K eppel FELS has won new contractsto build two ultra-deepwatersemisubmersible (semi) drilling rigs

worth a combined US$1.04 billion. The orderscame from a subsidiary of repeat customerENSCO International Incorporated (ENSCO).

Secured within a month of each other, theENSCO 8504 and ENSCO 8505 are due forseparate deliveries in 2011 and 2012.

Daniel W. Rabun, Chairman, President & CEOof ENSCO said, “We are pleased that KeppelFELS is constructing all six of our new 8500Series® semis. We are benefiting from synergiesassociated with building all these rigs at oneyard with a partner with whom we have astrong working relationship, and who isfamiliar with our needs.”

The ENSCO 8500 Series® semis can drill inup to 8,500 feet of water. Its features includea two-million-pound quad derrick, offline pipehandling capability, 35,000-feet drillingcapacity, and station-keeping capabilitiesthat meet dynamic positioning 2 (DP-2)requirements, making the rigs ideal fordeepwater development drilling.

K eppel O&M’s proprietarysolutions are gaining hard-wonrespect in the global marine and

offshore industry.

Its offshore arm Keppel FELS madeheadlines in June with four repeat rigorders amounting to some US$1 billionfrom Queiroz Galvão Óleo e Gás (QGOG)and the Seadrill group of companies.

The orders are for two newbuildKFELS B Class jackups, a DSS 38semisubmersible (semi), and an SSDT3600E drilling tender.

QGOG acquires another DSS 38semisubmersible

Brazilian drilling contractor groupQueiroz Galvão Óleo e Gás (QGOG) has

returned to Keppel FELS for its secondDSS 38 semisubmersible drilling rig.

“The repeat semisubmersible order speaksvolumes of QGOG’s deepeningconfidence in us, and the growingacceptance of our DSS 38 design. KeppelO&M is in good stead to add value toBrazil’s offshore sector,” said CH Tong,MD & COO of Keppel O&M.

To be named Alpha Star, the rig may bedeployed in offshore West Africa or SouthAmerica when due for delivery in thesecond half of 2011. QGOG will supplythe rig’s drilling and subsea equipment.

Keppel FELS won the contract forQGOG’s first semisubmersible, Gold Star,in August 2006. Gold Star has been placedunder charter and service contracts with

DSS 38: A new generationdeepwater rig

Innovative and cost efficient, the DSS 38semisubmersible drilling rig is designed tomeet operational needs in the “GoldenTriangle” of deepwater, namely Africa, theGulf of Mexico, and Brazil.

The DSS 38 is rated to drill to depths of30,000 feet below mud line in just over 9,000feet water depth. It contains both vertical andhorizontal riser storage, and is kept inposition by eight 3000kW Azimuthingthrusters.

Able to house up to 130 men, the rigmeasures 103.5 metres in overall length witha main deck size of 69.5 square metres, givingit an operational displacement of some38,000 tonnes.

Including Seadrill’s two latest orders,Keppel FELS has secured 33 orders forthe popular proprietary KFELS B Classjackups since its launch in 2000.

Meanwhile, Seadrill Asia, a subsidiary ofSeadrill Limited, has placed a repeat orderfor a semisubmersible drilling tender.

CH Tong said, “The Seadrill group ofcompanies is an esteemed customer forKeppel. We value their steady flow ofprojects, which attest to their irreplaceabletrust and confidence in us.”

Designed by the Deepwater TechnologyGroup, the KFELS SSDT 3600E drillingtender is expected to be delivered in thefirst quarter of 2011.

When completed, it will join SeadrillAsia’s fleet of six other KFELS SSDT rigsbuilt by companies under the KeppelO&M group. Keppel FELS is nowconstructing West Berani II, number sixin the fleet, which is due for delivery inend 2009.

Drilling tenders used to be deployable only nextto fixed platforms. But the KFELS SSDT serieschanged that, allowing drilling contractors andoperators of deepwaters to work alongside Sparsand Tension Leg Platforms.

A typical SSDT carries high capacity cranes of upto 200 tonnes to deploy a Drilling Equipment Set(DES) onto neighbouring platforms within 12hours. Not only will the latest tender rig forSeadrill Asia feature a crane capacity of 250tonnes, it will also have four mud pumps, andenhanced mooring capabilities tailored fortough drilling needs in offshore South East Asia.The tender can provide accommodation for160 people.

