Jesuit High School

The faculty, staff and students of Jesuit High School would like to take this opportunity to thank our many friends for their continued

support of Jesuit’s athletic program. One important aspect of the education offered to the students of Jesuit High School throughout the nearly 50 years has been the fine tradition of athletic competition.

The advertisements in this booklet were sold by the Jesuit Booster Club to help support the students and the programs of the school. Please patronize the businesses who generously chose to advertise in this program; they, together with loyal support of the Jesuit Booster Club are, in great part, responsible for our school’s continued development and success.

Mission Statement Jesuit High School of Sacramento is a Roman Catholic college preparatory dedicated to forming competent, young men as conscientious leaders in compassionate service to others for the greater glory of God.

Policy of Non-DiscriminationJesuit High School admits students of any religion, race, color, national origin or disability to the rights, privileges, programs and activities made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability in the administration of its educational policies, scholarship and loan programs, employment or other school administered programs.

Dear JHS Fans,

Welcome to Jesuit High School! The athletic program of Jesuit High is a storied one of notable individual and team excellence made possible through your

enthusiasm and your generosity. Please accept my thanks for all that you continue to do to support our student-athletes, their coaches and our JHS community.

Vince Lombardi once said, “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.” (I like to think that he first learned the meaning of those words while he was coaching football at Fordham University.) Coach Lombardi’s words reflect well the purpose of an education in the Jesuit tradition. It is not just the possession of intellect or strength that makes us great students or great athletes. Rather, it is how we take what we have been given and use it all for God’s greater glory.

What will we do with what we have been given?

All of us, in every moment of every day, have the opportunity to contribute to our school community so that it is known not just by our words but by our works. To our student-athletes, I encourage you to learn from the hard-earned wisdom of your parents, coaches and teachers. To our parents, coaches and teachers, I encourage you to be role models worthy of emulation and respect. And to our alumni, benefactors and supporters, I encourage you to be inspired by what our young men accomplish. To all of us, whether on the field, in the stand, or in the classroom, whether in victory or defeat, let us possess the courage to be measured so that the world might know who we are.

Our sports success over the years has come because of the great challenges served up by Jesuit’s competitors. These challenges have made our athletes and coaches work harder, become more skillful and give opportunity to show all who come to see our teams play what is possible when talent and desire combine in response to challenge. I welcome you and all your fans to our campus.

Friends, thank you for your support of our athletic programs. We appreciate the individuals and the companies who advertise with us. And to our awesome JHS Booster Club, please accept a very special thanks for all of your extraordinary support of our athletes and their coaches.

Your generosity supports the essential and practical needs that allow Jesuit High School to preserve the exceptional quality of our athletic programs.

May God bless you. GO MARAUDERS!

Dear Maurader Parents, Friends and Fans,

Welcome to the 2012-13 Marauders’ Fall Season! The young men you are cheer-ing on train hard for countless hours under the direction of talented and dedicated

coaches. These student-athletes wear their school colors with pride and work to be positive representatives of their families and Jesuit High School. It is a joy to watch them participate and compete in the sports they love while growing in their understand-ing of what it means to be part of a team.

Jesuit High School has a long-standing tradition of excellence and good sportsmanship. As a supporter of our athletic program, you are an important part of that tradition.

As a Jesuit school, we strive to educate the “whole person,” and our co-curricular athletic program is an integral part of that education for the student-athletes involved in it. I encourage you to read our Athletic Mission Station, which comes from the Jesuit Secondary Education Association’s “Athletics Mission Statement for a Jesuit School,” as it puts into context the importance of athletics in a Jesuit High School. Among other things, the statement notes, “Through participation in athletics at a Jesuit high school, students will mature physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually.” This growth will come through individual and team victories and defeats, both big and small. The statement also reminds us that, “…the student-athlete learns that God is active in all things…” Placing God at the center of their athletic experiences will benefit our young men in immeasurable ways.

I thank you for your support today and know that, for many of you, the most important support you will give a student-athlete and his coaches will take place off the field or pitch, away from the course or outside the pool. I appreciate your partnership as we endeavor to make our student-athletes’ experiences the best they can be.

I would also like to thank our Director of Athletics Mr. Chris Fahey ’92; our Assistant Director of Athletics Mr. Ross Evans; our Administrative Assistant Athletic Director Ms. Robin Cummings; and all of our coaches and volunteers for their good work. The time and energy they put into making our athletic programs top-notch experiences for our student-athletes is commendable.

God bless you and your families. Go Marauders!

