2015 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar

Richard Warner, Professor of Business and Director of the Business Enterprise Center (BEC) at LCCC, has been named a recipient of the annual National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award for 2015. Warner has been with the college for more than 30 years, and in that time has developed the Human Resource Management degree program as well as the Entrepreneurial and Small Business Certificate program. He has extensive experience in leadership,

instruction and business creation and has been instrumental in the development of the Business Enterprise Center as project director. NISOD’s Excellence Awards recognize men and women each year who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment and contribution to their students and colleagues. In 1989, in connection with a University of Texas at Austin national study of teaching excellence, NISOD hosted its first ceremony honoring NISOD Excellence Award recipients. “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn. At LCCC the BEC is poised and ready to get students, alumni, and the community involved, to begin an exciting life as an entrepreneur and a small business owner. As founder of the Entrepreneur and Small Business program and the Business Enterprise Center I believe Peter Drucker when he said: ‘The best way to predict the future is to create it,’” quotes Professor Warner. “Mr. Warner has a keen eye for entrepreneurship and has helped lead the effort here at LCCC,” says Dr. Ann Bieber, LCCC president. “He knows how to get a broad range of students interested in the entrepreneurial process.” Created in 1978, NISOD is a membership organization committed to promoting and celebrating excellence in teaching, learning and leadership at community and technical colleges. NISOD supports its member colleges by providing professional development resources and learning experiences, including practitioner publications, webinars, the annual International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence, the NISOD Excellence Awards, and more. For more information about NISOD, visit www.nisod.org.

LCCC student, Michael Colarusso of Allentown, has been named a 2015 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver and 50 Bronze Scholars, and providing nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each Gold Scholar receives a $1,500 scholarship and a special medallion. Colarusso, a 2006 graduate of Whitehall-Coplay High School, is a psychology major graduating in May from LCCC. His plans are to transfer to a four-year institution in the fall to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology, hoping to earn his master’s degree and conduct research. A past president of LCCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Colarusso recently presented a research project he conducted with an LCCC faculty member at the Eastern Psychological Association 2015 Conference in Philadelphia, Pa. Student scholars also receive recognition locally during ceremonies held on campus and internationally for those who are able to attend Phi Theta Kappa’s Annual Convention. Phi Theta Kappa will recognize the 2015 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Scholars at this year’s Annual Convention, April 16-18, in San Antonio, Texas. Community college presidents or their designated nominators may submit no more than two nominations per campus for this award. An independent panel of judges considers outstanding academic rigor, grade point average, academic and leadership awards, and engagement in college and community service in the selection process.
