Generally, we are exceptionally young. We are in the midst of a culture change here at Prairie du Chien, but I am impressed with what I have seen up to this point with the players. If par-ents and players begin to believe in what they are being asked to do by the coaching sta, we will be able to see improvement as the season moves along.

Returning in the backeld are: Quarterback Brogan Potter, Running back Casey Hogenson, and fullback Peyton Hall. We did not score many points last year, had too many turnovers, and lost almost our entire oensive line, so there is a good bit of work to do.

Defensively we were not very strong last year and we need to put a real emphasis on that side of the ball. ere are returners with Adrian Johanningmeier, Chad Mara, Hunter Sheckler, and Gunnar Kravchuk, but we will need to really improve on funda-mentals such as tackling.

Conference, 3-3 Playos). Going into my 20th year of coaching at the high school level - I am stepping back in, as Jon Boyle, former head coach, has moved back to Marsheld to be closer to family.

Who are some of the top teams in your conference? What is your conference outlook, goals for the season?

Dodgeville-Mineral Point, and Platteville will be the top teams in our conference this season. As a team, our goal is to score as close as possible to Lancaster, River Valley, and Rich-land Center. With half our team being rst year runners, we’ll have to learn quickly in order to compete with other experi-enced conference runners.

What will be the keys to your success this season? e keys to success this season are to be able to build up our

base without running into injuries and also having girls step up into leadership roles. is will be dicult, as many of our girls are new to the sport, however, I believe it can and will be done.

What was last year’s record? We placed sixth place at the Conference Meet last year.

What do you consider your team’s strengths and challenges? Our biggest strength is our team camaraderie. We have

many girls who are able to laugh and have good time while train-ing and getting into great shape. Our biggest challenges will be to compete within our exceptionally tough conference. We will be racing against some of the top runners in the state and it is our goal to stick as close to them as possible.

Other Key Players: Jacob Lenzendorf, Josh Lenzendorf, TJ Sprosty, Karson Prodzinski

Who are some of the top teams in your conference? What is your conference outlook, goals for the season?

Similar to last year, the two predicted top teams within the SWC Conference will be Platteville and Dodgeville/Mineral Point, both of whom pulled away from the eld at the champi-onships last year. In a spectacular performance, the Prairie du Chien’s boys team pulled o a third place nish, one of its best nishes in recent years. Our goal will be to at least match this nish at the conference championships, and narrow the gap be-tween ourselves and second place. Afterwards, improvement on our 12th place WIAA Sectional nish should be expected.

What will be the keys to your success this season? We’ve lost ve seniors to graduation, three of whom were

our top ve scorers. It will be crucial for last season’s juniors and sophomores to step up and accept the challenge of leadership on our team.

What was last year’s record? We were 3-3 in dual meets last year, with a third place overall

nish at the SWC Conference Championships.

What do you consider your team’s strengths and challenges? Our biggest challenge will be adjusting our runners who are

without varsity racing experience to compete at a higher cali-ber level of competition. We are fortunate in that these younger athletes have begun to embrace a “winning” vision of running,

This season another step in building of PdC Cross Country

which will provide benets as the season reaches the champion-ship weeks, in addition to supplying a great environment for early season workouts.

Anything you would like to add?is year’s season places an emphasis on the expectations

our athletes, parents and coaching sta will hold each other to. We expect this season to be another step forward in the build-ing process of Prairie du Chien Cross Country.

year; Megan Johnson, senior, sectional golfer last yearPromising returning players: Emily Trautsch, junior; Jessica

Gutknecht, junior; Autumn Kohler, junior; Taylor Hendrickson, sophomore; Jennifer Slaght, sophomore

Strengths/concerns of this year’s team:Tara and Megan, the two returning seniors, have a lot of ex-

perience, having come o a year where we went to sectionals as a team. Tara, for the past two years, has consistently been one of the team’s top golfers. I look to her to be a strong leader this year. e rest of the team is fairly inexperienced. We are looking forward to seeing how we match up with our conference teams this year.

Comments on the conference race:Lancaster always has a strong team. ey were the confer-

ence champs last year and have almost their entire team return-ing. I look for them to be very strong in the conference this year again.

By Coach Jim Rohde

e 2014 men’s soccer team is poised for a very exciting and competitive season. e roster has nine returning letter winners, of which six were full season starters and three were named All Conference Honorable Mention, which should make for a very exciting PDCHS soccer season.

Six veteran seniors, one junior and a group of nine sopho-mores are returning with signicant increases in size, speed and skill levels. In addition, four freshman are taking the next step up after playing last fall in the Prairie du Chien Youth League.

e SWC should be a very close and competitive conference this year, making for many exciting games and an open door for the Conference Championship. e combination of the strong upper classmen with experience, strength and leadership and the young, fast and talented sophomores and freshmen, should provide a strong and controlling defense with a quicker, more precise and unpredictable attack on oense.

e result, some very exciting and enjoyable soccer matches with big victories for the Blackhawks. See you this fall at the Blu View pitch.

School/team: Wauzeka-Steuben

Head Coach: Brad GillitzerAssistant Coaches: Cody Mullikin, AV Roth,Volunteer Coach: Tim Yager

Key players: All returning seniors! We have a pretty big re-turning group of 7-9 seniors.

