Inle Lake, the second largest lake in Myanmar, is a freshwater lake located in the Shan Hills. Shwe Yan Pyay Monastery is a 19th century monastery built entirely of teak, painted red, heaving beside a white pagoda
The Shwe Yan Pyay Monastery is a short walk to the north of town and is well known by photographers because of its unique architecture with the oval windows
and for the white stucco temple next to it with its red interior and thousands of niches, each holding a small Buddha
All around the central sanctuary is a walkway with niches. In every niche is a Buddha (and a sign indicating the Buddha’s donor).
Shwe Yan Pyay Monastery is a 19th century monastery built entirely of teak, painted red, that today remains in full operation as school and home for young novice monks and their teachers.
Nyaung Shwe is a town a few kilometers north of Inle Lake in the Shan State of Myanmar. Nyaung Shwe is the tourist hub for visiting Inle Lake. It consists of one main thoroughfare with numerous side streets and a few parallel roads. The town serves as a marina for the numerous long boats carrying tourists into the lake. The lake itself is located a few kilometers south through a river channel.
