MDGs Nigeria – Putting People First
ENUGU STATE
THROUGH THE OSSAP- MDGs CONDITIONAL GRANT SCHEME (2011-2013)
1. Now that there is a leverage of resources that are available, the people can now meet the other basic needs of their family. There is also increased access to health care facilities now and people don’t have to travel long distances to access health care delivery.- Dr. Moses Obiefuna Otiji (Permanent Secretary State Ministry of Health)
2. The MDGs are a welcome development especially due to the fact that it helps to reduce the pressure on the local government in the area of provision of developmental projects in different areas. Initially, in the area of health, people had to travel several miles to get medical care but now it’s closer to them. Also, they have regular access to good, clean and potable water and also better educational system infrastructures.- Engr. Festus Ozoemena (Local Government Chairman, Igbo Etiti LGA)
3. Before MDGS came, we just had one hall and we also managed a church building where all of our pupils were put together. They gave us twenty five (25)seats, six (6) tables, six (6) chairs for the teachers, one (1) first aid box and two (2) chalk boards, in addition to the renovation of the classrooms. The students now have a better environment to read and they are now placed in their respective classes, making learning easier for themselves. Everyone is involved in maintaining the school, we have a senior prefect who is in charge overall and each class also has a prefect.
Also, the teachers are directly involved in its maintenance.- Agujiobi Theresa Uche (Deputy Director, Unity Primary School, Amanefi Ukehe, Igbo
Etiti LGA)
4. Previously, we had just had two apartments with two doors, one for the senior classes and the other for the junior classes. It was always difficult to concentrate because it was always very noisy. Now, it’s marvelous, our classes are now separated and school activities are going on fine. Learning is comfortable now. Each teacher had a class to himself/herself and whatever is kept in the room will be intact. We are very happy.- Nwodo Grace N (Assistant Head Mistress, Community Primary School, Idoha, Igbo Etiti
LGA)
5. Our situation was very bad, to the extent that the teachers and students make use of the bush whenever they were pressed because we didn’t have latrines. MDGs renovated the school building, gave us water and built toilets for us. The students are happy. In fact, we are all very happy; the teachers and the headmistress too.- Ojike Juliana N (Class Teacher, Diewa Primary School, Diewa, Igbo Etiti LGA)
6. The villagers came together to put up a structure but insufficient funding did not let them complete it. It was without windows and doors. MDGs came to renovate the health center, gave us drugs and some other medical equipment. After the intervention of the MDGs, we now have so many patients coming in for treatment. - Awallawa Veronica (Officer in Charge, Onueme PHC, Onueme, Isi-Uzo LGA)