Seadrill Group places three drillingrig orders

Keppel FELS has secured a contract worthUS$420 million to build two KFELS BClass jackup drilling rigs for Oslo StockExchange-listed Seadrill Limited.

The rigs are due for delivery in the secondand fourth quarters of 2010.

structure, columns and braces supportingthe MOPUstor’s legs, and a steel subseastorage tank.

The 3,300,000 bbl storage tank minimisesoffshore production and storage costsby spewing out sea water as oil fills thetank.

Such outfitting jobs deal with manyintricate equipment parts. So beyondmechanical expertise, Keppel Verolmealso brings to the table a timely, refinedprocurement process that keeps costsdown for customers.

When operational in 2009, SBM’sMOPUstor will be deployed to Calgary-based Talisman Energy for redevelopmentof Norway’s Yme field.

K eppel Verolme has won its firstcontract from Single BuoyMoorings Inc. (SBM) to outfit a

Mobile Offshore Production Unit withstorage (MOPUstor).

The MOPUstor is a dual-function pre-drilling and oil production and storagefacility equipped with a regular cantileverjackup rig.

Keppel Verolme’s yard workers havebegun work on the bare bones of theMOPUstor. Besides piping, structural,electrical and instrumentation works, theunit’s key feature – a substructure, willbe installed.

Christened West Ariel in keeping with the tradition of naming Seadrill’s drillingunits after a celestial body, the rig is Keppel O&M’s sixth jackup rig deliverythis year – with five from Keppel FELS and one from Keppel AmFELS.

The proprietary KFELS B Classdesign has proven popularsince its launch in 2000.

Since then, Keppel FELS has built anddelivered 19 such rigs for customersincluding ENSCO Offshore Company,Aban Singapore, and DiamondOffshore.

The company delivered its 20thKFELS B Class drilling rig, the OceanShield, to Diamond Offshore at the endof April.

Among the world’s deepest drillingrigs in its class, the Ocean Shield canoperate in water depths of up to 350feet.

Another Diamond Offshoreproject, the Victory-classsemisubmersible Ocean Monarch, isdue for completion later thisyear. At Keppel FELS, thesemisubmersible is being upgradedto an ultra-deepwater drilling unitcapable of drilling in water depthsof up to 10,000 feet.

Joining forces for a job well doneIn a show of appreciation for the yard’stimely delivery and good safety record,QGOG presented a US$10,000 bonus toKeppel Batangas on 8 May 2008.

When handing out the cheque, RogerGagnon, QGOG Marine & BFE Managersaid, “We have been looking forward tothis day. There were many challengesduring the past twelve months but yourperseverance has been invaluable inovercoming these obstacles.”

Since 2006, Keppel FELS hassubcontracted offshore constructionprojects out to Keppel Batangas in orderto fulfill its growing orderbook fornewbuild structures. The tie-up hasmaximised resources within KeppelO&M’s network of yards, ensuring timelydeliveries to the valued customers.

The DSS 38 Goldstar project exemplifiesthe close collaboration between Keppel’sPhilippine yards.

Subic Shipyard started fabricating thepontoons’ mid sections in April 2007.Two months later, Keppel Batangas beganproduction work on the pontoons endmodules. It later completed each pontoonby integrating the mid sections deliveredby Subic Shipyard in January 2008 andits own modules.

That was when the port and starboardpontoons were ready to be assembledwith other oil rig modules in Singapore.

Keppel Batangas is now working on fourother offshore fabrication projects forKeppel FELS.

Keppel AmFELS delivered the third of fiveLeTourneau Super 116 jackup rigs toScorpion Offshore Ltd (Scorpion) on 28

July 2008 within budget and two months aheadof schedule.

The feat, achieved amid tight labour supply andrising raw material costs, earned the US-basedwholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel O&M anearly delivery bonus of US$1.2 million.

Lady Sponsor Mrs Susan Padilla christened thejackup rig Offshore Resolute two days prior to itssetting sail for offshore Vietnam to beginoperations in July this year.

At the naming ceremony, President & CEO ofKeppel AmFELS, GS Tan, said, “The OffshoreResolute was completed ahead of schedule, onbudget, and achieved 1.3 million manhourswithout lost time incidents. Such consistency andsuccessful completion reinforces KeppelAmFELS’ reliability and reputation.”

