‘Dutch Courage’
Some of us will remember that ‘Courage’ was the name of a brewery, long since gone, whose trade mark was a cockerel. It should not be confused with ‘Dutch Courage’, which is nothing to do with Dutch people but is a form of gin invented by a Dutch doctor as a diuretic. During the Thirty Years War English soldiers took a tipple or two of this gin before going into battle in the Netherlands, hence the name.
Those of us who watched the participants in last year’s Olympics, or Andy Murray win Wimbledon this year, will recognise another form of courage - able-bodied and disabled athletes not only competing against others but their own bodies to win a prize.
Some of you living locally will have known the late Peggy Willson whose life radiated another form of courage. Blind from the age of 2, for 87 years Peggy courageously embraced life to the full. Married to George, and mother of Esme, she became a competent organist, a regular concert-goer, an avid reader and a member of the University of the Third Age. She cooked, cleaned, did the washing, the ironing and ‘watched’ football, rugby and a variety of sport via the radio and TV. A committed Christian, Peggy was full of praise and gratitude for her family, friends, neighbours and church and she had immense courage.
Recently, I heard of a little boy, Mark aged 10, who has had to have a leg amputated. This little boy will need great courage in the years to come. There are so many unsung heroes like Peggy and Mark amongst us who daily grapple with the trials and tribulations of life. Courage is a spiritual quality, an attitude of heart and mind that we all need to draw upon during times of adversity.
When that great Old Testament biblical character Moses died God chose Joshua to lead the Hebrew people into the Promised Land. Joshua was fearful and had no idea what lay before him but God said to him: “Joshua, be strong and of good courage!” (Joshua 1:7)
Whatever crises or difficulties you may be facing, don't hide or run. Face your ‘enemy’ - be strong and of good courage. Add to this a prayer and ask God to strengthen you for the task you face.
Christian greetings,

Editorial
Welcome to the August edition of the ‘Link’.
Many of our summer events this year have been blessed by sunshine. Feature articles this month include reports of Sherfest (Sherfield Park’s first annual summer festival), Hartley Wespall’s Gardens Open Day, and the new footbridge at Stratfield Turgis. Thanks to Ian Goodall for the lovely photographs of Sherfield Fete in the July issue, and also to Mike Abrams for the final article in the ‘Death by musical misadventure’ - apologies for not crediting them. We are always looking for good pictures for the Link, especially for the cover. It is particularly useful to have cover photographs in portrait format. As always comments, criticisms, etc.to editor@loddonvalleylink. hampshire.org.uk

TEXT FOR THE MONTH
Psalm 121 : 1-4 The NIV Bible I lift up my eyes to the mountains - where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip - he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
Prayer for the Month. Loving God, we thank you for this time of rest and holiday and the opportunities it brings to enjoy time with families and friends and the beauty of the world, and to meet new people. We praise you that there is so much for which we can give you thanks, so much that is good and brings us pleasure and rejoicing. We praise you for blessing us and helping us to celebrate life in all its fullness. Forgive us that we sometimes fail to count our blessings, letting familiarity blind us to all that you provide for us. Forgive us for constantly expecting more instead of appreciating what we have, and for wasting our inheritance rather than using it wisely. Forgive us, Lord, for the poverty of our response to your great goodness. Lord of all, assure us once more of your loving mercy and continuing love. Teach us to accept everything you provide for us with heart-felt gratitude, expressed in our words and daily living. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Prayer Points for August Pray for all children who are away at Christian camps and for those who have given their time as leaders. Pray for all the children and their families who live in our villages, that they may enjoy the holiday period and have safe journeys when they are travelling. Give thanks for the sunshine we have enjoyed in this last month. Pray for a successful harvest time. Pray for our own country in a world so full of anxieties and worries, in which we are uncertain of the future and the way forward. Pray for peace in Afghanistan, Syria, Egypt and in all countries where violence and terror cause so many to live in fear each day. Pray for solutions to the problems facing the leaders of these countries, and for all world leaders seeking to find answers to the many difficulties that these countries are experiencing.