Sincerely,

Brianna K. LatkoPrincipal

From the Director of Athletics

Athletics Mission Statement An interscholastic athletic program as a co-curricular activity is an integral part of the total education and growth experience at Jesuit High School. Athletics is designed to affirm and promote Ignation values and engage student-athletes fully in mind, body and spirit. Student-athletes, coaches and parents are called upon to work together in a true spirit of sportsmanship to assist in creating an environment in which those Ignatian values can be revealed, tested and proven relevant both to participants and the entire school community.

Through participation in athletics at a Jesuit high school, students will mature physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. They will learn to take responsibility for personal growth by developing loyalty, pride, integrity and commitment. Athletics provides the opportunity for the student-athlete to exhibit a progression of physical skills and knowledge of a particular sport, enabling him to apply these skills and knowledge to new situations and a variety of learning formats. Through participation in athletics, the student-athlete learns that God is active in all things and that individual and liturgical prayer will bring him closer to God. The student-athlete comes to trust that he is known and loved by God: that love invites a personal response, which is an expression of movement within the human heart beyond self-interest or self-centeredness. The student-athlete is called to be conscious of the call to be a leader in service and to acknowledge his active commitment toward fostering a just society. Every member of a Jesuit high school community must seek to encourage, instill and foster such growth and development in all student-athletes.

Dear Parents, Friends and Fans of Jesuit,

Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year. I am looking forward to another year of Jesuit Athletics and would also like to welcome the Class of 2016 to Jesuit High

School. I hope that many of you decide to become involved with our athletic program along with the many other incredible co-curricular opportunities offered by Jesuit.

Last year was another successful one for Jesuit Athletics. Our Varsity Teams captured nine league titles, and three teams (Water Polo (Jesuit’s 100 Section Championship), Golf and Track & Field) each won Sac-Joaquin Section Championships, while Rugby captured the 2012 California State Championship. Additionally, four teams finished as section runners-up (Swimming & Diving, Basketball, Soccer and Tennis).

I would like to again call your attention to the California Interscholastic Federation’s “Pursuing Victory with Honor” program, which is based on good sportsmanship. I am extremely proud of the way our school community treats both officials and our guests from other schools. It is important that we continue to model that respectful behavior for our students to witness.

Thank you to the Booster Club for their tremendous support of Jesuit Athletics. Their coordination of volunteers to work at all of the home athletic events makes it possible for our coaches and staff to concentrate on the games. The Athletic Department expresses its appreciation to the Booster Board and their President, Scott Hamiliton, and I urge all of you to be a part of this club and become involved with our school’s co-curricular programs. Furthermore, I’d like to thank our game-day staff for football, Tim Fleming ’77 (announcer), Mark Hilder ’80 (scoreboard operator) and John ’70 and Ellie Meissner (Chain Gang Organizers) for their continued support of Jesuit Football over the years.

Finally, please support our many patrons who are advertised in these pages and have signs placed at our athletic venues during our games and matches. Your sponsorship enables us to purchase many needed items for our teams and student-athletes in order to provide them with the finest equipment and facilities possible as they represent Jesuit High School through our sports programs.

On behalf of our coaching staff, Assistant Director of Athletics Ross Evans and Administrative Assistant Athletic Director Robin Cummings, I want to thank you for your continued support of Jesuit High School. We look forward to serving you this year and hope you enjoy the athletic experience at Jesuit.

Sincerely,

Chris Fahey ’92Director of Athletics

As a Jesuit, Catholic college preparatory high school, we are committed to the

excellence of our broad-based program of academics, co-curriculars and spiritual formation. While that excellence can be measured through our students’ recognition and success, we are most concerned by what happens as a result of a graduate’s education. Our goal is to help form leaders of competence, conscience, compassion and commitment to God in service who will work for justice and quality of life for all. Upon graduation, it is our aim that a student will be open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving and committed to doing justice.

The Jesuit High School experience does not end with graduation. Our goal is to inspire and enable graduates to put their values into action with an active life of service for humanity, for the greater glory of God.

The 2012 journey...the players have been working very hard since June. Each day has been more challenging than previous, physically and mentally. We are very fortunate to

have this wonderful opportunity to share these moments with one another. The physicality of the sport of football requires being challenged every day, which is rightfully so, but without question, the love, the passion, the community and leadership skills it lends is enduring.

Each and every young man that wears the Jesuit jersey has made a commitment to his teammate, and that commitment is accountability; which means from one player to another, you can count on me to do the right thing on and off the field. This is where we are as a group, working on this process.

Our coaches, parents and school community are putting in a great effort to make this challenging experience meaningful and enjoyable. We all give of our time, with love and care, keeping in mind that our objective is to assist our young men as they grow.

Each and every week we will compete and play inspiring football.

