Im giving up whisky for Lent

But you dont drink whisky, replied my wife. Thatswhy Im giving it up! Were in that period known asLent...pancakes, Ash Wednesday, Mothers Day, HotCross Buns, Good Friday, Easter Eggs and all thatstuff. Where did it all come from?

Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day or Mardi Gras (fatTuesday to the French) marks the eve of AshWednesday, the beginning of Lent, during which you werent meant toindulge yourself, so pancakes were a last chance to blow out beforeLent. The word shrove comes from the word shrive meaning toconfess and so people would confess their sins to the priest, theywould then be shriven in readiness for Lent.

Youll often hear people talk about giving things up for Lent, to loseweight or drink less. Lent itself is the 40 days from Ash Wednesdayleading up to Easter Day and is taken from the story in the Bible ofJesus being tempted in the desert for 40 days before he began hisministry. During this period Christians would do something different todeepen their faith e.g. pray more regularly or give more time tostudying the Bible. Its a time for spiritual growth rather than dieting!

Mothering Sunday was the Sunday mid-way through Lent when strict

abstinence was relaxed. In days gone by girls in service wereallowed, by the more generous masters and mistresses, a day off tovisit their mothers. Today, like so many things, its become anotherday in the commercial calendar when the price of flowers rocketsbecause children want to buy their mothers a gift.

Good Friday marks the day on which Jesus died on a cross andbecause he gave his life in love for us to open the way to God, we callit good Friday. Hot cross buns used to be eaten only on this day to

celebrate this event. Now you can buy them all year round.

The word Easter comes from the Anglo Saxon word Eostre, the nameof the pagan goddess of spring, given new meaning as peoplebecame Christians a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.

The Christian calendar is about a journey: from Jesus birth to hisdeath and resurrection and it reminds us that we are all passingthrough this life on our journey. Many have gone before us and manywill follow. The good news is that we have a Father in heaven who

wants to take our hand on this journey and lead us home.

    Christian greetings,

    Revd. Bob Politt

    From Sheena Archer.

I recently received this enquiry from Julie Irwin:

"My late father told me that he was taken toa hospital in your area

after suffering injuries in Palestine in 1947. He talked about the village(Sherfield on Loddon) and also Stratfield Saye House,

I believe thathe was sent somewhere in the area for rehabilitation. Itis a long shot, but do you know of any establishments in your area, commonly known for looking after wounded soldiers at this time."

If you know of local buildings that were used as temporary hospitalsplease let me know and I will pass the information to Julie.

Sheena Archer 01256 882099 [email protected] Thank you for your help.

Biffaward funding comes to Stratfield Turgis

Plans to improve facilities on the recreationground at Stratfield Turgis have beenboosted by a grant from Biffaward, a multi-million pound environment fund managedby the Royal Society of Wildlife Trustswhich uses landfill tax credits donated byBiffa Waste Services.

Stratfield Turgis Parish Meeting made the successfulapplication for funding through Biffawards Small GrantsScheme, introduced to enable groups to access lowerlevels of funding in order to improve the quality of life intheir community. The grant has enabled the slide to be fullyrefurbished with additional new safety surfacing to meet health andsafety requirements.

A representative from Biffaward, Gillian French, Programme Manager ,said Biffaward is delighted to support this project, which has been ledby local residents. Outdoor spaces are incredibly important; theimproved area will be a fun, stimulating and engaging place wherechildren and their parents can meet and socialise.

Update from Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish CouncilNew cemeteryThe parish council would like to take this opportunity toadvise residents that the extension to the existing burial

ground in St Leonards Church is now open for burials.Although the new cemetery is accessed via a gate fromthe existing site, it is under the ownership and management of theparish council. The ground is unconsecrated and totally secular soable to welcome those from all faiths together with those who holdno particular belief. The cemetery has a lawned section for burialswhere a headstone may be erected and also a woodland sectionwhere memorials are not permitted but which will be planted with

trees to create a natural environment. Separating these two areas isa wild flower meadow. Over the years, the parish council intends toprovide more soft and hard landscaping including a memorialgarden to provide a place of quiet reflection for relatives. The parishcouncil believes in offering as much choice as possible to thebereaved and has attempted to keep regulations to a minimum butsome are necessary to ensure that the cemetery is a safe and fitting

place for all those who visit and work in it. A full list of theregulations and fees may be obtained from the parish clerk orviewed online at www.sherfieldonloddon-pc.gov.uk.Hitting the Cold SpotsHampshire County Council has launched its Hitting the Cold Spotsinitiative which is aimed at preventing vulnerable people sufferingfrom the impact of cold weather. Once formallyadopted, this framework will be one of the key factors in planningapplications. The main document in this framework is the CoreStrategy. This planning document identifies where development will

take place, how new jobs will be supported and how the environmentof the Borough will be protected and enhanced. It also allocates major