Bermuda-based Scorpion commissionedKeppel AmFELS to build five LeTourneau Super116 jackup rigs in 2005. The first two, OffshoreCourageous and Offshore Defender, were deliveredon time in 2007.

Each rig features a 70-feet cantilever with adrilling depth of some 30,000 feet, allowing forthe maximum reach now available for all but afew harsh environment units. Such rigs canoperate under 350 feet of water as outfitted or inwater of depths up to 400 feet by adding legsections.

With the Offshore Resolute well on its way to drillfor clients, Keppel AmFELS is devoting itsattention to finishing Scorpion’s two remainingLeTourneau Super 116s by their slated deliverydates in 2008 and 2009.

T he Nantong Municipal People’sGovernment has lauded KeppelNantong Shipyard for emerging

among its top five revenue earners inthe marine industry for 2007. Theaccomplishment comes less than threeyears after Keppel set up business in thethriving maritime city.

In a letter to the company, the NantongEconomic and Trade Commission noted,“In 2007, we saw significantdevelopments in the Nantong’s marineindustry. We hope that these companiescould continue to tap the opportunitiesavailable and explore new technologyinnovations, so as to contribute more tothe development of Nantong’s marineindustry.”

Under the guidance of Thijs Wöltgens, President of the Chamberof Commerce in the Netherlands, an independent and expertjury for the awards selected the country’s top 50 ventures basedon the organisations’ turnover, company strategy, and policiesimplementation. They lauded Keppel Verolme’s excellentfinancial management, talent management, and technologyinnovations.

Harold Linssen, President of Keppel Verolme, said, “We are proudto be recognised as one of the best performing companies. Itaffirms the enormous commitment, devotion, and theprofessionalism of our people at Keppel Verolme.”

Keppel Shipyard wins Seatrade Asia

A n impressive line up of maritimeindustry thought-leaders are being

scheduled to speak at Sea Asia 2009. Thiswas revealed at the conference’s officiallaunch at the Reflections at Keppel Bay showgallery.

Although only into its second instalment,the biennial conference to be held from21 to 23 April 2009 is already establishingitself as a premier event for global shippingprofessionals.

More than 10,000 delegates, ship owners,and business leaders from over 45 countriesare expected to convene to address pressingissues related to the future of Asian shipping.

Asian countries now account for 45 percentof the world’s shipping fleet and half of theship orders globally. Therefore, many playersin the region, including Keppel, see value in

recognised at the annual Seatrade AsiaAwards, which made its debut on 13 May2008 this year at the Shangri-La hotel inSingapore.

A ttyah Hassan was one of onlyfive female workers when shejoined Keppel FELS at the

age of 16. Even then, she knew shecould make a difference.

Attyah said, “Many co-workers facedproblems back then but did notknow where to go and whom theycan talk to. I felt I could be theirspokesperson.”

So she joined the company’s unionthree years later in 1982, risingthrough the ranks to become a full-time unionist in 1998. Today, she is‘Sister Attyah’ to Keppel FELS’s 3,500union members and she works hardto ensure they are treated fairly atwork.

At the NTUC’s May Day celebrationson 10 May 2008, Keppel FELS HullSupervisor Sanusi Marsudi won theMay Day Model Worker Award.

Motorised shelter workshops, enclosedblasting chambers, and new gantry cranes arejust some examples of new facilities set up atKeppel Shipyard over the last three years toboost capacity and productivity. The companyhas also adopted the e-transactions portalShipServe in 2007 to streamline procurementprocesses.

The Seatrade Asia Awards is a regional takeon its global counterpart Seatrade Awards. Theawards recognise achievements based on sixbasic principles, including contribution andcommitment to developing the maritimesector, operational or commercial innovation,and social and environmental responsibilies.

In all, Singapore-based organisations tookhome an impressive 10 out of the 19 awardspresented this year.

semisubmersible (semi) — the mosttechnically advanced deepwater drillingrig to be designed and built by Singaporeto date.

The remarkable semi was named MaerskDeveloper by Mrs. Kari Reinertsen, wifeof Øivind Reinertsen, President ofStatoilHydro (North AmericaOperations), on 21 June 2008 in KeppelFELS yard.

