This year has been an eventful one for Highgate Wood Music Department including going abroad to Austria on our bi‐annual Tour, MADfest and taking part in our Musical, ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. The Winter Concert is our chance to show parents some of the fantastic work that goes on in the department on a day to day basis. It is brilliant to work in a department where students are constantly motivated and willing to put the work in to improve and to achieve their best. We welcome on board Andy Greene, our new technician who has helped us to organise everything. I also wish to thank the staff for their efforts towards making this concert such a success. Mr Ekstrom, Kate Dornan, Anna Ryan, Paul Guenault and Ruth Dodds who all work tirelessly to help the pupils improve and perform to their full potential. I also wish to thank our team of Peri Teachers, particularly Nick Would, Nick Wilkinson, Paolo Vanoncini and Sarah Williams for their extra‐curricular support throughout the Year. Of course, none of this would be possible without the help and organisation of the amazing Tina Hassan.

Welcome to the last Insight of 2011!
It has been yet another busy term and much has happened since I last wrote to you in October. Some of these things are included in this message – most things are covered in the remainder of this edition of Insight.
Outcome of Ofsted Visit Ofsted say that we are a GOOD school As you know, Ofsted visited the school on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th November earlier this term. We were one of the last schools to be inspected under the current framework before it all changes from January.
Ofsted grade schools according to strict criteria and there are four overall judgements regarding a school’s overall effectiveness. These are…
I am pleased to report to you that Highgate Wood School is regarded by Ofsted as a GOOD school. This is a reward for the hard work that we have embarked on as a school to improve since the previous inspection in February 2009 when we were judged to be satisfactory. We are confident (as are Ofsted) that we are moving in the right direction with good capacity to further improve and become the outstanding school that we want to be and believe that we will be when Ofsted next come calling.
The most important aspect of the inspection outcome is the fact that it confirms what we always believed – Highgate Wood provides a good education and good experiences for our students. This is ultimately the most important thing. Particularly pleasing is the fact that the extent to which our students feel safe in school was regarded by Ofsted to be outstanding!

It is very pleasing to have moved away from being regarded as satisfactory, but we are not content with being good. We want to be even better! With the consistent and wholehearted support of everyone; staff, students, parents, governors and everyone else in the community that has a stake in HWS, we know that we can move forward as one and achieve even more for our young people.

Post 16 Open Evening – the natural route from Year 11 into the 6th Form We held our Post 16 Open Evening on Thursday 8th December for all current year 11 students (and some year 10s) and their parents to come and view the school. I was really pleased with the number of people that attended each event – particularly the mix between students who currently attend HWS and students from across Haringey. There weren’t enough seats in the main hall to accommodate all those who attended! This is a testament to our growing reputation locally and as I reported previously to you, I am proud that more and more we are being considered by our community as the local school of choice. I was also pleased with the very positive feedback that we received.

I attended the Sixth Form Open Evening with my daughter last night and just wanted to let you know how impressed I was. The teaching at HWS is inspiring and the pastoral care is fantastic. One of the most important things to emerge out of the evening is the clarity that our Year 11s now have about the expectations of them in terms of securing a place in the 6th Form. For every student that wishes to secure their place they must...
1. Work really hard between now and the summer exams to secure the very challenging grades necessary to gain access to our Post 16 courses – for many students there is now a realisation of just what it will take
2. Ensure that they continue to make a positive contribution to HWS as a positive reference from their tutor or their head of learning is also a pre‐requisite for entry
This year, for the first time, I will personally be taking part in interviewing students for a place in the 6th Form. We look forward to seeing those who attended the evening (and those who didn’t) in September 2012.

