    Navigation

On 22nd October 1707, four British warships struckrocks and sank off the Isles of Scilly with the loss of2,000 crew. The problem was navigation and it was

one of the big mysteries of that time. Latitude was noproblem (circle location points going round a globe)but nobody could work out how to mark longitude(circle location points going from north/south).Parliament set up a commission and offered a huge reward for anyonewho could find the answer.

For centuries the greatest minds tried to solve this problem. Amongstthem were Galileo, Sir Isaac Newton and Halley (of the comet fame).

The Observatory at Greenwich was established for this reason andmany believed that the answer lay in the stars and the movements ofthe moon. Then a self taught watchmaker, called John Harrison, came up with a preposterous idea: he said that the problem could besolved with a special clock, a chronometer. For decades he wasmocked, humiliated and rejected until proven right. His mechanicalinvention was an affront to the greatest of minds but he was right. Itssuggested that his invention paved the way to Britain becoming greatand ruling the waves.

On holiday recently I enjoyed doing at bit of basic map reading.Navigation is about measuring, something we do all the time: cooking, weighing, DIY, scoring for games, gardening etc. Everything we doseems to be about measuring, and to measure something you musthave a basic standard from which to work .

This is fine until it comes to human behaviour. What standard shouldwe use to measure right and wrong? We have the law of the land butHuman Rights legislation can push this aside. Lots of us measure our

standards of behaviour from other people by saying: Do to otherswhat they do to you. This is OK if people do nice things to you. Somefollow the 10 Commandments which are good but how do you makethem work?

Like John Harrisons clock, this may seem a most unlikely source ofmeasuring, but God has given us the standard, the measure of hisown life, in his Son who said: I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, follow me. The Creators life is on full display in his Son, Jesus, and

he offers to share his life with all who are willing to receive him.

    Christian greetings,

    Revd. Bob Politt

We would like to say a big t h ank y ou to the White Hart pub andSandhurst Marquees of Sherfield for putting together a wedding reception forus on Saturday 3rd September with less than a weeks notice! When things

went wrong with our planned venue I made a quick visit to the White Hart onAugust bank holiday weekend and from there our new venue and ten hourparty was arranged.

Luckily for us, Glenn from Sandhurst Marquees had availability for the dateand put together a fabulous marquee in the pub gardens. Manager Paul &chef Richard from the White Hart worked quickly with us to plan menus andarrange our outside bar facilities. Our two course lunch and evening buffetwere exceptional, receiving lots of compliments from our guests. The serviceby all the White Hart staff on the day was efficient, friendly and helpful.

Thanks to everyone involved, you made our day perfect! We really doappreciate all your hard work.

TEXT FOR THE MONTH From Colossians 4: 2-4Paul writes Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful andthankful and pray for us, too, that God may open a door forour message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ,

for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly,as I should.

May we, as members, be a source of love, hope, and comfort, compassion, challenge and inspiration to all whom we meet each day.Help us to be able to share our love and knowledge of you and be

able to speak of our experiences of your goodness to us and tell aboutthe difference you have made in our lives.Lord Jesus Christ, as we look at the world around us and hear news ofproblems everywhere, help us to keep faith and trust in you. Help usnot to be discouraged by our anxieties about the state of our owncountry. Help us remember what you did for us on the cross and beprepared to give all we have, for your people in our planet. Show usthat all that we possess comes from your generosity to us and by our

own generosity help us to show to everyone, that we meet, what partyou play in our lives. Grant to your people the inspiration of your HolySpirit that they may have the light of Christ in their hearts In Jesusname we pray. Amen

The Role of the Beat Officer

    WPC Mandy Jewell

I was recently asked if I would write an article about the

role of a beat (Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT))officer. The list below was published by our districtcommander recently, outlining what was expected fromus. Needless to say it is not an exhaustive list.

    Community engagement

    Partnership working

    Long term problem solving

    Investigating neighbourhood crimes

    Tackling Anti Social Behaviour (ASB)

The beat team is myself and Geoff, PCSO 13385 Fermor-Dunman.

    Community Engagement

We have regular contacts with our parish councils, of which

there are 7 and our Neighbourhood Watch coordinators. Theseprovide for a two way exchange of information and help us toprioritise our patrol plans in the light of changing circumstances. We hold a quarterly meeting with representatives from eachparish (this is named the beat panel) which reviews our activitiesand plans. From time to time we carry out ad hoc surveys togain input from various localities. within the beat area. We use a

survey form Your Voice Counts which is sent out for thispurpose.