Evergreens Club reported by May Wilkie
Our July meeting was a very interesting and enjoyable talk by Heather Chandler abour her work as a volunteer for the RSPCA. Heather is involved with rehoming the animals. Before being rehomed the animals are microchipped, given flea and worming treatment and in some cases are also vaccinated. She talked about the various circumstances in which the animals are brought to the RSPCA. Heather also showed us a film about a cat who became famous world wide called Ernest. Sadly he has now passed away, but he lived with the RSPCA at their centre on the Isle of Wight. He developed an eye condition and treatment was either surgery or contact lenses. As Ernest was 15 years old it was decided to give him contact lenses. These were the same as those given to humans and looked after in the same way. The lenses were supplied by Specsavers, a first for them. Because he was the only cat to have contact lenses, he became famous not only in the local paper and the Daily Mail but also worldwide, as far away as New Zealand,
The meeting concluded with tea and a raffle,
The next meeting on Aug 5th will be a river cruise to Windsor.
We are looking for new members and if anyone is interested we meet on the first Monday of every month from 1.30pm to 3.45pm, except on bank holidays when it is the following week. Why not come along as a visitor and give us a try?

Our first annual summer festival was held on the 6th July, aptly named Sherfest. The weather was absolutely glorious and the turn out was phenomenal. It was great to see so many people there from our neighbouring villages too, the atmosphere was incredible.
We had far more people than anticipated, so all our volunteers were kept very busy on the bar, bbq and children's activities. We even had a visit from some very familiar faces from Children's TV!
Page 29
The bands also went down a storm. All our bands were local and played free of charge. They were all amazing, very talented and really added to the festival feel. A huge thank you to all of our volunteers, stall holders & band members for all their hard work and a HUGE thank you to everyone who came along and made it an extra special day! All in all a fantastic way to celebrate being part of a real Community.

Children’s Holiday Art Workshops at
Sherfield on Loddon
Local artist Louise Hight will be holding weekly children’s Art workshops at The Liddell Hall on Wednesdays throughout the school holidays. Having worked for the commercial and fine art industries for over 30 years, Louise trained as a teacher and worked as Head of Art at Daneshill Preparatory School, before setting up after school art classes for children in the local area.
Louise is offering a large variety of workshops for children aged 5 to 11. They include T-shirt painting, mask making, print workshop, multi-media design, mosaic, wall hangings and Tudor portrait painting. All materials and aprons are supplied and the classes run from 10am to 3pm. The children can attend a morning or afternoon session or bring a packed lunch and stay all day.
The classes offer a fun, friendly and creative environment for all abilities, where children have the opportunity to explore their creativity under supportive guidance. Demonstrations and one to one tuition form the basis for learning techniques and the children will then be
encouraged to experiment and develop their personal artwork.

Report by Gill Fearon
NWR Report
Our recent meeting was entitled ‘Castaway’, a light-hearted topic for a warm summer’s evening. We modelled the format loosely on ‘Desert Island Discs’, but omitted the music. We therefore chose a book (apart from the Bible and Shakespeare), a practical item and a luxury item. We could also choose the sort of island we’d be marooned on, - desert, tropical, temperate etc. For books we mostly decided on sets or complete works so that there would be plenty to keep us busy. Two of us chose the complete works of Dickens and others selected great tomes like ‘War and Peace’, the ‘Barchester Chronicles’ and the Poldark series of books by Winston Graham. Others went for non-fiction such as a world atlas and a book on flora and fauna or something to keep the brain ticking over in the form of a puzzle book.
Our practical items included a sharp knife, a Swiss army knife, matches, wind-up torch and a packet of seeds. On the luxury front we chose an umbrella/parasol, soap, hand and face cream (with a sun protection factor!), a cross-stitch picture of a former house to sew complete with all the necessary tools, a cat, a digital camera with solar power, small binoculars and snorkelling equipment.
As we had time, we then talked about our lives such as where we were born, schools/universities attended, how we met our partners and how we came to live in Sherfield-on-Loddon. As always, there was lots of lively discussion.
Our next meeting will be a discussion on the book we have all been reading, ‘Hunting Midnight’ by Richard Zimler.