The ceremony’s Guest-of-Honour, Mr LimBoon Heng, Minister, Prime Minister’sOffice, said, “About 30% of jackup rigs

The DSS 21 design is jointly developedby the Company’s Deepwater TechnologyGroup, Marine Structure Consultants ofthe Netherlands and Maersk Contractors.

The semi units each feature a dynamicpositioning system that can be attached to aprelaid mooring system. Capable of operatingat water depths of 3,000 metres and drillingdown to 10,000 metres, they are well suitedfor operations in offshore Brazil, West Africa,Gulf of Mexico and South East Asia.

To date, Maersk Contractors has invested overS$3 billion worth of projects with KeppelOffshore & Marine. The projects include theconstruction, repair, and conversion of rigsand floating production storage and offloadingfacilities.

In addition to the deepwater semis, KeppelFELS has also been tasked with building fourjackup rigs for Maersk. The first, MaerskResilient, was delivered in January 2008.

A strong safety record of 5.5 millionincident-free man-hours was achieved bythe yard in the construction of thispremier rig.

Minister of State for Trade and Industry,Mr Lee Yi Shyan, was present when theENSCO 8500 was named by Mrs CarolGaron Durkee, whose husband ToddDurkee is GM, Gulf of Mexico andInternational Deepwater of AnadarkoPetroleum Corporation. This newdeepwater rig has been contracted in theGulf of Mexico to Anadarko and Eni.

Workers at Keppel’s Subic Shipyard in thePhilippines performed the first part of thevessel’s refurbishment and life extension,while the engineering, procurement, and

topside fabrication took place inSingapore simultaneously. When thevessel arrived at Keppel Shipyard, theremaining topside works were carried outand integrated. The vessel can process 175million standard cubic feet of natural gasa day.

The yard carried out life extension andupgrades of a Floating, Storageand Offloading (FSO) vessel for theErawan field in Thailand back in 1997. Italso converted a tanker into an FSO forthe Platong field in Thailand in 2004.

Altogether, Keppel Shipyard hascompleted 76 FPSO and FSO projects. Itis now working on another six.

Meanwhile, sister yard Keppel Singmarineis building a 30,000 bhp Multi-FunctionalSupport Vessel for Ezra Holdings.

The Keppel yards continue to gobeyond delivering quality to itsvalued customers. In April,

Keppel FELS performed work in doublequick time on two distressed rigs, theENSCO 53 and Deep Driller 5, allowingfor their return to regular drillingprogrammes with minimal down-time.

Flying Squad called to action

A distress call from ENSCO InternationalIncorporated (ENSCO) set Keppel FELS’soffshore repair team, the Flying Squad,into action. A team of engineers wasquickly primed to assess the situationwhile materials and equipment requiredfor the repair were prepared.

The Flying Squad, led by PungavanamSithiasagaran, Team Leader and QualityAssurance Supervisor, then went onboardENSCO 53 to commence repair works.The squad completed the contracted workalmost a week ahead of schedule withrequested additional welding alsocompleted in time.

Impressed with the pace and quality ofwork, ENSCO 53 Rig Manager GaryMartin said, “They did an excellent jobcompleting the repairs in a very short timeframe. Keppel FELS has a great team andI thank them for their support.”

Meanwhile, Deep Driller 5 Rig ManagerAshish Sethi was in no panic when an

“Although it was a Sunday, a call toKeppel FELS set the wheels in motion forsurveys to be organised and a berthingspace in the shipyard to receive the rig.This promptness and sense of urgencydemonstrated by the Keppel teamcontinued through the course of theproject until the rig was repaired anddelivered,” Ashish wrote in a letter to thecompany.

To top it off, the repair works led byKeppel FELS Project SuperintendentFirdaus Rahim were completed three daysahead of schedule on 3 May 2008.

Ashish added, “Most notably, the focuson safety by everyone was trulycommendable and this ensured theproject was completed ahead of schedulewithout any lost time incidents.”

Solid progress at the yards

Amidst the buzz, Keppel FELS andKeppel Singmarine continue to celebratetheir achievements of project milestones.

The keel of Maersk Semi No. 3 was laid atKeppel FELS on 30 April. The proprietarydeepwater semisubmersible (semi) is the

third in a series of three built to the DSS21 design.

