Editorial
Welcome to the Spring Edition of the Loddon Valley Link. We are keen to reflect the news and views of the whole community - Churches, villages, clubs
and societies within our distribution area.
As you will know, from the last Link, we have been running our biannual envelope scheme to help
cover the costs of producing the Loddon Valley Link.
We are very grateful for your donations which help us to distribute the magazine to 2,000 homes in the villages. This is our last call for support and further
details can be found on page 49.
In this edition you will find an update of the building work in progress to add important additional facilities to St. Leonard’s church. In the course of excavations inevitably some old bones were dug up and these were reburied in a moving
ceremony (Page 4)
We’ve given a big splash this month to the annual Hartley Wespall Regatta (See page 29) - sounds a crazy idea but really good fun bringing us all together. Do go and take part if you can (but take a
‘cosie’ just in case!)
Finally, we are always looking for interesting articles for the magazine. With all the remembrance events this year, perhaps some of you have
a story or two to tell?
As ever, comments are welcomed. Contact the editor at: [email protected] Our thanks to Sheena Archer for supplying the cover page photo of the ceremony at the Garden of Remembrance at St. Leonard’s (see page 28 for more details).

A fun informal service held outside on the green, for the whole family. We will be using the fete marquee in case the

Tadley Concert Brass will once again be providing the
music for us.
Re-interment of
Ancient Bones
During the digging of the foundations for St. Leonard’s Church extension, ancient churchyard burials revealed some, now anonymous, bones that had long lost
their identity and headstones.
On Palm Sunday, 13th April 2014, Revd. Sammie Armstrong, in the presence of a large congregation, re-interred the bones in the Church burial ground, saying that it is central to Christian belief that a human body, at the point of death, ceases to have any importance for the resurrected life of the individual. However, it is equally important that we accord great dignity and care to the dead for in so doing, we signify the deeper funda-
mental attitudes of the living.
Gathering to care for the dead demonstrates that we value life.

“Pastoral Letter”
‘What’s happening about Bob’s successor?’ It is a question I get asked frequently. It is now five months since Bob left so where are we?
On Monday, 24th March we had a meeting of the PCC’s to appoint representatives to sit on the
appointments committee to choose a new priest in charge. Richard Elphick had done a wonderful job in completing a Parish Profile, which had been approved by the Archdeacon of
Winchester and the Bishop of Basingstoke, the latter having now moved on to become Bishop of Bath and Wells.
The Parochial Church Councils (PCC’s) of St.Leonard’s, Sherfield on
Loddon, St. Mary’s Stratfield Saye and Hartley Wespall with Stratfield Turgis and St James’ Bramley with St. Stephen’s Little
London, met at Cross House in Bramley to approve the Parish profile and select the
representatives.
The Archdeacon explained the process, answered questions and then left. Each PCC
met separately and then returned to the main hall, where they all approved the Profile with some minor alterations to the
wording and announced who would be their representatives.
An advertisement will be written and placed in the appropriate places at the end of April and the first week of May, with a closing date of application on 22nd May. A short list will be drawn up and
interviews will be held on 23rd and 24th June. Depending on the notice the appointee needs to give, we hope to have a new Priest-in-Charge by October.
We all need to pray that God’s person will be appointed.
John

TEXT FOR THE MONTH… 1 Thessalonians 3 : 14 The NIV Bible
13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in
the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.
Prayer for the Month.
Lord Jesus Christ, after the joy of Easter, this month we will celebrate your ascension to heaven and we thank you that you came to save not just a few, nor simply your own people but all the world.
You are King of kings and Lord of lords, your love reaching out to the ends of the earth, your glory filling the universe. We greet you now as the
sovereign Lord - the one who reigns in splendour, enthroned at the right hand of the Father, and the one who, in the fullness of time, will reconcile all things to yourself making peace through your blood and establishing
your eternal kingdom. Saviour of all, we look forward to the day when every knee shall bow to you and every tongue confess you as Lord and Saviour.
Mighty saviour, in thanks we worship you.
In Jesus name we pray. Amen

Neighbourhood Plan – Questionnaire Campaign
Many thanks to those parish residents who completed and submitted a questionnaire. This questionnaire campaign is now closed and the results are being entered into a database for analysis.
We have received 400 completed questionnaires from all sources. Of
those, 70 were from the Sherfield Park Community Centre, 205 were submitted from the village and the
rest, 125, were completed online. That is about a 16% response from
those of voting age in the Parish. The online questionnaire was open to all residents of the parish, i.e.
the village and Taylor’s Farm residents, but the distribution of those who completed the online
questionnaire is not yet available.
An initial summary of the results will be presented at the Annual Parish
Meeting on 9th May and will then be posted on the Parish Council web
site.