Who are some of the top teams in your conference? What is your conference outlook, goals for the season?

In the past and as history has shown in recent years, De Soto has been very good, you also have to look at North Crawford and Seneca (it was not long ago they were in the State Game). You know at this point in the season you have to think everyone has the chance to put together a really good team.

Our goals this season are to successfully implement our new oense and defense which will take some time to get comfort-able with. I think we also need to work on teamwork and really come together as a team, as a program, and as a school; and try to get the most out of everyone involved, to succeed. My goal as the coach for this program is to achieve and hold our student athletes to a higher standard and in the end give ourselves a ghting chance to make the playos at the end of the season. As any sports fan knows; once your in, anything can happen!

What will be the keys to your success this season?Like any football program; hard work, “team” work, and

staying healthy. Also, grasping our new defense and oense in time to become successful will be key.

What was last year’s record? 1-8

What do you consider your team’s strengths and challenges? Our strength’s must be our seniors. And the challenges will

be how they grasp our new defense and oense. And how I do as a rst year head coach!

What are the expectations and challenges for the team this season?

e biggest challenge for our team is keeping everyone healthy since we have 18 players.

What can be expected from the team on oense? Our team has good speed so we expect to be able to pass and

run the ball well.

What can be expected from the defense and special teams? We have a strong corps of linebackers and corner backs so we

need to focus on stopping the run.

Who are some of the top teams in the Ridge and Valley?Ithaca has a strong football program with a lot of solid play-

Seneca girls will work hard to contend for the R&V CrownHead Coach: Dawn RayAssistant and JV Coach: Angie Mabb

Who are some of the top teams in the conference and what is your conference outlook, goals for the season?

Some of the top teams in the Ridge and Valley Conference should be La Farge, Ithaca and North Crawford. Conference out-look: e Conference can be up for grabs this year. Anyone can be playing tough on any given night. Seneca has the ability to be one of the top teams. Goals for the season: To improve each game and push ourselves to our capability. We need to nd our spark and we can roll tough with it, to get the killer instinct and roll with it. We will be working hard to contend for the confer-ence title and to be ready for the tournament trail.

Last year’s record: We were 6-1 and second in the conference behind North Crawford.

What are the keys to success this season? We have some very talented girls and we need to believe in

ourselves and push ourselves and everything else will follow. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction. We have girls with great attributes, and when we get everything rolling, we can cre-ate a dominant team. I have a good bunch of seniors in Morgan Payne, Taylor Redman, Michaela Chambers, Morgan Wall and Paige Forde. Junior Nicole Manders will play and be tough in the middle for us while Morgan Payne and Taylor Redman will control our outside with Michaela Chambers either controlling the other middle or setting up the other girls. Sophomore Becky Trautsch will help set our hitters. Jena Konichek will always bring a positive attitude to the team. We have two strong fresh-men playing for us this year. ey are Emily Garfoot and libero Alivia Salivas. Both girls will start. ese girls have a great at-titude and they all need to believe in themselves and we can be a successful team.

Members of the Seneca High School volleyball team are, front row: Paige Forde, Michaela Chambers, Manager Nicky Trautsch, Samantha Boland, Manager Makenna Greene, Morgan Payne and Taylor Redman. Middle row: Manager Liv Swanson, Emily Garfoot, Morgan Wall, Jena Konichek and Man-ager Erin Sime. turns some really great talent as well. Black Hawk coming o a state title will have lots of experience for all their returning players and Potosi has a nice nucleus back as well. I look for Shullsburg, Pecatonica and Belmont to make some noise with a nice group of returning players as well and very few seniors last year. We expect to be a much more competitive team in the Six Rivers Conference this year.

Keys to Success: As it is with every team, health will be a huge key to our suc-

cess this season. We return 14 players who had varsity experi-ence in some facet last year. Many of those players are at very key positions, so if this group stays healthy and our freshmen class gives us some depth it will be very benecial. Improving defensively is a priority this season, as the last couple years, the big play has become a real issue. If we can limit those and our

oense continues to improve, we could make some big improve-ment on last year’s record.

Strengths: Experience at Quarterback, Receiver, O-Line should be ben-

ecial. We bring back the whole oensive line from a year ago and the quarterback is in his second year after leading us in

rushing and passing a year ago. It looks as though we will have a large freshmen class, so if we can start stacking those together, we will get our numbers up. Having a JV season this season was a goal we had and it looks as though that is going to happen.

Concerns: We obviously would like to have more depth with our upper

classmen, so we will probably be forced to play some freshmen here and there. We have been forced to do this the last couple years, and we are really trying to avoid this unless we have to.

Strengths/concerns of this year’s team:We’re hoping for some strong hitting and blocking, since we

have a little more height than we did last year. We are looking for more consistent serve receiving, serving, and hitting this year.

Comments on the conference race:Belmont will be tough as they were conference champs last

year, and they have Keeghan Kamps returning. I think it will be a year where any team could take out another from the start to the nish, which makes it a fun and competitive season!

Other comments/any human interest stories on your team:We have a couple of rodeo girls on our team. Sammy Steiger

and Bridgette Myers just got done competing at the National High School Rodeo Finals in July. ey also competed in rodeo in August, which is about the same time volleyball starts. ey do a great job balancing schedules and making it all work! It is nice to see them be successful in both sports!