Maersk Jackup No. 4 had its keel laid soonafter on 2 May. The rig is the final of fourMSC CJ50 jackup rigs that Keppel FELSis constructing for Maersk Contractors.

Trident 15, a Modec 300 C-38 jackupdrilling rig set sail to owner Transoceanon 15 April. The rig came to Keppel FELSfor a periodic special survey, extensiverepairs, and upgrading works.

The first steel for the second of threeKFELS N Class jackup rigs Keppel FELSis building for Skeie Drilling andProduction was struck on 31 May.KFELS N Class rigs will be the largestjackups ever to be constructed inSingapore. They can also run drilling andproduction activities concurrently.

At Keppel Singmarine, H335 AnchorHandling Tug (AHT) had its keel laid on8 April. The 100-tonne bollard pulltugboat is a repeat order from SeawaysInternational, to whom Keppel deliveredthe first order, Seaways 12, in Novemberlast year.

Projects H341 and H342, both 93-metreplatform supply vessels (PSVs) forGreatship Offshore, struck their first steelon 1 April. The 4,600 dwt PSVs will befitted with diesel electric propulsion anddynamic positioning systems.

The “Safety Starts with Me” campaignfollows from Keppel Group’s first AnnualSafety Convention last October, whereKeppel Corporation and all its businessunits unanimously adopted “Five KeySafety Principles” underpinning theGroup’s approach to managing safetyissues.

“A safe and healthy work environment hasalways formed an important part ofKeppel’s care and concern for our staffwelfare. Indeed our safety work plan isalways an integral part of our continuedefforts to improve our operationalefficiency,” said Mr Lim.

Riding on the same theme as the nationalsafety campaign 2008, Keppel Groupaims to give its messages maximumimpact. At the same time, it strives tosupport Workplace Safety and Health(WSH) Council’s WSH 2015 vision tobecome an international centre ofexcellence for safety by fostering a safeand healthy work environment foreveryone and for Singapore.

The Guest-of-Honour, Acting Minister forManpower, Gan Kim Yong, said, “I amencouraged by Keppel’s initiatives because

Paving the way for the Group’s safetyjourney and success is Keppel Shipyardwith its large workforce. The yard’s SafetyExcellence 2010 programme aims to reachout to all employees as well assubcontractors through a series ofinitiatives and schemes over the next twoyears.

Major stakeholders includingExxonMobil Development Company(ExxonMobil), Shell InternationalExploration and Production, Single BuoyMoorings (SBM), and Prosafe Productionhave joined hands with Keppel Shipyardon this significant initiative.

For starters, they have pledged over a totalof $2 million to jumpstart various safetyschemes under the programme. The bulkof their sponsorships will support safetytraining for subcontractors who make upmore than two-thirds of the 14,000workers at Keppel Shipyard everyday.

“Keppel Shipyard firmly believes injoining hands with our clients andcontractors to provide safe, high qualityservices with a fast turnaround time,” saidNelson Yeo, Executive Director of KeppelShipyard.

He added, “As such, we want all ourcontractors to continue to join in thevarious training and developmentschemes under our Safety Excellence 2010programme. This will bring the yardcloser to its vision of an incident-freeworkplace.”

On top of the stakeholders’ pledge,Keppel O&M group has set aside$13 million in its 2008 safety budgetto promote and realise workplace safetyin its Singapore yards.

Keppel’s safety efforts did not gounnoticed.

Keppel Shipyard gets the ball rolling

More than 700 staffers, project and sectionmanagers, foremen, engineers, and contractorassociate heads took to heart the key messagesand goals expressed over two days duringKeppel Shipyard’s safety campaigns roll-out.

Keppel Shipyard’s team efforts have producedimpressive results so far. Its Accident FrequencyRate (AFR) fell from 3.48 in 2002 to 0.24 in2007, well surpassing the industry average.

Senior Machinery Fitter, Mohamed B Lamin hasworked with Keppel Shipyard for more than20 years.

Noticing the changes, he said, “In the last fewyears, the workers have really become moreaware of safety, making it part of their workprocesses. Checking the equipment expirydates, ensuring that the machines are workingproperly, and wearing the right safety gear havebecome routine. The mindset is there. We alsolook out for each other because everybodyrealises the importance of safety.”