The Jesuit High School Cross Country team started the 2012 season with a strong group of returning harriers in its quest to come back to the California State Meet after a two

year absence. A strong presence of underclassmen from the 2011 squad allows Jesuit to bring back three of their top five runners and five of their top eight runners that placed sixth in Division II at the section meet.

The Marauders were ranked eighth in the section (fifth in Division II) at the start of the season based on returnees from 2011, though only 24 seconds separate teams five through eight in the rankings. The Marauders will face formidable opponents in Del Campo and Bella Vista, the 2011 Division II section champions and runners-up, as well as Woodcreek and league rival Folsom. The Marauders are projected to finish in the top three in the league and will battle for the title with Oak Ridge and Folsom High Schools.

Chris Goode ’13 leads the returning Marauders after spending the 2011 season as Jesuit’s number-one runner in ten out of eleven meets and a ninth-place finish at section finals in the 3200m during the track season, posting a best time of 9:46. Fellow Senior Sam Stoll ’13, who placed second in the 1600m during the track season with a best of 4:27, provides a strong 1-2 punch as Goode and Stoll are the 14th and 15th fastest returnees from the section meet. Flavio Medrano ’13, Tristyn Martin ’14 and Andrew Brown ’14 round out the top five returnees. The Marauders welcome back Greg Woollgar ’13, who sat out most of the 2011 season with an injury, but boasts a time of 4:37 in the 1600m and has been a consistent performer since his recovery.

After an impressive track season, Andrew Huitt ’15 looks to contend for the Marauders along with Bryan Brennan ’14, Logan Day ’14, Christopher Sommers ’13, Tommy Malone ’13 and Jack Richardson ’13. The incoming Junior class placed second at the section meet in 2011 in the Sophomore division and will give the Marauders depth in 2012.

The Cross Country Team boasts nine state titles and six team appearances at the state meet under the guidance of Head Coach Walt Lange, now in his 43rd year of coaching at Jesuit. Coach Lange is supported by assistant coaches David Zielke (21st season), Tom Witzgall ’98 (7th season) and Nick Lai (2nd season).

Jesuit Cross Country kicked off the 2012 season with the annual Meeting of the Marauders at Ancil Hoffman Park on Saturday, August 25.

Jesuit High School Water Polo players began double-day workouts on August 6 and continued through Labor Day. Varsity Coach Phil Cozens, Assistant Coach Colin

O’Connor ’04, Assistant Coach Mark Jones and Assistant Coach Keegan Smith welcomed 21 players to the Varsity 2012 season and 67 overall. This year’s team is hoping to build on the tradition of section championships and is working to defend their two-time CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championship titles. This year’s team looks to re-load, with Hudson Grieve ’13 and Eric Glasky ’13 as the only two returners that had significant playing time on last year’s squad. Steven Taylor ’13, Jansen Coen ’13 and Justin Fairbrook ’13, are vying for starting roles to help bolster the Marauders. In addition, the Sophomore and Freshman classes are also talented and bring the promise of continued success for the Water Polo Team. Prior to the regular season, the Varsity Team entered in the John Schmitt Tournament, which is functionally the Northern California Championship. That elite tournament brings together the finest teams in Northern California, including Bellarmine Prep, Miramonte of Orinda, Acalanes of Lafayette, Rio Americano and league rival Davis. This early tournament will be a test of the players’ conditioning and strategic implementation. After the Schmitt Tournament the team plays in several key individual games before traveling to Irvine for the S & R Cup that pits eight elite teams from Southern California against eight teams from Northern California in a single elimination tournament. Local games of note include the September 19 league game at Rising Power against league-rival Oak Ridge; October 17 at Davis in a league game showdown; and October 18 against Rio Americano at Jesuit (the battle of American River Drive) under the lights. Traditionally, Jesuit Water Polo has been selected for playoffs, but the CIF Section has now added new powers Ponderosa and Oak Ridge to the league with Jesuit and Davis. Only three schools qualify for section playoffs. Playoffs are in early November and continue to the finals on November 10 at the Summer Sanders Swim Stadium in Roseville.

The 2012 Varsity Soccer team hopes to continue and surpass last year’s successes. The 2011 squad won the Delta River League with a record of 9-0-1. This team finished

the season as the Division I Sac-Joaquin Section Finalists and posted an overall record of 24-2-4, a Region Four ranking and a #25 National Ranking in the ESPNRise Top 50 poll. The Marauders were ranked in both the NSCAA and ESPNRise Polls the entire season. This team had the most difficult schedule in the country competing against teams like Marquette Prep (WI), Dematha (DC), and Chaminade (MO). Despite losing five starters by the halfway point of the season, the Marauders lost two games all season–both in extra time penalty kicks. Three Seniors moved on to college programs with scholarships, including Jeff Rose ’12 (Seattle University), Peter Wajda ’12 (Chico State), and Steven Guzman (UC Davis). These Seniors join a long list of Marauders actively playing at the collegiate and professional levels.