Attendance after Christmas
I am consistently reminded by real life examples of the direct link between attendance and continued good progress at school. It has been demonstrated that students whose attendance dips below 95% are far less likely to achieve their potential than those who attend more regularly.
With this in mind, I would like to pre‐warn parents/carers that I intend to be far more strict in terms of requests for holidays during term time. Where a child does not have excellent attendance, any request will almost certainly be declined. I understand how difficult it can be for families to organise expensive breaks during the school holidays, but the impact that not being in school has can create gaps in learning that are hard to fill. Of course, I will continue to consider extenuating circumstances, but these will be the exception rather than the rule.
I ask that parents/carers, particularly in Key Stage 4 and Post 16 where there are crucial assessments and elements of coursework being completed all the time, do not make plans for taking holidays when their children are supposed to be at school.

Good Luck to Staff who are leaving...
We will be losing two members of the PE department at the end of this term. Scott Keough and Kristee Arkle will be leaving us to pursue careers abroad. We are greatly indebted to both of them for the excellent contribution that they have both made to the school. The students and staff will miss them and their influence significantly.
In the New Year we will also be saying goodbye to Madeleine Scola, our senior science technician who is retiring in January. She too will be greatly missed.
We wish them all the very best for the future!

A message from the Chair of Governors
Our second meeting of the autumn term was postponed for a week because of the Ofsted inspection, which gave us an opportunity to discuss in detail the feedback from the inspectors.
The inspection result is good news for the school, showing that we are convincingly on the right track towards excellence. All our students, parents and carers have played an important part in this, and I was particularly pleased to hear our students described by the lead inspector as excellent ambassadors for the school.
Our 6th form won high praise from the inspectors, and I encourage anyone thinking about post‐16 options to find out more about the excellent all‐round experience we offer.
As Governors we will now be looking to the Headteacher and staff to consider the areas for development highlighted by Ofsted, and make sure they are incorporated as appropriate in the School Development Plan.
We also welcomed two new parent governors, Diana Brown and Philip Cavendish, and I look forward to working with them. We still have one vacancy for a parent governor which I hope we will fill next term.
Finally, I gave a presentation as Chair of Governors to the PSA this term, and would particularly like to thank everyone involved for their fantastic support for the school.

Claire Allaway has produced a presentation that highlights some of the fantastic outcomes of successful bids made by the school for funds raised by the PSA. These include support for the Hillcrest Charity Project and Model UN, improvements to the school environment and opportunities for outside productions, including Bigfoot Theatre’s production for Year 9 as well as invaluable resources for Art, Textiles, Design & Technology, and Science. Her presentation is available to view on the PSA section of the school website.

Media Studies Research Trip to the British Film Institute Library
On November 14th and 15th A Level Media Studies students visited the British Film Institute Library in central London.
The BFI National Library collections date from the age of the pre‐cinema magic lanterns to today's global entertainment industry. These are diverse in scope and format, and in many cases they are also unique. Students had the opportunity to read and make notes from a selection of the 62,000 books and pamphlets, 6,000 journals, 2,000.000 press cuttings held in the library. These include general reference works, memoirs and biographies, academic texts, film and TV tie‐ins, published scripts, theses, broadcasting policy, conference papers, technical manuals, economic reports and many more.
All the students worked exceptionally well for five hours – most were so involved in their work that they only took one 30 minute lunch break!
Students have used their notes to write their Critical Investigation – a 2000 word essay in response to their research question.

The international delegations acquitted themselves very well indeed (winning 8 awards in total – 4 of them going to Pine Grove School in India) and really added to the Global feel of the event.
This year Highgate Wood took twenty‐four delegates (for 14 of whom it was their first ever conference) and provided five of our most experienced students as Committee Chairs. Each and every one of them worked incredibly hard – both in the weeks of preparation and in the Conference itself; they did a fantastic job and were a real credit to the school. Four of our first‐time delegates even won awards.

LONDON INTERNATIONAL MODEL UN CONFERENCE
Highgate Wood School took 29 students to participate in the first Two‐Day International Model UN Conference at the London UN Headquarters of the IMO on Friday and Saturday 9th‐10th December.
This year the December London Global Classroom conference has expanded dramatically, with the number of schools participating, now including International delegations from as far away as Japan, the Middle East, Cyprus and India.
With a total of 37 schools at the conference the debates were intense and conducted to an exceptionally high standard, dealing with the Man Made Consequences of Global Warming.