However, the company’s commitment does notstop there. By the end of the two-year periodunder the Safety Excellence 2010 programme,the yard has set its sight on training and

“Hand injuries, Stop it, Everybody’sResponsibility” – that was Keppel FELSmessage to its employees, subcontractorsand customers at this year’s Health, Safetyand Environment (HSE) ExcellencePromotion Campaign.

At the campaign launch on 15 April 2008,CB Choo, Chairman & CEO of KeppelOffshore & Marine urged everyone to stayvigilant on safety issues.

“We are all committed to complete and

deliver projects to clients on time andwithin budget but this should not be areason for us to overlook safety,” he said.

He added, “We must continually strivetowards achieving Zero Accidents, ZeroLoss because every incident or every lifelost is one too many.”

The annual HSE Excellence PromotionCampaign aims to raise HSE awarenessin the shipyard. This year’s two-monthcampaign ended on 14 June focused onhand safety again because of how essentialthey are for work and in life.

Although looking after workers’ handswas hands down the main message at thecampaign launch, organisers made timeto showcase novel safety ideas.

During the launch, Safety InnovationTeam (SIT), Fusion, from the Pipingdepartment wowed audiences with asafer, more efficient flatbar fitting processfor leg jetting pipes fabrication.

The idea won Fusion a Silver Award at theAssociation for Singapore MarineIndustries’ 10th Workplace Safety andHealth Innovation Teams Convention formarine industry last year.

Watching his colleagues go home safe andsound after each work day is reward

enough for Keppel FELS Health, Safety andEnvironment (HSE) Officer Isaac Yeo, who hasa tall task at hand.

Isaac and his peers aspire to create a safetyculture in Keppel FELS where everyone takesownership for their own safety, as well as forthose around them.

But the 27-year-old Keppelite knew what hewas getting into, even as an undergraduatestudent when he decided on his life vocation.Back then, an industrial attachment with anenvironmental consultancy firm inspired himto pursue a career in health and safety.

So Isaac indicated right from the start that heeventually want to join the Health Safety andEnvironment (HSE) team when he applied tobe a management trainee with Keppel FELS.

A year and a half on, Isaac holds a SpecialistDiploma in Workplace Safety and Health underthe Professionals Workforce SkillsQualifications (WSQ) programme, a jointcollaboration between the Singapore WorkforceDevelopment Agency (WDA) and theWorkplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council.

Isaac was the only Keppelite and theyoungest among the first batch of 52 traineeswho had benefited from the revamped WSQframework, which aims to develop WSHprofessionals who will champion safetyimprovements within their own companiesand industries.

However, Isaac is still at least six monthsshy of turning legitimate because it is nowalk in the park to become a RegisteredWorkplace Safety and Health Officer(WSHO).

Besides successfully completing the WSQcourse, trainees have to pull in at least twoyears of relevant job experience before he/she can apply for the official accreditation.

Despite the demanding task of balancingwork and training, Isaac finds solace inexploring safety issues from a strategic level.

“As a HSE officer, I am able to have anoverview of all the different operationsinvolved in building an oil rig, as opposedto focusing on any aspect,” he said.

Still, the HSE officer and his colleagues findunique safety management challenges in theoffshore and marine industry.

The sheer task of managing an average ofsome 500 workers on each rig means thatIsaac and his peer supervisors have to pickup people management skills on the fly andin double quick time. Throw a kaleidoscopeof countries and cultural backgrounds intothe mix, and Isaac’s safety messages riskgetting lost in translation.

Nonetheless, the passionate health andsafety champion remains unfazed. Livingand breathing safety issues everyday, Isaacsay he cannot help but see good and badsafety procedures wherever he goes, evenwhen he is not working.

Keppelites graduated under theASMI Super V scheme, a job re-17 creation and training programme

on 22 May 2008. The scheme is tailored forlocals with no relevant marine skills, but whoare keen to pursue supervisory careers in theindustry.

Jointly created by the Association of SingaporeMarine Industries (ASMI), the National TradesUnion Congress (NTUC) and SingaporeWorkforce Development Agency (WDA), theinitiative also aims to provide structuredtraining for Singaporeans with secondaryeducation in order to qualify them under theNational ITE Certificate (NITEC).