This season’s team hopes to continue the Marauder tradition of excellence. The 2012 team is composed of a talented group of Juniors and Seniors boasting five returning starters and eleven returning players. Challenges will begin early with games against local talent like Granite Bay, Christian Brothers, Natomas (Div. III Champions), Davis, University (San Francisco, Calif.) and Marin Academy (San Rafael, Calif.). Jesuit will also test their talents traveling to Portland, Ore. and St. Louis, Mo.. Games include matches against Jesuit-Portland and ranked teams from Pennsylvania and Maine. Hopefully, with unselfish play and hard work, the 2012 team will achieve the goal of another section title.

Both the Freshmen and Sophomores will combine efforts this year and continue their winning ways as they again hope to dominate non-league and league play. The JV will play with two teams–Red and Gold. Both teams will face tough competition in the Delta River League and in tough non-league play. The teams promise a bright future for Marauder Soccer.

CiF Pursuing Victory with Honor

Principles:1. The essential elements of character building and ethics in CIF sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these “six pillars of character.”

2. It’s the duty of School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership - including coaches, athletic administrators, program directors and game officials - to promote sportsmanship and foster good character by teaching, enforcing, advocating and modeling these “six pillars of character.”

3. To promote sportsmanship and foster the development of good character, school sports programs must be conducted in a manner that enhances the academic, emotional, social, physical and ethical development of student-athletes and teaches them positive life skills that will help them become personally successful and socially responsible.

4. Participation in school sports programs is a privilege, not a right. To earn that privilege, student-athletes must abide by the rules and they must conduct themselves, on and off the field, as positive role models who exemplify good character.

5. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership shall establish standards for participation by adopting and enforcing codes of conduct for coaches, athletes, parents and spectators.

6. All participants in high school sports must consistently demonstrate and demand scrupulous integrity and observe and enforce the spirit as well as the letter of the rules.

7. The importance of character, ethics and sportsmanship should be emphasized in all communications directed to student-athletes and their parents.

8. School Boards, superintendents, school administrators, parents and school sports leadership must ensure that the first priority of their student-athletes is a serious commitment to getting an education and developing the academic skills and character to succeed.

9. School Boards, superintendents, principals, school administrators and everyone involved at any level of governance in the CIF must maintain ultimate responsibility for the quality and integrity of CIF programs. Such individuals must assure that education and character development responsibilities are not compromised to achieve sports performance goals and that the academic, social, emotional, physical and ethical well-being of student-athletes is always placed above desires and pressure to win.

10. All employees of member schools must be directly involved and committed to the academic success of student-athletes and the character-building goals of the school.

11. Everyone involved in competition including parents, spectators, associated study body leaders, and all auxiliary groups have a duty to honor the traditions of the sport and to treat other participants with respect. Coaches have a special responsibility to model respectful behavior and the duty to demand that their student-athletes refrain from disrespectful conduct including verbal abuse of opponents and officials, profane or belligerent trash-talking, taunting and inappropriate celebrations.

59

Page 62: Jesuit High School Fall 2012 Sports Program

62

12. School Boards, superintendents, and school administrators of CIF member schools must ensure that coaches, whether paid or voluntary, are competent to coach. Training or experience may determine minimal competence. These competencies include basic knowledge of: 1) The character building aspects of sports, including techniques and methods of teaching and reinforcing the core values comprising sportsmanship and good character; 2) The physical capabilities and limitations of the age group coached as well as the first aid; 3) Coaching principles and the rules and strategies of the sport.

13. Because of the powerful potential of sports as a vehicle for positive personal growth, a broad spectrum of school sports experiences should be made available to all of our diverse communities.

14. To safeguard the health of athletes and the integrity of the sport, school sports program must actively prohibit the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and performance enhancing substances, as well as a demand compliance with all laws and regulations, including those related to gambling and the use of drugs.

15. Schools that offer athletic programs must safeguard the integrity of their programs. Commercial relationships should be continually monitored to ensure against inappropriate exploitation of the school’s name or reputation. There should be no undue influence of commercial interests. In addition, sports programs must be prudent, avoiding undue dependency on particular companies or sponsors.

16. The profession of coaching is a profession of teaching. In addition to teaching the mental and physical dimensions of their sport, coaches, through words and example, must also strive to build the character of their athletes by teaching them to be trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring and good citizens.