The Manydown Company (MDC) has been granted an expedited

Judicial Review (JR) hearing on March 13/14. This challenges thelegality of the Councils Core Strategy. It is separate from SOLVE andCountryWatch; we have held back on our JR, to avoid duplication. Ifsuccessful this could halt the Councils preparation of the CoreStrategy forcing them to make 2000 acres of taxpayers land,Manydown, available for development.Your Councillors support the exclusion of Manydown and 2300 extrahouses around their wards: re - letter 26

Gazette. More letters and articles followed including a reply fromSOLVE. Ask your Borough Councillor why he has, in effect, chosen todump 2300 houses on your doorstep.Despite the JR, the consultation period on the draft Core Strategy, without Manydown, began on 10th February and ends on 23rd March -see the Council website.Visit our website www.solveloddon.org follow us on Twitter:@SOLVE2010. sites and locations for development to meet the needs of our growingpopulation. We have worked hard to ensure that Sherfield village itself does notneed to build any new homes between now and 2027. In addition, wehave campaigned to bring the number of homes to be built each yeardown from 945 to 594 protecting as many greenfield sites aspossible. You can support these approaches in the consultation that isnow open and will last until 23rd March 2012.Visit the Borough Councilwebsite at: www.basingstoke.gov.uk/go/corestrategy However, there is a need to have some development on the peripheryof the Town including Redlands, on the Parish boundary, to be part

of a development adjacent to Chineham. We have lobbied to ensurethat policies are in place to prevent any further encroachment ofhousing beyond this site, but there is still more to do. We want toensure that only the right policies are included in the LDF and, forthat, we need your help. If you would like to feed in to this process, please email us directly at the address below. One other word on the lips of some residents is Manydown. What isit and what is happening? Manydown is an expanse of land to the

west of Basingstoke, which is currently leased jointly to the Boroughand County Councils by The Manydown Company (TMC), a privateinterest. TMC launched a Judicial Review against the Councilregarding its decisions not to promote their land for development inthis LDF. Contrary to some reports, the Council has made clear that itwill be looking at the Manydown land with full scoping and consultationto be carried out, but this takes time. However, TMC were seeking astay to prevent the Council from publishing the pre-submission CoreStrategy for consultation. On 8

    thFebruary the High Court dismissed

the application for a stay but agreed, in line with normal process, thatthe Judicial Review hearing would still be heard in March. If progress on the Core Strategy is delayed, then there could beadverse consequences for the Borough as a whole includingSherfield. Without a LDF in place, developers will be able to put inplanning applications for sites without the Council having any strategiccontrol of the phasing and so on. People seeking to stall the processshould think very carefully about the potential impact of their actions.

Mines a pint by Simon Boase

Continuing the occasional theme of featuringlocal enterprises, I visited the recently formedSherfield Village Brewery at the invitation of

Peter Cook (its a tough job ).

Sherfield Village Brewery started life in May2011 at Goddards Farm, following acouple of months building and fitting out. Itsan ideal location for brewing as the spent mash isrecycled directly to the happy cows.

As Pete explained, beer making is simplebut the final result is dependent on a fewgood ingredients and lots of care. Petesspeciality is the use of New World hopswhich give his beers their distinctive flavours, with the hops being added both early and latein the brewing process.

I spent a very pleasant hour in Pete's companysampling the latest brews: Delicious chocolaty stout,

excellent Hoppy Harrington (my favourite), and the Threesomebitter (but still not sure how I'd ask for that). If you get chance to try Ican thoroughly recommend them all. Just listening to Pete talk abouthis passion and smelling the different hops is a great experience.