Super V sizing skills and careers

Among the 17 proud graduates, eight have beenpromoted to full-fledge Trainee Supervisors. Todo so, the workers must complete a progressivetwo-year training course that gears them up forone of five key marine core training tracks –Marine Electrical Technology, Marine SteelFitting, Marine Pipe Fitting, Marine Mechanicsand Marine General Welding.

Keppel O&M has been actively recruiting forthe Super V programme since its launch inNovember 2005. It is also involved in thenewly-launched Super V2 scheme that targetsITE graduates in non-marine or Higher NITECtracks.

With a father who used to work in the marineindustry, Shaun Foo Yong Chiang was nostranger to the trade. He responded to anadvertisement calling for trainee supervisorsunder the ASMI Super V scheme in February2006.

Coming from a background in service, theswitch to an industrial sector has broughtShaun his fair share of challenges. Now TraineeSupervisor at Keppel Shipyard’s hulldepartment, the Super V graduate said he haslearned to enjoy rolling with the punches.

“I have learnt a great deal though the Super Vprogramme and am proud to have completedthe NITEC training in Marine Steel FabricationTechnology (Hull & Structure) Course. I am

A fascination with ships led Muhammed HafizBin Ahmad to sign up for a course to become atrainee supervisor under the ASMI SUPER Vscheme.

Two years after making it to his desired MarineElectrical Technology track, Hafiz has becomeKeppel Shipyard’s full-fledge Trainee Supervisorresponsible for repairing and overhauling shipmotors.

Not one to consider himself a hands-on person,Hafiz said, “However, thanks to practicaltraining in the workshops and constant hands-on training on the job, I’ve managed toovercome this obstacle.”

To get to where he is today, the fresh supervisorhad to pass the Skills Evaluation Test (SET)Levels 1 and 2, as well as attain the NITEC inMarine Electrical Engineering.

K eppel Scholar Gerard Limrealised a life-long dream towork while studying overseas as

part of his undergraduate studies at theNational University of Singapore (NUS)Overseas Colleges (NOC) programme. Herecounted the year leading up to July2007, where he lived in the United States,thanks to Keppel O&M’s sponsorship.

He said, “Going overseas expanded myhorizons and exposed me to differentideas and greater challenges. I gained somuch more enriching ‘real-life’ lessonsthan if I had just spent half a year studyingabroad, which is the norm for NUSstudents.”

The entrepreneurship-focused NOCprogramme immerses students in theworld of business by hooking them upwith start-up companies in variousestablished industry communitiesworldwide.

Gerard said, “I was lucky to be sent toPhiladelphia, which is home to a hotbedof industries such as biomedical andinformation technologies. I had the

privilege of working alongside some verydynamic individuals in an IT consultingfirm.”

Although living abroad poses someunique challenges, Gerard took them inhis stride. He said, “Working in a foreignenvironment with no Asians around mewas a challenge. But I took the initiativeto interact with my co-workers. Looking

back now, I believe I made many goodfriends.”

Indeed, the Keppel Scholar mixedbusiness with pleasure, establishing theSingapore Philadelphia InnovatorsNetwork (SPIN) with his peers. He saidSPIN served as an excellent springboardto get to know many entrepreneurs andbusinessmen.

Looking ahead, the young entrepreneuris determined to make even more out ofhis knowledge gained.

“I am looking forward to familiarisingmyself with business operations in theshipyard and be an asset to the company.Although many of the business conceptsare more applicable to start-up firms,some can be made relevant to largercompanies like Keppel,” Gerard said.

All of that, he added, is with the aim ofkeeping Keppel O&M’s lead in theoffshore and marine industry.

K eppelites from FSTP Brasilhave been facing off withunderprivileged youths on their

home turf every quarter since April 2006.They pit their skills in football – a prizedtalent and national obsession for manyBrazilians.

But the stakes are getting higher as FSTPBrasil, the 75/25 consortium owned byKeppel Offshore & Marine and the Frenchcompany, Technip, aims to do more.

The group wants to raise furtherawareness and funding for the youthfootball players, who train under theCentro Social Montreal Esportivo do Rioproject. The project diverts the youths,many of whom are involved in criminalactivities, from favelas* or shanty townsin Rio de Janeiro.

So far, FSTP Brasil has raised enoughfunds to buy over the school premises atthe favela, Duque Furquim.

