PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
6
Dear Friends:
On behalf of the Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) officers, board members and staff, welcome to the 2020 KLC Conference & Expo. In a year of many “firsts,” thank you for being part of our first virtual annual conference.
This year’s conference has something for everyone and offers a “new view” on learning and networking. As many of you know firsthand, KLC has hosted more than 50 virtual learning sessions in recent months to bring us updates on COVID-19 as well as topics of ongoing importance. With the conference, the KLC training team has taken virtual learning to the next level. It includes important sessions, resources and networking, and they’ve also managed to keep it exciting with a fresh take on the welcome reception and our annual awards.
When KLC decided on the theme of “2020: Re-vision – A New View,” none of us had any idea how different things would look in our cities. Like most of you, my city of Jeffersontown has taken steps to address the seriousness of the pandemic, manage the day-to-day challenges, and keep moving forward.
One of the great lessons I’ve learned as a local official is that we truly are better together. While we’ve been isolated in some ways this year, our cities have never been more unified in our mission to lift our Kentucky communities and constituents. People can depend on their cities and city leaders.
Many of you have participated in the KLC legislative process this year. Cities made tremendous strides with the separation of the County Employees Retirement System (CERS) funds among many other successes. We’ve also seen an outstanding year for our KLC insurance, finance and community development programs. In December, J.D. Chaney stepped into the role of executive director/CEO and has led the KLC staff team during one of the most challenging times in recent history.
As for me, it’s been my great honor and pleasure to serve as your KLC president. I have learned and gained so much by meeting many of you and visiting your cities. I have said before that individually, we can plant one tree, but together we can plant a forest. As we move beyond today’s challenges, let’s plant that forest so future generations can enjoy the shade – and enjoy the new view.
Sincerely,
Bill DierufPresident, Kentucky League of CitiesMayor of Jeffersontown

Dear KLC Members:
Thank you for being part of our first virtual KLC Conference & Expo. Our world is a much different place than it was during last year’s conference. Life has changed for all of us, and 2020 has been a time of recasting our visions – for our cities, families and
futures. And with change comes opportunity.
Having had the chance to visit many communities over the summer, I know your cities have adapted, in some cases overnight, in order to accommodate your constituents and stay on top of issues. Policing concerns, discourse, continuing budget challenges and the many ramifications of COVID have made this year one of new leadership experiences.
At the Kentucky League of Cities, we are making it a part of our long-standing mission to provide resources throughout the pandemic. We’ve worked diligently to keep you abreast of changes in laws, regulations, employment issues and safety. Beyond that, we’ve maintained our focus on legislative advocacy, insurance and loss control, financial tools and all of our comprehensive and unrivaled member services and programs. This year’s conference, with the theme of 2020: Re-Vision – A New View, speaks to that effort.
Some things will be what you expect: an excellent roster of sessions on critical topics, a top-notch keynote speaker, interactive breakout sessions, chances to network and an expo hall with valuable resources. What’s different, of course, is that it’s all virtual in order to keep us safe.
We’ve discovered that the virtual landscape has engaged many new KLC members in our training program. After all, it’s affordable, involves no travel and can be done from the safety of your home, office or phone.
We never know what we can do until we are challenged. This year our conference will challenge all of us to engage in new ways. It will challenge our thinking, too, for the decade ahead and the future of our commonwealth. Welcome to the KLC Conference & Expo. Enjoy it and let our KLC team know how we can assist you during the conference and throughout the year.
Sincerely,
J.D. ChaneyExecutive Director/CEOKentucky League of Cities

“A vision is enlivening, it’s spirit-giving. It’s the guiding force behind all great human endeavors. Vision is about shared energy, a sense of awe, a sense of possibility.”
– Benjamin Zander
Ultimately, leadership is about moving toward a desired destination. If you and your people don’t know where you’re going, however, your leadership doesn’t matter. So how do you move your TEAM from where you are to where you want to be? It all starts with vision...a picture of the future that produces passion in your people. But this picture must be more than a tagline. During this session, you will closely examine yourself, your teams, your desired destinations, and the path to take you there. Whether for yourself, your children, or your organizations, Visioneering is an ideal tool to help you arrive… on purpose.