The Evergreens The April meeting held a very enjoyable talk by David Ogborn about his involvement in the formation and conducting of choirs. He spoke
about being involved with the well known Welsh Male Voice Choir, the Moriston Orpheus Choir.
David then went on to talk about the choirs which are in and around Basingstoke. In 1974 he conducted a choir from Baughurst for 8 years then he was invited to conduct the Basingstoke Male Voice Choir
which he did for 29 years. This choir toured abroad including America and for some of the more mature members it was there first visit abroad.
The local hospital contacted David 3 years ago and the Basingstoke Hospital Male Voice Choir was formed which includes all different
professions. They have raised money for charities such as breast cancer care and the Alzheimer’s society. There is also a group in Tadley which started in St Mary's Church with around a few members
and now has 108 and meet on Tuesdays in the Methodist Church, also raising money for charity.
Finally David told us about the festival of choirs which includes 15 from around the area and will be performing at The Anvil on July 6th in recognition of World War I. They previously performed for the
Queen's Jubilee in 2012 with music from 1952- 2012. David also told us how to breath before singing and we finished with practising a couple of songs which everyone enjoyed.
Singing is known to be good for your health and for the social aspect and involvement of the community.
Our next meeting will be our birthday party in May

The Dedication of the Garden of
Remembrance at
St. Leonard’s Church Sherfield-on-Loddon
On the beautiful Spring morning of Sunday 13th April 2014, a large congregation gathered, after the Palm Sunday service, to be present at
the dedication of the Garden of Remembrance.
Sandy Johnson described how the garden had been reclaimed from a wilderness at the West end of the Churchyard, and that Alan Taplin had beautifully carved the oak sign which is now
in place in the garden.
Revd. Sammie Armstrong spoke of the pleasure of visiting
this peaceful place.
“To be there”, Sammie said, “enables us to
honour the life of a loved one and feel renewal and
revitalisation in one’s own life”.
He thanked everyone involved who used their skills and time in preparing the garden and the sign, which now marks our
Garden of Remembrance.
To the Glory of God this
sacred place is where our loved ones rest.

News from Councillor Chris Tomblin
I hope you all had a happy Easter break!
The run up to Easter has seen some bizarre happenings in the
Borough Council. The Razor’s farm planning application for 420 houses had gone to appeal as Croudace had claimed that the Borough had not made a timely planning decision. I have
previously reported that the Borough planning committee would choose to reject the application should it have had the chance, and to see it brought to the committee. This meant that the Council would oppose the
application at the public inquiry and hire a legal team to defend its position.
However on Monday 7th, the day before the start of the inquiry, an urgent planning meeting was convened. Members were told that the expert witness consultants had decided that new information provided by
Croudace regarding the Borough’s concerns were satisfactorily addressed and so they could not support the Borough’s case. Members of the
committee were not given the detailed papers but learnt that a proposed, Croudace funded bus service to the town (supported for only 3 years) and mitigation against industrial noise by way of non opening triple glazing
and special ventilation systems would therefore provide a sustainable development! Unfortunately a 7 to 5 (politically divided) vote by members meant that the Borough would now not defend their original objection.
To say that one could smell a rat would be an understatement!
So the next day I went to the inquiry to speak against the development.
One could not fail to notice that our defending legal representative was from the same firm as the one used by Croudace – apparently not uncommon. Bramley Parish Council, Chineham Parish Council and two
ward members from Chineham also spoke well; informing the Inspector of the issues faced by the local community should this development go
ahead. Our other ward member spoke in support of the development requesting that Cufaude Lane be blocked off to north bound traffic plus a relief road be provided across Taylor’s Farm. He was supported by a well
known local giving a brief speech to indicate that he is still no doubt “in touch” with our community.
We await the Inspector’s and Secretary of State’s verdict...........

NWR Report – May 2014 b y Gill Fearon
‘What did you do in the war Mummy?’ was the title of our April meeting. Although primarily an investigation into what women did in the first world war, we also talked about our parents’ generation in the second world war.
Some were in the forces, in protected occupations or worked as volunteers, whilst others were too young to be involved, but remembered living
through it.
During the ‘Great War’ of 1914-18 the guns in France could be heard by people in Kent. The British mainland was attacked at Scarborough,
Bridlington and Hartlepool when a German boat crossed the North Sea causing loss of life. Across the UK many young men failed to return home
and 12 from our village died. This had a huge impact on the workforce and so women had to go into what were traditionally male occupations. One million extra women were employed, but three quarters of a million
lost their jobs at the end of the war.
However, it encouraged many women to look further in their choice of work and indeed many had to work because only one in ten could marry
due to the shortage of men. We listened to talks on women in male occupations, munitions workers, women in medical jobs and women who
worked on the land. It was generally believed that women were not capable of doing ‘men’s’ work, but many proved otherwise by taking jobs in finance, vehicle maintenance, boiler-making and engineering and making a
success of it too.
Some went to work at the munitions factories – a dangerous occupation,
but much better paid than domestic service. There were some notable women doctors who ran hospitals near to the battlefields or at home in London. Closer to home, Almina, Lady Carnarvon, set up a hospital at
Highclere Castle before moving it to London and with high standards of care, improved the recovery rate of the patients. Producing enough food
for everyone was obviously very important and so many women became land girls. After six weeks training they could undertake farm duties whilst being paid 18 shillings a week . Although war is a grim topic, we all
enjoyed the evening immensely.
A team of 4 took part in the annual area quiz at Alton recently, coming joint fifth with a score of 65 (top score was 73). Our next meeting in May
is about the story of chocolate.