The team also has managed to rope incolleagues from partner agencies such asKeppel FELS, BrasFELS, and Technip, as

well as friends from businesscounterparts, El Paso, Chevron, Datamar,and Smith International, to join theirvolunteering.

However, it is not all play and no workfor the football fans. The FSTP teamexpanded their activities in 2007,bringing their expertise as facilitators andspeakers to educate the youths in an eight-week life skills programme.

The friendly competitors also get togetherto indulge in family traditions. Theycelebrated last Christmas together withthe usual festivities spiced up with a twist.Instead of stuffed stockings, each youthreceived a backpack filled with schoolbooks and goodies.

What started out as a simple fundraisingvolunteer activity for FSTP Brasil staff andfamily members to socialise outside theworkplace, has turned into a gift offriendship and vision – to dare to dreambigger dreams for the Brazilian youths.

Playing for life

Local clergyman Pastor JustinoRibeiro Gomes founded the CentroSocial Montreal Esportivo do Riofootball project to engage youthsfrom the favela, Cidade de Deus.

He wanted to give them anotheroutlet for self-expression bydeveloping their football skills.

Legend has it that a young boyeven surrendered his gun for anopportunity to turn over a new leafand train with Pastor Justino’sfootball team.

A force to be reckoned with, thepastor himself played for one ofRio’s best football clubs, Flamengo,in his youth. He was responsiblefor training many of the youngmen now playing for some of thebest football clubs in the country.

That is why Keppel FELS in April simulated anexplosion, while Keppel Batangas Shipyardsimulated an Avian flu pandemic to test andfine-tune their crisis response systems.

A mock explosion at Keppel FELS’ pump roomgot every staff member pulling out all stopsduring a BCM exercise – the sixth in the lastfour years.

They tried to get quicker response from theircounterparts at sister yards and security staffwere provided with metal detectors and under-carriage mirrors to prevent further disruptions.

Keeping emergency preparednessin check

Yard Manager of Keppel FELS, Richard Tay said,“The exercise helps the yard to test all aroundthe effectiveness of our Health, Safety andEnvironment procedures, making sure we arewell prepared during emergencies.”

Already, Keppel FELS prepares for emergenciesby recalling staff during the weekends and atlate hours on a regular basis.

However, it wanted to test the yard’s readinessand coordination with external agencies suchas the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF)and the Police who support Keppel’s effortsduring emergencies.

Coordinating officer Staff Sergeant Phua said,“Coordination between the firefighters and thecontrol centre was very good. The exerciseimproved the teamwork between Keppel andSCDF. But more importantly, it trained our teamto handle crises in a shipyard, which is notsomething we see everyday.”

Meeting bird flu at a safe distance

Over in the Philippines on 15 April, an Avianflu pandemic was enacted at Keppel Batangasyard. Everybody, including subcontractors andvisitors, had their temperatures taken by themonitoring and response team.

“The exercise lets us see and understand howwell and timely everybody reacts to a similarsituation. This helps to protect all our safetyand well-being,” said Kok Boon Heng, Presidentof Keppel Batangas.

“The exercises are not just about physical preparationbut also coordination and planning. The simulation ismeant to be as real as possible so everyone can bementally prepared, and all the details can be ironed outduring execution.”Anthony Toh, Keppel O&M’s Group Senior Manager of Security

All participants overcame their initialapprehension after the objective andsignificance of the exercise have been explained.

K eppel Singmarine has secured two contracts,a derrick pipelay vessel and a Multi-Functional Support Vessel (MFSV), from

valued customers, Global Offshore International Ltd(Global Offshore) and Lewek Shipping Pte Ltd (LewekShipping).

Hoe Eng Hock, ED of Keppel Singmarine, said,“Demand for offshore support vessels remains strong,with customers now making enquiries for larger andmore powerful ships. We are pleased that ourcustomers continue to entrust us with construction ofthe sophisticated vessels.”

Due for delivery in the second quarter of 2011, thederrick pipelay vessel is a multi-purpose constructionvessel that can accommodate up to 264 persons. Itwill be equipped with two propulsion thrusters, sixpositioning thrusters, four power generators, aDynamic Positioning System 2 and an integrationpipelay equipment.

The second contract for a 100-metre Rolls-Roycedesigned UT 788 CDL ultra-deepwater MFSV isscheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2010.
