OVERVIEW
Crossroads Charter Academy had another successful school year of athletics. This report
highlights the athletic accomplishments for the 2018-2019 school year, giving just a taste of the
hard work of our students, coaches, and teams. Included is information about departmental
operations and development, academic and athletic accomplishments, as well as our student
participation rates this year. I am pleased to share the results of our year with you. Please feel
free to contact me with any questions or for additional information.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS
Communication:
● Fall, Winter, and Spring Meet the Team events at CCA
● Fall, Winter, and Spring Parent/Coaches’ meetings
● Fall, Winter, and Spring Pre-Season Coaches’ meetings
● Athletic website is up and running (www.crossroadsathletics.com)
● Athletic department Twitter account (@CCA_CougarDen) continues to gain followers
Sportsmanship:
● Athletic Director brought seven (7) student-athletes to the MHSAA Sportsmanship
Summit in November.
● Two basketball players were named to the BCAM Team First Award:
○ Cameron Carnes - Boys Basketball
○ Mackenzie Cole - Girls Basketball
■ The Team First Award is given to one member per varsity team who is
chosen by their BCAM Member Coach. This player should be the team
member that most exemplifies putting team before self, teamwork,
commitment, service, and sacrifice.
● The Girls Basketball programs were recognized as 2018-2019 Top 100 Sportsmanship
Award.
○ The 2018-2019 Top 100 Sportsmanship Award is sponsored by Pure Sweat.
After every regular season basketball game, that game’s officials are asked by the
MHSAA to provide feedback on the sportsmanship of both schools’ players,
coaches, administrators, and fans. At the end of the basketball season, schools
who have at least five (5) games with reported “sportsmanship scores” from
officials are ranked by the MHSAA, and the top 100 boys’ teams and top 100
girls’ teams (whose head varsity coach is a BCAM member) are awarded with a
banner to hang in their school’s gym.
Professional Activities:
● Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches are members of their respective coaches
associations.
● Athletic Director attends monthly West Michigan D League meetings for high school,
middle school and elementary activities.
● Athletic Director attends quarterly Northern Michigan Soccer League meetings for
varsity boys and girls programs.
● Athletic Director is an active member of the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic
Administrators Association (MIAAA).
● Athletic Director is an active member of the National Interscholastic Athletic
Administrators Association (NIAAA).

● Athletic Director attended the MHSAA AD In-Service and Update Meetings in October.
● Athletic Director attended the MIAAA Winter Conference in March.
● Athletic Director was a presider during a breakout session at MIAAA Winter Conference
in March.
● Athletic Director completed certification requirements and passed exam to become a
Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) through the NIAAA in March.
● Athletic Director served on the MHSAA Junior High/Middle School Committee and
Baseball Rule Committee.
● Boys soccer coach Josh Yurick served as chair for All-District Committee.
● Boys soccer coach Josh Yurick is a member of the United Soccer Coaches Association.
● Volleyball coach Kristin Yates completed MHSAA CAP 1 in April.
● Cross Country coach Cheryl Wright completed MHSAA CAP 1 in August
● Bowling coach David Hunt completed MHSAA CAP 1 in October.
● Athletic Director was a presenter at the MHSAA Sportsmanship Summit in November.
● Football coaching staff attended Glazier Clinic in February.
● Varsity track coach Travis McCuaig completed MHSAA CAP 1 in March.
● Volleyball coach Kristin Yates attended a volleyball coaching clinic at the University of
Michigan in April.

honors.
● The Girls’ Basketball team earned BCAM Class D Academic All-State honors with a
GPA of 3.593.
● The Boys Basketball team earned BCAM Class D Academic All-State honors with a
GPA of 3.067.
● The Girls Soccer team earned MIHSSCA Class D Academic All-State honors with a
GPA of 3.32.
● 64 student-athletes received WMD Academic All-Conference awards.

High School Celebrations, Significant Accomplishments, and Highlights
● CCA hosted the MHSAA Class D Boys’ Soccer District in the Fall.
● CCA hosted the MHSAA Class D Girls’ Basketball District in the Winter.
● CCA hosted the MHSAA Class D Softball District in the Spring.
● Boys soccer team won their home “Cougar Invitational” on Saturday, September 29.
● Varsity volleyball team hosted three (3) home invites: CCA Invite, WMD Conference
tournament, and Cougar Invite.
● Football won “Top Cat” rivalry trophy over Baldwin on Friday, October 5.
● Girls cross country team qualified two runners for the MHSAA State Finals by placing in
the top 15 at Regionals.

School records broken this school year:
● Boys basketball team tied the regular season record with 19 wins with the 2011 varsity
team.
● Boys basketball team won their first MHSAA Boys Basketball Regional Championship
(03/07/2019 vs. Fulton).
● Boys basketball team set single season win record with 23 wins (23-2).
● Boys basketball team played in their first MHSAA Boys Basketball Quarterfinal vs.
Frankfort at Cadillac High School (03/12/2019).
● Senior Keegan McKinnon set the single season record by competing on six (6) varsity
team during the 2018-2019 school year.
● Girls track athlete Bailey Dever set a new Shot Put record with 31’6.5”
● Boys track athlete Joe Wendlowsky set a new Pole Vault record with 10’6”
Alumnis Update:
● Miranda Carlson (Grace Christian University) was selected 2019 NCCAA DII Woman’s
3rd Team All-American.
● Miranda Carlson (Grace Christian University) was selected 2019 NCCAA DII Mideast
Regional 1st Team.