    Partnership Working and Problem Solving

This term stems from the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 whichsets out an agenda whereby relevant agencies work together asnew problems emerge. It is designed to ensure that we all thinktogether and act in a concerted way.

We are fortunate, in the Basingstoke area, to have a goodworking relationship with the housing associations and the

Community Safety Team at Basingstoke & Deane BoroughCouncil. We have put a working group together to resolvevarious issues around the beat area. Currently we are workingtogether regarding the play area on the new estate at Bramley

and the lighting along the cinder track between the new estateand the railway station. This approach assists for long termproblem solving.

    Investigating Neighbourhood Crimes

As a beat team we check all the incidents which have occurredin the beat area and identify those where there are furtherenquiries to be made and possible arrests. For example we are

currently looking at a series of pushbike thefts where there areclear indications on links between the thefts.

We notify business communities and agricultural interests ofissues both inside and outside the area to enable them toincrease their state of alert if a crime trend begins to emergewhich is of particular relevance to them.

    Tackling Anti Social Behaviour (ASB)

We are particularly concerned to identify and address thecauses of ASB. For example disputes between adults generatedby children playing inappropriately can be avoided by providingthe right kind of play facilities for the children.

We have been fortunate this year. To date there havent beenmany incidents and those incidents which have been reportedhave not resulted in an ongoing problem. We patrol areas where

incidents have been reported to us and where from experiencewe know it is likely that issues may emerge.

Speed enforcement is another matter raised by residents, andagain it is a subject raised in most parishes across the area. Some beat officers have been trained to use the laser speeddetector, unfortunately only one in the Basingstoke rural area,so we still rely on our colleagues to support us in this role.

THE WOMENS INSTITUTEReported by Ilene Iles

At our September Meeting, Dee Bulpitt, our President, remarked on whata good turnout there was. There were 41 present. She mentioned that,

sadly, Peggy Clarkson had passed away in the last month and a shortsilence was held in her memory. Dee reported that Lois Batting is nowhome and doing well. Jerusalem was sung unaccompanied and theMinutes of the previous Meeting read by Ilene and signed by Dee. Thecorrespondence was dealt with by Val Denny. She confirmed the trip toBletchley Park on the 11th October will take place. It will leave The WhiteHart at 9.30 am. Evelyn Holdaway gave the Treasurers Report and Deeadvised those present that our subscriptions for the coming year are

increasing. Dee also mentioned that there would not be a walk thismonth. Brenda Frost distributed the birthday cards for the month andSocial and Group Skittles evenings were discussed. Dee mentioned thatthe schedules are ready, with application forms, for our CookeryCompetition in November. The Business Meeting closed at 2.45 pm.Dee then introduced our Speaker Ms Anne Bremmer of Harper AspreyWildlife Rescue whose talk was entitled Sharing Our WildlifeExperiences. Anne brought with her a colleague and six small rescue

animals! She started her talk by telling us that they are based nearCamberley and have 27 volunteers and great support from Brian May ofQueen who lets them use part of his property in Windlesham forpreparing the animals for their release back into the wild. They deal withinjured and abandoned deer, foxes, badgers, bats, ducks, squirrels, hedgehogs, spiders the list seemed almost endless. Anne emphasisedthat ALL the animals go back to the wild they are never kept as petsand, if they cannot be released, they are euthanased. We were given lotsof information about wildlife, their habits, feeding, preferred environments,

the harm that we humans cause with pesticides, slug pellets etc., and theillnesses and other stresses they suffer. During her talk, Annes colleaguebrought round a baby pipistrelle bat, Rodney a baby hedgehog, andSammy (hedgehog) who was only 5 days old, a baby tufted duck and twobaby grey squirrels! When they are old enough the will be put into a verylarge enclosure without human contact to make them human wary beforebeing released back into the wild. Val gave the vote of thanks for a veryamusing and interesting talk.

A delicious tea followed and the raffle was drawn.

    Report by Gill Fearon

Sadly our September meeting had to be changed owing to the deathof Chris Hortons mother. Chris was planning a play reading so this

had to be postponed to a later date. At the last minute, Jo Brennanstepped in with a talk about the year she and her family spent living inJerusalem in 1966-7. Her husband was an Ophthalmologist with theRAF and worked in the hospital in Jerusalem. Jerusalem has had avery chequered past and was under British control from 1922 to 1948when it was divided between the newly created state of Israel, andJordan.