Following the successful Open Evening, where there were over 300 visitors to meet A level teachers and look at the 6th Form facilities, students in Year 11 can now apply for courses beginning in September 2012. In January 2012 there will be opportunities to experience A level taster lessons as well as attend sessions on selecting the best combinations of courses.
The deadline for applications is on Friday 10th February and interviews with Mr Charlesworth, Mr Cozier and Mr Guenault will take place in February and March.
Former Student Mattin Biglari finished the presentation with a reminder of how well students who have completed A levels at Highgate Wood School Sixth Form can do. Mattin is in his third year of a History degree at Cambridge University having scored A grades at Highgate Wood in all four of his A levels.
Further details of taster sessions and seminars on selecting courses will be given to Year 11 in the New Year.

January 2012 Exams External GCSE and A‐level exams start in earnest on Tuesday the 10th of January 2012 and finish on the 2nd of February 2012. The school’s hall, gym and numerous smaller rooms around the site will be filled with students seeking to do their utmost to gain top marks. Please help them by moving quietly around the school so that you don’t disrupt their efforts. Students taking exams are reminded to abide by the official rules and regulations. Students must not take mobile phones into exams, must not wear hooded tops or scarves and must use black ink pens. Any equipment allowed into an exam must be placed in a clear plastic case. Students can take bottled water into an exam, in a clear unlabelled bottle. They should arrive 15 minutes before the start of an examination and have all the necessary equipment. Exams begin at 8.50am and 2pm. Individual Exam Timetables have been issued to all students. A comprehensive list of all exams, their start time and duration are on the school website, under the Learning tab.

Debate Mate only began this year but well over 60 student regularly attend the club on Wednesdays after school. According to our three Debate Mate mentors, we have the largest number of students
involved in Debate Mate of all the London schools! On Thursday 26th January, Highgate Wood School will be hosting this year's first round of the Urban Debate League. This is the first of three small debating competitions organised by Debate Mate for schools across London to compete against other local schools. Students from up to six visiting schools will compete against three Highgate Wood debating teams, which will be a great opportunity to put their debating skills to practice.
Lysistrata to brighten February
The school play will run from Wednesday 22nd to Friday 24th February 2012.
This year’s production will be a version of the Greek comedy battle of the sexes, Lysistrata by Aristophanes.
It will be a risqué version of the famous story, set in prohibition‐era America, with the roles reversed: boys playing girls and girls playing boys.
Tickets will be on sale closer to the time.
The eco‐schools team want your unwanted clothes, shoes, bags, belts, hats, curtains, towels and bedding in any condition! Highgate Wood School are teaming up with Phil the Bag, an organisation which collects unwanted textiles with the aim of recycling them thereby reducing landfill waste and also helping out charities such as Barnardos. In addition the school will earn money on every bag of textiles we collect—and this can be used to fund the eco‐schools group and other areas of the school. The more we donate to Phil the Bag the more money we receive and the more we can spend on our students. We will receive bags in the New Year to hand out to students to be filled, though we can also accept textiles packed in different bags. We have a provisional date of 28th February for them to collect your donations and will be accepting donations at any point between then and now. We will also run a second collection date towards the end of June. So don’t dump your old clothes. Donate them to us! All bags should be brought to Mr Grimmett in P17 (all donations should be clean as he doesn't want a smelly room!)
As part of the Year 7 Enrichment Programme, all Year 7 students participated in an Enterprise Day in November. Students worked in their
business groups all day, and were set several challenges throughout the day. They were asked to come up with an idea for a new healthy drink for teenagers. They had to design the packaging for the drink, the marketing campaign, calculate the finances and present their ideas to their class. Two teams from each tutor group made it to the final in the afternoon. These groups had to present from the stage in the Main Hall to the whole year group ‐ a daunting task for some teachers, let alone groups of eleven year olds! After much deliberation from the judges and on‐line voting by Year 7, the winners were announced as 'Fresh' from 7W. They devised a lemonade drink which didn't use any additives and was cool and refreshing ‐ hence the name 'Fresh'.

