement.
Jessica Ahl ’15 (magna cum laude) and Daniel Nutt ’14 (December graduate; magna cum laude), biology majors in the coastal ecology track, were the recipients of the 2014-2015 Sea Island Gardening Group (SIGG) Scholarships.
Daniel now works at the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center at Ichauway in the research division of the plant ecology lab. “The SIGG scholarship helped me financially to complete a degree that is affording me the opportunity to do work that I love. I think it’s great to share the same passion for plants as all the members of the Sea Island Gardening Group, and I’m proud to be doing work that is supporting the conservation of natural plant communities in the southeastern U.S.”
Jessica served as a student assistant in the biology laboratories and for two years, from May through October, she worked in the research department of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island. She hopes to eventually attend graduate school, with Florida at the top of her list. “They have a respected wildlife conservation program and a tra-dition of encouraging scientific curiosity. The school is also near the extensive wetlands of the Everglades.” She won’t apply until she has a more secure finan-cial foundation to support her studies, noting the boost the SIGG scholarship for her undergraduate studies provided her. “Their support made such a difference.”

A native of Atlanta, Gail M. King graduated from The Lovett School and attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia, before transferring to Emory University where she received a B.A. in psychology. She earned her M.Ed. in special education from Emory University and set up resource rooms for special needs children in the Atlantic Public School System during the early 1970s. She was married to Kim King, the legendary quarterback for Georgia Tech under head coach Bobby Dodd and the beloved radio color analyst of Georgia Tech football games for 30 years until his death in 2004. Mrs. King is the owner of one of Atlanta’s foremost commercial real estate development firms and a diversified investment company, Kim King Associates, Inc.
Now a resident of the Golden Isles, Mrs. King is the mother of three grown

children and five grandchildren living in Atlanta. She is a former member of the Board of Trustees at Mary Baldwin College and the alumnae board of The Lovett School, a sustaining member of the Junior League of the Golden Isles and a member of the Colonial Dames. Her local community volunteer work included therapy dog visits to Hospice of the Golden Isles.
A continued interest in athletic programs, education and the wellbeing of this community
Because of her continued interest in athletic programs, education, and the wellbeing of this community, she established an endowment in 2014 to fund a golf scholarship for women student-athletes attending the College of Coastal Georgia and playing for the Mariners.

Sea Island residents Mary Louise and Dwayne Hoven’s passion to provide educational opportunities for first-generation college students inspired them to establish the Hoven Opportunity Scholars Program (HOSP) at the College of Coastal Georgia in fall 2014. Coming from rural communities in Alabama, Mr. and Mrs. Hoven knew firsthand what hard work, dedication and perseverance are all about. Mr. Hoven served as CEO of Revco, a Fortune 500 company located in Ohio, and was named Retailer of the Year in 1993 by Chain Drug Review, the 1994 Man of the Year by Long Island University, and in 1999, Outstanding Alumnus of the Auburn University College of Business, the highest alumnus honor granted by the college.
Their generosity, paired with a grant the College received from Coca-Cola Company, provides scholarship awards of $3,000 to qualified first-generation students with demonstrated financial need.
Donor Story The Hoven Opportunity Scholarship Program
First-generation college students represent approximately 45% of our student body. They often have little understanding or behavioral preparation for what college-level course work requires and they have little informed support at home. Some, but not all, first-generation students are from low-income families. They are considered “at risk” as freshmen because of their limited resources and experience as well as lack of role models or mentors. Timely progression and graduation is especially challenging because of family expectations and employment requirements. These students have the will to attend college and to improve their future prospects.
They are a vulnerable group of students seeking a better future than family circumstances would encourage or support. HOSP helps them attain the tools they need to succeed as college students.