where I served as a response officer in the busy suburb of St Paul’s and Easton in Bristol before transferring back to Hampshire Constabulary.
Since returning to Hampshire in 2011 I have worked on the prisoner handling interview teams before joining the Tadley beat team in August 2012 where I have just completed nearly a year of Acting Sergeant duties
covering both Tadley and Whitchurch.
I am looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead and will be working
closely with PCSO Jim RICKABY who has been on the beat a number of years now. My aim is to make Bramley and the surrounding area a hostile place for criminals and those who cause issues within the community by
acting and doing things of an anti social manner.
You can follow us on @TadleyPolice twitter where regular updates on
local matters are posted, however please don’t report crime on this site and use the 101 service if the matter is not an emergency.
I look forward to meeting you all.
Regards
Martyn

The Women’s Institute
Reported by Ilene Iles
Dee Bulpitt, our President, welcomed Members and
visitors to our birthday Meeting in April. The Business Meeting opened proceedings – reports were given and other matters were discussed. Val
Denny gave details of our trip on the 13th May to Basildon Park, and Dee asked those present to put Saturday, 27th June 2015 in their diaries as The Loddon Group of WI’s would be holding a celebration on that day for
the Centenary of the W.I. at Kempshott Village Hall.
Dee then introduced Mr David Sullivan, our Speaker for the afternoon,
whose subject was “Being a Shepherd”. Mr Sullivan gave a very interesting, and at times a most amusing talk covering his life as a farmer and representing the UK in the World Sheep Shearing Championships in
1965.
A delicious birthday tea followed with a superb birthday cake made and
iced by Tess Morris and the raffle was drawn.
NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY 7TH MAY 2014 AT 2 P.M.
ANNUAL MEETING AND RESOLUTIONS
ST LEONARD’S CLEANING TEAM
St. Leonard’s Church thanks you – the shiny brass, the clean red carpet, the stonework free of cobwebs – all
because of our faithful hardworking teams.
Now it is time for our annual Rota meeting. Please come to the home of Dan and Jane Farrow on Monday 12th May at 7:45pm for the meeting followed by coffee/
tea and cakes.
We would welcome new recruits so please consider volunteering – it is not a huge commitment but it is a great way of helping our
church maintain its appeal to our local community.

Loddon Valley Link Envelope Scheme
Thank you to all who have given so far and just a final
reminder if you still want to help?
We ran our biannual envelope scheme in last month’s edition of the Link. Many readers who are unable to give time to help with the Link have in the past made donations via the envelope scheme in appreciation of receiving the magazine free of charge on a monthly basis. The income from such a scheme has in the past been highly encouraging and has helped us to keep ahead of the costs involved
in producing the magazine.
This is an entirely voluntary scheme and donations remain anonymous. All those involved in producing the magazine do so on a voluntary basis and the envelope scheme response gives them much encouragement that their efforts are appreciated by the community at
large. Just a small amount in each envelope is all we ask.
An envelope was included with your last copy of the Link, and gives
details of where to take it.
You can leave it at House 28 (Sherfield Post Office), The Shop, the Sherfield Community Centre or the Iron Duke pub (Stratfield Saye). Alternatively if you prefer you can make a payment by BACS (A/C
Loddon Valley Link, 30-90-53, 02288365).
Thank you for your support. Donald Dawson
The era of Baroque is the setting for Basingstoke Choral Society’s next concert at Douai Abbey on Saturday 28th
June. The concert programme will feature two well-known choral works, J S Bach’s Magnificat in D Major and Handel’s Dixit Dominus, together with Bach’s Toccata and Fugue with Basingstoke Choral Society’s own musical director, David Gibson, as soloist. The New London Sinfonia join us to play Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No 2. This promises to be a wonderful evening of Baroque music in the beautiful setting of Douai. Strawberries & cream and a glass of wine will be served before the concert, in the grounds of the Abbey. Tickets from the The Corn Exchange on 0845 5218 218 or
