In August 2012, the five Swiss narrow-gauge railways MOB, MVR, TPC, TPF and NStCM ordered tailored HGem 2/2 and Gem
2/2 dual-power diesel rack-and-pinion/adhesion locomotives from Stadler. The locomotives are assigned to the infrastructure
divisions to be used for construction work, snow clearing and intervention trips. Their dual modality gives the trains real potential.
In order to move heavy work trains, the locomotives can be operated in multiple unit train control and travel to the working prem-
ises using environmentally friendly electric power. For manoeuvres on-site if the overhead contact line is switched off or in case
of malfunctions, there is a powerful, state-of-the-art diesel engine. The locomotive can be remotely controlled for special jobs.

Technical features
Technology
– Three-phase current asynchronous drive technology with ABB
power converter – variably adjustable with excellent, environ-
mentally friendly slow travel properties
– Drive motors and generator from TSA
– Eight-cylinder diesel engine from Mercedes, Euro IIIB and
particulate filter
– Recuperation of braking energy possible in electric mode,
brake resistors available for running in diesel mode and in the
absence of an overhead contact line
– As many parts as possible are shared with the various pas-
senger multiple units of the same railway company (identical
axle drives, traction electronics, communication and control
modules, driver’s cab, operating elements, compressed air
systems, etc.)
– Comprehensive lighting options in addition to front lighting:
searchlight, warning lights, coupling lighting, vehicle side lights
– On-board electricity supply system: 400 V AC
Personnel
– Space for up to 10 people in the locomotive (work trains)
– Ergonomically designed driver’s cabs
– Excellent insulation of the diesel engine to minimise noise
Reliability / Availability / Maintainability / Safety
– The rack-and-pinion locomotives comply with the Swiss
AB-EBV (IP-RailO) rack-and-pinion rail regulations
