History of Hungary

2000 BC Finno-Ugarian tribes around the Ural mountains. Migration towards west.895-6 AD Settlement of the Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin, led by Prince Árpád.1001 Coronation of Saint Stephen, the first king, gets crown from the Pope, founds the state and turns it into Christianity.1241-1242 A mongol invasion devastates Hungary. 1301- Kings from different dinasties.

The settlement

1914-18 World War I., followed by revolutions. 1920 Peace treaty of Trianon, Hungary lost 2/3 of its territories. Revitalisation of the country.1941-45 Dragged into the World War.1945-48 A short transitional democratic period. 1948- Forced communism. 1956 “Budapest Autumn” - Revolution in Hungary. 1989-90 Transition to Republic, first free elections. 2004 Join the European Union.

1526 Disastrous defeat by the Ottomans at Mohács. 1699 End of the Ottoman reign, Habsburg absolutism. 1825- “The age of the reforms” great economical, cultural and political developement. 1848-49 Revolution and independence war against the Habsburg reign, crushed by the Tsar and the Habsburg Emperor.1867 Compromise: Austria-Hungary, a dualistic country founded.