Join Clift Surgerys Patient Representative Group(PRG)

This article is about a newNHS initiative, the PatientParticipation Directed Enhanced Service (DES). This is a

programme to enhance surgery services according to thespecific needs and make-up of the patients in the Practice. Forexample they may include:

hours of opening and the ability to book ahead

range of skills available access to different professionals

a choice of modes of contact e.g. face-to-face, phone orelectronic contact

enabling care as close to home as possible

An important condition is that the practice will only qualify forfunding under this scheme if it is able to clearly demonstrate thatit has established a Patients Representative Group (PRG)comprising registered patients and has used its best endeavoursto ensure that the PRG is representative of its patientcommunity.

If you would like to support this initiative, please email CliftSurgery at [email protected] your name, your housenumber/name and postcode and put Wish to Join PRG in thesubject line. The surgery will acknowledge your request, butthen you will not hear anything until the first topic for consultationis distributed. Your email address will be secure and will not bepassed to any other party nor will it appear in the distribution ofthe consultation request emails. Note that in a previous LVLarticle in September 2011, a PCG (Patient Consultative Group)was described, but this initiative has now been superseded bythe PRG. Patients who have already registered for the PCG willbe transferred to the list for the PRG and do not need to reapply.

MAIN HALL KITCHEN & GARDEN ROOMThe Main Hall kitchen and Garden Room bar are being united as thehatch between them is being converted into a doorway. More storagewill be created in the bar area, which is necessary as the Hall nowruns its own bar at Village Hall events and needs to store numerous

    drinks and glasses.

The commercial dishwasher purchased recentlywill be installed in the bar area, a commercial range cooker will bepurchased for the kitchen and there will also be space for a tallfridge. The current small fridge in the kitchen will be replaced by thenewer one in the Garden Room. When building work is completed, anindustrial non-slip vinyl will be laid in the kitchen and bar area and theGarden Room carpet will be replaced with the same wood effect vinylas in the Liddell Hall.

CLEANINGJust before Christmas, the Village Hall was the subject of a deep cleanwhich included cleaning the ceiling fans in the main hall and all toilets.

GARDENRubbish and nettles have been cleared, some levelling and seedingcompleted and some new concrete paths laid. More work is plannedfor the Spring which will include a garden area for Happy Facesplaygroup to cultivate.

FUNDRAISINGAs a Charity, the only regular income the Hall has is from its hiringfees so donations and fund raising events are vital to maintain the Halland carry out further renovation and refurbishments. Report by Gill Fearon

As 2012 sees the UK hosting the Olympics, our theme for this year isTaking the Challenge and we are encouraged to take on challenges

ourselves. Perhaps learn to do something we have been delaying ortake up a new hobby or sport. To reflect our theme we have planned ameeting to discuss women who have faced challenges and how theyhave overcome them. As this year is also the Queens DiamondJubilee, we have arranged a meeting entitled Aspects of Diamondsand also a debate on the future of the monarchy. Our country themeevening will be Greece, again to reflect the year of the Olympics. Wehave also planned our usual events such as our evening ramble,Safari Supper, Telephone Quiz and Christmas meal as well as a play

reading, music evening and book review.

Our February meeting was Guess Whos Coming to Dinner? wherewe all chose three dinner guests and had to explain why we chosethem and what we talked about. They could be people who were deador fictional. People in the media were a popular choice after all theywould have plenty to talk about! Sir David Attenborough was chosenfor his knowledge and enthusiasm, Alastair Cook for his expertise on

the USA and Julian Pettifer for his experience as a war reporter andmore recently his interest in nature. Other media folk included JohnPeel for his support of new musical talent, Sarah Kennedy for herwarm personality, Ian Hislop (chosen twice) for his humour andknowledge of current affairs, and Michael Portillo for his engagingpersonality in presenting a series of train journeys. One bravemember would ask Michel Roux Jnr to dinner! Sailors and adventurersFrancis Chichester and Ellen McArthur would have fantastic stories to

    tell of their round-

    the-

word voyages and what inspired them to do it.Richard Burton was chosen for his lovely voice and Sir John Betjemanfor his beautiful poetry. An interesting combination of guests would beSt Peter, Abu Bakr and Ananda discussing Jesus, Mohammed andBuddha. For humour Pam Ayres and Dawn French would be given aninvitation to dinner and for professionalism and dedication, BettyBoothroyd. This is just a sample of people we would invite and it led tosome interesting discussions on the various achievements andpersonalities of those chosen. Our next meeting will be our Greek evening when we will all bringsome Greek food, do a quiz on Greece and listen to some Greekmusic.