The Year 10 Rugby competition saw Woodside High, Park View Academy, Aylward Academy, and Highgate Wood School all battle it out to be crowned North London Champions. Highgate Wood played some terrific rugby throughout, scoring possibly the try of the tournament against Aylward. Highgate Wood were deserved winners on the day, and now go on to play against the winners of the Herts competition for the right to play in the London Finals.
The Year 9 North London Rugby League Championships was a thrilling yet torrid affair between Highgate Wood, Park View Academy, Aylward Academy, and Woodside High School. The Highgate Wood School Year 9 displayed all the characteristics of a star team representing the school superbly and finishing overall in second place.
This year’s Haringey Schools’ Cross Country Championships saw a record entry with the largest number of runners ever. Over 300 students from schools across the Borough took part over a fast grassland course at White Hart Lane Community Sports Centre on Friday 25th November 2011. A big congratulations needs to go to all of the HWS students who were involved on the day and represented their school so well. A special mention must to go to Lucy Carter for winning and Lauren Gee for placing third in the girls Year 8/9 combined age group. Age group results are as follows: 1st in the 8/9 Girls and 10/11 Girls age groups. 2nd in the 6/7 Boys age group. 3rd in the 10/11 Boys age group. 7th in both the 6/7 Girls and 8/9 Boys. A thank you also needs to go to Mr McDougall for helping the PE department get the students to the event. Well done and congratulations again to those students.

UNIFORM REMINDER
With winter approaching, it is very important for students to be suitably dressed for the cold weather. Below is the extract from our uniform code regarding coats:
...it should be plain coloured with no offensive or obvious logos or slogans. Dark colours are preferred. Coats must be large enough so uniform jackets can be worn under the coat. No hoodies – these will be confiscated.
Learning to make use of the MLE During the Spring term we will be developing the use of the Managed Learning Environment, the web space where students will be able to access homework, resources and other materials to support their learning ‐ as well as allowing students
to communicate back to their teachers. To help families use these new tools we will be running hands‐on training sessions for parents and carers after school during the second week of February (6th ‐ 10th). That week also coincides with the school’s focus on Internet Safety, so we will also be providing support and guidance to help keep you and your children safe on‐line, as well as providing information to help you make best use of our other systems in school including the on‐line payment system for school meals, Wisepay, the school’s text and e‐mail system and the school’s twitter feed. More information on the Parent Information Week will be given out during the early part of next term.
Film fans were in for a treat on the last weekend in November when over fifteen student films were screened at the Highgate Wood Film Festival. Particularly popular were Tessie Orange‐Turners plasticine animation Reality Check, Conor Georgiou's documentary My Dad On The Moon and Gertie Makes the Grade about a ghost who haunts Highgate Wood.

Did you know … just registering your child for Free School Meals (FSM) means that as well as you getting the benefits, the school gets extra money?
Register now to make sure we don’t miss out and you don’t miss out!
The Government is giving money to schools to help children from lower income families do their very best. This funding is called the ‘Pupil Premium’.
For every child registered for FSM Highgate Wood School gets £488 this year. We really believe that everyone matters and with this money we could subsidise students for school trips; improve facilities and staffing for students to study at school; provide hardship support for students in need; improve access to guidance, mentoring and support and fund a variety of other methods for supporting
students and families. If you are registered for FSM you could also get subsidised music lessons, subsidies for school trips, 16‐19 bursary grants, priority access to careers guidance and other opportunities during your seven years at HWS.
Please register as soon as possible to make sure your child and others in their class don’t miss out.
No one will know you have registered and it will not affect any other benefits you are claiming. The benefit will be automatically put on your child’s ID/lunchcard every day so no fuss or publicity.

4. If you don’t want your child to have the school meals they can continue as normal – as long as you qualify and are registered, the school still gets £488 extra.
