Progress Association President’s Report... What a fantastic holiday period we had here in Hardwicke Bay! As usual, the township was full to
the brim of locals, shackies and holiday makers – great times!
And those that were around for the heatwave saw us record our highest temperature ever at
nearby Minlaton Airport! I recorded 48.5 C under my pergola that day. Anyway, it was great
weather for our bottle and can fundraising – plenty of empties around after that hot spell!
We are trying to add more content to the newsletter to ensure it remains informative and
interesting. We have commenced a local history article, kindly written up by Christina and Graham
Ball, who are both long term residents of the area and local amateur historians. Christina has
actually published a few books about local history. So we hope you enjoy reading these each
month.
There was an excellent turn out at the hall for the Australia Day free sausage sizzle. Over 70 people
attended to help celebrate the event. We will work to try and attract even more people next year.
Our next main event is the Fishing Competition over the Easter long weekend. This will be the
fourth year running and will once again have cash prizes for the fishing competition and a huge
raffle. Many great prizes have already been sourced. It should be another fantastic event for
Hardwicke Bay – let’s hope the weather is good.
Thanks again to all the hard working committee members over this busy period. Without their
dedication – our events just wouldn’t get off the ground.

Family Fun Day 2019
This year’s Family Fun Day was again attended by over
50 children and their families despite fairly windy
conditions. The Annual Sandcastle Competition was a
huge success with some amazing creations! Our new
Progress Association President, Ashley, couldn’t
choose just one winner so awarded prizes to every
group!
Kids again enjoyed a free sausage sizzle and a drink for
lunch.
Thanks to everyone who came along on the day and to
all the volunteers who work so hard to allow these
events to happen in our little community!

February Recipe—Lemon Tart
30 mins preparation | 1 hour 5 mins cooking | Serves 8 Ingredients:
1. Place flour, a pinch of salt and butter in a food processor. Pulse until mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add sugar, egg yolk and vanilla and process until mixture comes together, adding 1-2 tablespoons chilled water, if necessary. 2. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly to form a ball. Wrap in plastic wrap. Chill for 20 minutes. 3. Preheat oven to 190°C (170°C fan-forced). Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to fit a 23cm flan pan. Using a rolling pin, transfer to pan. Press pastry firmly into pan without stretching pastry. Trim excess and lightly prick base with a fork. 4. Line with greaseproof paper and half fill with dried beans or rice. Blind bake for 20 minutes. Remove paper and beans and bake for another 5 minutes. Cool in pan. 5. Reduce oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). To prepare filling, whisk together eggs, sugar, lemon rind, juice and cream. Pour into tart shell and bake for 40 minutes. Dust with icing sugar and serve with cream.
Rich Shortcrust Pastry 1 1/2 cup (225g) plain flour 125 gram unsalted butter 1 1/2 cup (55g) caster sugar 1 egg yolk 2 drops vanilla extract
Lemon Tart 4 eggs 1/2 cup caster sugar grated rind and juice of 2 large lemons 1/2 cup (125ml) cream icing sugar, to dust thick cream, to serve

Thanks to the many locals and visitors who attended the Community Hall to celebrate Australia Day with a free sausage sizzle and ice-blocks for the kids. The bar was open for the first time this year and everyone enjoyed themselves in their best Aussie outfits! Congratulations to Sue Crook who won the Meat Tray Raffle! The Proposed Township of Hardwicke Bay—1877
In 1877, Graeme’s, great-great grandfather, James Murdock, subdivided a small section of his farm and consequently
advertised for sale the township, which he named “Hardwicke Bay”. The blocks were to be sold by auction on
Tuesday, 13th November 1877 by Messrs. Pizey and Reed, at White’s Rooms, King William St, Adelaide. The sale was
not a success, only four allotments were sold to Mr George Turner for £125.
Although James Murdock’s vision of “marine residences” was well ahead of his time, no further allotments sold and
Turner’s four blocks were never developed. Murdock repurchased the four blocks in 1893 for £5.
To quote the South Australian Register, 16th
November 1889, describing a journey to
southern Yorke Peninsula “the travelers
admired the beauties of Hardwicke Bay, on the
eastern (sic) side of the Peninsula, which would
be a most delightful seaside resort for the jaded
citizens of Adelaide if it were more accessible”.
In the ensuing years the locality had become
known as Point Turton, the original designation
of Hardwicke Bay for the township long since
forgotten. Point Turton was declared a town in
October 1984.
Our town of Hardwicke Bay was officially
declared as such four years later in 1988. The
little collection of leasehold fishing shacks
erected since the 1950’s was named Hardwicke
Bay after the bay itself and by the 1980’s our
town had also grown with the consequent
subdivision of the adjoining farm land.
Amazingly one of the original posters for the
1877 sale of James Murdock’s “Hardwicke Bay”
has survived and is held by the State Library of
South Australia.

