I’m waiting for Larry Ruvo inside Southern Nevada’s most exclusive speakeasy, the Copa Lounge. Named after the legendary Sands-era Rat Pack hangout, it’s discretely tucked atop the second floor executive
offices of Southern Wine & Spirits of Nevada. The distribution giant occupies a tasteful mission-style building in the southwest valley, with artwork lining the halls and a fountain in the courtyard. The 340,000-square-foot complex is the state’s nerve center for liquid libations, providing alcohol to mega-resorts and nightclubs, restaurants and convenience stores. It’s a staggering operation, with 450 local employees and 50 trucks that move up to 50,000 cases of liquor a night. The private lounge reflects refinement, sophistication and affluence. Cheery-wood lined walls showcase fine art lithographs, while overstuffed chairs, couches and ottomans form a casual salon. A brown marble bar is stocked with every spirit known to mankind, complete with its own private on-call bartender. The lounge has a balcony overlooking the sun-warmed roofs dotting an otherwise inconspicuous valley neighborhood. The Copa dazzles by design, seducing its visitors and serving as a nonpareildeal-closer.
