Lehigh Carbon Community College welcomed Professor Mary Waters, sociologist from Harvard University, on March 17, in the Community Services Center, LCCC Main Campus in Schnecksville. Waters discussed “Immigrant Dreams and American Realities: Race, Legal Status and the Integration of Immigrants and their Children.” Her in-depth presentation centered around the cycle of immigrants to America which began with the Irish influx in the 1800’s. The presentation, which was attended by students and faculty, was one of two given this year by Professor Waters as part of the Eastern Sociological Society’s Robin Williams, Jr. Lectures. Waters has testified twice before congress on how the census should measure racial and ethnic identity. She served on the Advisory Board to the U.S. Census as a representative of the Population Association of America from 1999-2005, she has consulted to the census and she was a Census Scholar at the Bureau in the summer of 2011. She has served as a member of the study section of the National Institute of Child Health and Development, and has served as a member of the Committee on the Impact of International Migration of the National Academy of Science. Harvard Professor Discusses Immigration and Race Lehigh Carbon Community College Named One of
the Top Workplaces in the Lehigh Valley Lehigh Carbon Community College was recognized by The Morning Call as one of the Top Workplaces in the Lehigh Valley. At the award reception, LCCC was named third in the large employer category (500+ employees). President Dr. Ann D. Bieber was honored with the Leadership Award, also in the large employer category. “I want to thank all of you for the work you do to make LCCC a Top Workplace,” stated Dr. Bieber in an open letter to the college community. The college was one of 30 Lehigh Valley employers at this special recognition event and was featured in a supplement article in The Morning Call in early March. The article, LCCC gives staff, students a chance to excel, showcased several employees, their backgrounds and experiences, and their positions at the college. The article highlighted how the college embodies its slogan to students, Start here-Go anywhere through the efforts of the employees. Those efforts are what the Top Workplaces award recognizes; that LCCC is a community of supportive colleagues, hard-working staff and devoted faculty. The evaluation for the Top Workplaces program is based upon feedback from a survey that employees completed in September. “This award is evidence that we are on the right track to develop and strengthen leaders throughout the college, that we have created the right environment and empowered people to make decisions,” added Dr. Bieber. The President’s open letter to
the college community continued with thanks and praise for all the hard work, commitment and dedication employees put forth. “LCCC is a strong and vibrant institution. Your actions and interactions with each other make LCCC outstanding. This recognition comes as we prepare to celebrate our 50th anniversary. How proud our founders would be to see the college as it is now and the reputation it has earned,” noted Dr. Bieber.

2015 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar
Richard Warner, Professor of Business and Director of the Business Enterprise Center (BEC) at LCCC, has been named a recipient of the annual National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award for 2015. Warner has been with the college for more than 30 years, and in that time has developed the Human Resource Management degree program as well as the Entrepreneurial and Small Business Certificate program. He has extensive experience in leadership,
instruction and business creation and has been instrumental in the development of the Business Enterprise Center as project director. NISOD’s Excellence Awards recognize men and women each year who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment and contribution to their students and colleagues. In 1989, in connection with a University of Texas at Austin national study of teaching excellence, NISOD hosted its first ceremony honoring NISOD Excellence Award recipients. “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn. At LCCC the BEC is poised and ready to get students, alumni, and the community involved, to begin an exciting life as an entrepreneur and a small business owner. As founder of the Entrepreneur and Small Business program and the Business Enterprise Center I believe Peter Drucker when he said: ‘The best way to predict the future is to create it,’” quotes Professor Warner. “Mr. Warner has a keen eye for entrepreneurship and has helped lead the effort here at LCCC,” says Dr. Ann Bieber, LCCC president. “He knows how to get a broad range of students interested in the entrepreneurial process.” Created in 1978, NISOD is a membership organization committed to promoting and celebrating excellence in teaching, learning and leadership at community and technical colleges. NISOD supports its member colleges by providing professional development resources and learning experiences, including practitioner publications, webinars, the annual International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence, the NISOD Excellence Awards, and more. For more information about NISOD, visit www.nisod.org.