REEF ENCOUNTERS
FISHING CHARTER EXPEDITION
On Monday, 21st January “Team O’Brien” (Roger, Stuart, Steph and I) set off to Pondalowie Bay for a day of deep sea fishing and fun. The charter left the bay at 7:30am and on our way out to the snapper spot we tried trawling for tuna, but to no avail. Upon anchoring we instantly started to pull in a mixture of nannygai, sweetlip, snapper, trevally, and other, it was a mixed bag. A fishing crew of 11, plus skipper Mark and deckhand Clint were kept very busy baiting, casting, reeling and tagging the fish. Each
group had their own colour tags so we knew whose fish were whose at the end of the day. As the fish went off the bite we would move to another spot and they would start again, this happened through the day with about 5 moves.
We were very lucky with the weather, a perfect day for it, although a couple of lads (who may have had a drink or 2 the night before) were not well. Stuart, Steph and I took quell 45 minutes before getting on the charter, and 4 hours later, even though we were ok, and we felt fine the entire day. Stuart landed the catch of the day with a large school shark which he was pretty pumped about. The charter was back in the bay at 4:30pm with cleaned fish and a lot of happy customers. It was such a fun and memorable day and we would highly recommend Reef Encounters Fishing Charter to anyone who loves fishing. You get a great day of fishing and you get to keep the catch, it’s a win / win. Any ladies thinking of doing the charter, yes go for it (there is a toilet onboard). Mark and Clint were so helpful and welcoming, we did not stop smiling all day.

Garth and Joan Matthews Are Leaving Us Garth and Joan live in Norwood and bought a shack on 1 Foreshore
Road in Hardwicke Bay in 1971, in partnership with another person.
The total cost was $4,800 so half share was $2,400. This was on
Crown land so a cost of $50 per year was payable.
They sold the shack in 1990 and moved up the street a little to their
current residence. This was also on Crown land and in 1990 Garth
and Joan bought the freehold title for $30,000. In the 70’s Warooka
was the focal town and was used as the main town to shop at or
have a drink at the pub.
Garth and Joan love fishing and they had many contests with England vs Australia (Garth being English) but we believe
that Australia (Joan) was the most frequent winner. Garth did protest (well he is a Pom) as he had to take the fish
off Joan’s line as she would not do it. Their original boat was a 18ft Bondwood boat with a Blaxland inboard with a
cruising speed of 7 knots.
There where 7 pro fishermen in Hardwicke in the 70’s all using handlines. Boats would be launched at Turton then
moored at Hardwicke Bay. However, there was a guy Don that would launch a boat for $2 and retrieve it for another
$2.
Garth joined the Progress Association in the 70’s to work on the “saving our shacks” project. Garth recalls that in the
70’s every Easter and Christmas the shop owner at Warooka would come to Hardwicke daily with newspapers and
basic needs. Garth and Joan say that the sale of their shack and leaving Hardwicke Bay is a nostalgic moment and sad
but they wanted to work out their plans for the future while still being capable.
Joan did mention that Garth said they would leave Hardwicke Bay when he turned 70. Garth will celebrate his 83rd
Birthday this year so the target date was just missed. Both Joan and Garth say how they loved the scenery, the people
and the lifestyle at Hardwicke Bay and one they will sadly miss. They also will miss the Monthly Dinners at the Hall.
We all wish Garth and Joan all the very best of health and happiness for the future. You will be sadly missed. Please
come back to visit us.
