• Parkinggarages,withmassiveamountsofconcreteandrebar,willaffectRFsignalpropagation.Groundfloorsensorsrequireasecondgatewaytobelocatedonthegaragegroundfloorlevel.Upperfloorsensorscanbeservicedbyaseparategatewaythatismountedontheroofof455building.
• Inground/undersurfacemountingofparkingsensorsmaynotbeviableduetothepresenceofrebarintheconcretefloors.Parkingsensorsweremountedaboveground/topofsurfacebutadhesionofsensormountstofloorwasproblematic.Wefoundsensormountslooseanddisplaced.Severaltimeswehavetomovethesensorsbacktotheoriginallocation.
• Oneparkingsensor(L3HC01sensorstoppedworkinginAugust),L1HC02wasmissingsometimeinNovember,L1HC04wasnotshowingdatainNovember.Thesewereeitherreplacedandreintegrated,orstartedworkingagain.
• GaragegroundfloorgatewaystoppedworkingonDecember22.ThiswasduetotheGFCIcircuittrippingonthepoweroutlet.TheoutletwasresetinearlyJanuary.
• Alexavoiceintegrationgenerallyworks,butneedtokeepquestionsshorttoincreaseoddsofusersuccess(thelongertherequest,thehigherthelikelihoodofanerror).Alexahasahardtimeunderstandingacronyms.Ittriestospellit.Forexample,ittriestopronounceEVaseff.

• Analyticsdashboardandmetricsprovideddidnotgiveuswhatweneeded.Wehadtogointotherawdataandcreateourownsetofkeymetrics.ThismeanthatwehadtowaittillmonthendforaCSVfilebeforewecandoanyanalysis.
• Therealtimedashboardmetourbasicneeds,althoughthepresentationanduserinterfaceandengagementneedstoberethought.Beyondtheparking,therealtimedashboardalsoshowedtheAQ,weatherandsoilmoisture.Thedashboardasdesignedforthepilotisnotsomethingwewouldrecommendforoperationalusewithoutsomekindofre-thinking.
• Therewasanotedlatencyinwhattherealtimedashboardindicatedandwhatwastheactualparkingspacesituation.Forexample,thedashboardnotedtheparkingspaceasoccupiedbutinactualitythespacewasavailable.Thiswasattributedtothelocationofthegateway(whichwasontopofthe455building)whichcreatedsignificantlatencyincommunicatingwiththesensors.Thiswasthereasononeofthegatewayswasrelocatedtothegarage.
• Wedidnottestthemobileappinterfaceastherewasnotaneedto.Unlikesmartparkinginastreetlocationwherethespacesarespreadout,thereisonlyonelocationforthegarageparking.Locations/mappingandguidancearenotapplicableotherthantogetyoutothegarage.

• Publicdisabledparking–thereweresignificantinstanceswhereavehiclewasparkedformorethan12hours.Thisskewedtheresultontheoccupancyrates.Notsureifthiswasanon-disabledcountyvehicleparkinginthatspotandeffectivelyclosedoffthatspace.
• Severalofthesensorscameloosefromtheiroriginalmountinglocations.Sometimestheyendedupattheverytopoftheparkingspot,andsometimesintoanotherspot.Wemovedthembackwhenwesawthem,butnotsurehowthisaffectedtheactualparkingsensing.
• Threesensorsstoppedworkingorstoppedreportingdata.TwowerereplacedandreintegratedintothesysteminDecember.However,thismaybiassomeoftheresults,butpotentiallywehaveenoughdatatoobservegeneraltrends.
• Alltherawdatawasexamined,andfixedpriortoanalysis.Thisincludedthrowingoutbaddata,removingduplicates,andfixing“glitches”.Theseglitchesincludedatathatshowedaparkingsessionastwoseparatesessions(butwereinfact,thesamesession).
• Thecurrentmethodofanalyzingthedataisnotscalableforlargerdatasets.Itisacceptableworkingatapilotlevel,butatsomepoint,shouldbeautomatedorintegratedintoothertools.

Summaryofobservations-miscellaneous• Fybrwasingeneralagoodvendor.Veryprofessionalandknowledgeable.Theinstallation/
deploymentandsetupprocesswasveryseamless.Theywereveryresponsivetoquestions,requestsandissuesduringtheoperationalphaseofthepilot.
• The“asaService”modelwasn’talwaysseamlessoruneventful.TherewereacoupleofincidentsinwhichFybrinitiatedsomeactionsinthebackend,whichimpactedthepilotandsystematSMC.Twoexamples:
• Fybrupdatedtherealtimemapping/dashboardontheirside.ThiscausedtheSMCdashboardtonotwork(noparkingspaceinformation)
• Fybrinitiatedasoftwareupdatetothegatewaystochangechargingprofiles.Thistookdownthegaragegateway.Weareawaitingareplacementpowersupply.
• Whatthedatadoesn’ttellusisaboutunmetdemand.Forexample,ifall6publicEVspotsare
takenatacertainpointintime,wedon’tknowhowmanyotherEVsarelookingforaplacetoparkbutwereunableto.

Recommendations• Investigatemethodstobettersecurethesensorstotheparkingspace.Investigatefeasibilityof
mountingthesensorsintothefloor,or“bolting”therubbermountingskirtintothefloor.• Investigatetoseeifitispossibletogetendofchargedatafromthechargingstationsandcorrelate
itwiththeparkinginformation.ThiswaywecandeterminethecorrelationbetweenwhentheEVchargeiscompleteandwhenpeoplemovetheircars.
• WeekendsandweeknightsareunderutilizedforEVspots.Perhapsannouncetoresidentsand
visitorsintheneighborhoodthatthereareEVchargingstationsavailable.
• CoordinatewithRedwoodCityonparkingavailability.PerhapsintegrateSMCgarageparkinginformationwiththeparkinginformationprovidedbyRedwoodCity.ThiscanbedoneviaacommunicationfromthePublicAffairsteam.
• AscountyemployeeelectricvehiclespacesareoccupiedanhourlongerthanthepublicEVparking,communicatetoemployeestheneedtomovetheirvehiclesinatimelymannersoastoallowotherstopark.
