A  recent  Cambridge  Science  graduate  seeking  to  enter  the  FMCG  /  food  retail  industry  in  a  commercial  general  management  and  marketing  role.  Hardworking,  analytical  and  service-‐oriented.  Strong  communication  skills  through  teaching  in  China  and  a  sound  understanding  of  business  through  hospitality  work.  A  rigorous  analytical  approach  used  to  solve  problems  enhanced  by  my  challenging  scientific  studies.  Keen  to  apply  all  this  towards  solving  real-‐world  business  problems,  with  the  longer-‐term  aim  of  progressing  to  a  managerial  role  in  Marketing,  Commercial  or  Procurement.

Education    2013-‐16  –  Christ’s  College  Cambridge  -‐ 2:1  -‐  biological  natural  sciences,  specialising  in  developmental  biology    -‐ Dissertation  -‐  Following  critical  analysis  of  the  literature  and  having  designed  a  series  of

experiments  with  my  supervisor,  I  produced  a  7000  word  report  detailing  the  presence  of  a  particular  signaling  system  in  the  nematode  worm  for  the  first  time.

-‐ Presentation  –  presented  my  results  to  academics  and  peers.  Used  simple  representations  to  explain  complex  mathematical  and  often  ‘messy’  data.  Answered  questions.

-‐ Supervisions  –  debated  studies  and  concepts  with  academics.  Defended  views  when  required    -‐ Extra-‐curricular  -‐  Successfully  balanced  a  full  7-‐day-‐week  academic  timetable  with  multiple

voluntary  commitments  (e.g.  secretary  of  the  rugby  club  –  responsible  for  club  finances).    2005-‐12  –  RGS  Guildford  -‐ A2  -‐  Biology,  Chemistry  and  Maths,  all  A*  (98%  UMS).  Won  the  Robins  prize  for  top  performance  in

Biology  for  my  school.  -‐ AS  -‐  Biology,  Chemistry,  Maths,  Physics,  all  A  (99%  UMS)  -‐ GCSE  -‐  9,  all  A*

Experience    Teacher,  Cambridge  Youth  Summer  Camp,  China  –  2  consecutive  summers:  Shanghai  (June  16’  –  September  16’)  and  (Guangzhou  -‐  July  15’  –  September  15’)  -‐ Event  Creation  +  Execution  –  ran  a  ‘mini-‐Olympics’  event  involving  the  entire  camp.  Planned

event,  briefed  and  assigned  roles  to  teachers,  coordinated  the  event  on  the  night.  -‐ Lesson  Planning  –  created  my  own  series  of  lessons  on  multiple  subjects,  including  some  I  had

little  experience  of  (e.g.  drama).  Often  adapted  these  on  the  spot  during  lessons.  -‐ Teaching/Coaching  –  required  clear  communication  since  the  students  spoke  limited  English.  My

class  won  the  ‘college  cup’  following  their  good  performances  during  evening  e.g.  dancing.  -‐ Budgeting/Procurement  –  talked  to  teachers  to  compile  list  of  key  equipment,  shopped  for  these

at  a  local  supermarket.  Worked  to  a  budget,  prioritised  main  items  to  add  most  value  to  camp      Residential  Advisor,  Summerfuel  -‐  Lady  Margaret  Hall  College,  Oxford  (Jul’14-‐Aug’14)  -‐ Office  work  -‐  included  understanding  and  allaying  parents’  concerns  over  the  phone.  -‐ Relationship-‐building  –  got  to  know  and  was  responsible  for  welfare  of  10  international  teens.    Hospitality  Staff  Member,  Creative  Events,  Brooklands  Museum  -‐  Weybridge  (Oct’12–  Dec’16)  -‐ Multiple  customer-‐facing  roles,  including  waitering,  till  work  and  running  large  events.  -‐ Leadership  -‐  often  managed  a  team  of  less  experienced  workers,  providing  support  and

encouraging  staff  during  busy  periods.  Also  involved  being  adaptable  and  responsible  for  decision-‐making  under  pressure.  For  example,  during  an  unexpectedly  busy  New  Year’s  Day  event  where  over  4000  people  turned  up,  there  were  power  cuts  and  a  blocked  water  system  as  a  result  of

overloading.  I  had  to  alter  the  food  and  water  supply  chains  for  the  outdoor  barbeque  station,  and  recruited  staff  from  other  less  busy  positions.  I  managed  to  keep  this  running  throughout  the  day,  despite  constant  customer  flow.

-‐ Teamwork  –  e.g.  worked  as  part  of  a  team  of  waiters  responsible  efficient  food  and  wine  service.  Required  coordinating  with  bar  staff  and  chefs  on  timing,  dietary  requirements  etc.

-‐ Commercial  profitability  –following  a  higher  managerial  decision  to  place  a  buffet  in  a  more  isolated  position  during  a  large  event,  I  improved  advertising  for  it  by  increasing  outdoor  signage.  This  led  to  increased  customer  awareness,  resulting  in  improved  turnover  and  profit.

-‐ Customer  service  –  prioritised  the  wellbeing  of  guests  at  all  times.  Involved  using  initiative  to  deal  with  individuals’  concerns

Consequently  I  managed  to  get  by  with  a  very  low  daily  spend  (e.g.  £13  per  day  in  Malaysia).    Scientific  Research  Project,  King’s  College  -‐  London  (Jul’11  –  Aug’11)  -‐ Volunteered  to  spend  my  summer  working  with  a  laboratory  team  on  a  Developmental

Neurobiology  project  -‐ Emailed  scientists  -‐  persuading  them  to  take  me  on.  -‐ Complex  theory  –  required  using  my  spare  time  to  understand  new  topics  that  were  well  above

my  level  at  the  time  -‐ Ran  experiments  –  required  time  management,  since  they  were  often  run  concurrently.  -‐ Presentation  –  of  results  to  my  school  class,  explaining  complex  theory  in  simple  terms.  Report

articulated  complex  concepts  by  breaking  them  down  into  logical  steps.    Sports  Teacher,  Cambodia  (July’10  –  Aug’10)  -‐ Communication  –  led  lessons  and  explained  games  clearly  without  the  use  of  language    -‐ Adapted  lessons  –  on  the  spot  depending  on:  how  many  children  turned  up,  the  quality  of  the

location  and  the  equipment  available  (e.g.  using  rice  paddies  for  football  pitches).    Volunteer,  Cancer  Research  UK  -‐  Walton-‐on-‐Thames  (Aug’09)  -‐ Till/shop  floor  work  –involved  negotiating  prices  and  persuading  customers  to  buy  items  Pricing

and  merchandising  –  changed  some  of  the  goods  prices  based  on  personal  knowledge  and  current  online  prices.  Also  created  displays  to  attract  window  shoppers.