Jo described living in a simple flat which had no heating and wastherefore very cold in the low temperatures of winter. She relatedgoing up onto the roof to peg out her washing and being shot at byJewish snipers. Everywhere she went she had to be covered up.Whilst there, Jo and her family visited local sites including Wadi Rumwhere Laurence of Arabia apparently hid. She described the RiverJordan as being very narrow, not as wide as the River Thames, whichsurprised us and also visited Nabulus, the site of Abrahams Tomb.

She passed round photos to show us what these places were like andalso passed round some lovely jewellery which she had acquiredthere.

Towards the end of their stay there was trouble in Ram Allah whereher older children went to school by bus. One day the bus did notreturn and so Jo drove herself to try to collect them, but was thwartedby tanks blocking the road. Eventually the children were brought backby soldiers, but it was obviously a terrifying ordeal, although Joseemed to be very relaxed and calm about it and indeed about thewhole experience of living in a great melting pot of a city at that time. When war broke out in 1967 Jo and her family had to flee toDamascus in Syria. It was a very interesting talk which we allthoroughly enjoyed. Even I, in my jet-lagged state, managed to stayawake!

This talk kept to our theme of Around the World and we also plan tohear another talk by a member on the Amazon. Our October meetingwill be a Music Evening when we will choose music from our visitsabroad.

Can you help Cats Protections Basingstoke & DistrictBranchraise cash for the kitty?

Cats Protections Basingstoke & DistrictBranch needs to recruit a FundraisingOfficer to enable it to raise money and helpeven more cats and kittens. The branch, which is run entirely byvolunteers, needs someone who can sparea few hours a week to oversee itsfundraising activities. No previousfundraising experience is necessary as thecharity can provide assistance and support

    materials.

Cats Protection is the UKs leading cat charity and the Basingstoke &District Branch is part of a nationwide network of 257 volunteer-runbranches and 30 adoption centres that together help over 230,000cats each year.As well as finding new homes for unwanted and abandoned cats, thecharity also offers cat care advice to the public and can help towardsthe cost of neutering.

Hillary Wells, Branch Co-ordinator said: The branch does a huge

amount of work to help local cats but we really need someone to helpraise money to enable us to carry on our work. The role is a variedone and includes booking events, organising volunteers to help, attending fetes and fairs and organising raffles. They dont have to be a fundraising expert, as the charity can provideassistance and support materials, but we do need someone whocares about cats and has bags of enthusiasm. The role is a voluntary

one and by sparing just a couple of hours a week it can make a hugedifference to needy cats. We are sure whoever takes on the role willfind it incredibly rewarding. Its also a great way to make new friends both human and feline!

SHERFIELD F C end of season report 2010 - 2011Once again the club has encountered a difficult season both on & off thefield of play. A year ago Don Campbell stood down as 1st team manager& despite a lot of effort, we were unable to find a successor. Sadly Donalso made the decision to retire from the committee so leaving us withouta chairman. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Don for hiscommitment and contribution to the club over the years.

This resulted in Jordan Haddock becoming player manager but sadly bythe end of October Jordan also resigned due to the pressure of theposition. Meanwhile the reserve team, managed by Chris Spencer whomissed most of the season due to serious injury, were performing welland with very good results.

The club suffered a cruel & severe setback when the pavilion was broken

into causing 1,450 worth of damage. My sincere thanks to Adrian Burt &Lloyd Gibbons who carried out emergency repairs, the following day.

Meanwhile I took over the position of 1st team manager but the 1st teamstruggled to get the right results. On a positive note, the reserve teamreached the county cup semi-final which was a great achievement.

However in the new year it became apparent that despite the club having54 registered players we were unable to raise two teams. This resultedwith the reserve team being withdrawn from the league with Chris

Spencer & Gary Staff becoming joint managers of the one remainingteam. Despite an improvement with results the 1st team was relegatedfrom the premier league for next season.

I would like to thank the following for their continued support - The WhiteHart, Sandhurst Marquees, Saracen Aviation, The Four Horseshoes, TheShop, Sherfield Oaks Golf Club, Longford Mill, Mekanix, SCATS ,Wyvalegarden centre car wash & Sherdon Estate Agents plus others tonumerous to mention for their raffle donations and help over the year. I

would like to express a sincere thank you to Mr Matt Todd of CPN Ltd,who kindly supplied a new kit for the season. Also a special thank you toJan Holden for her help & support & the remaining 8 gentlemen of theclub committee & last but by no means least" The Wags".

The officers for the club for the forthcoming season are Gary Staff,Chairman, Gary Spencer, Secretary and Jan Holden, Treasurer. WayneBrewer has accepted to position of honorary president in recognition ofhis commitment and contribution to the club over the years.

Our fundraising efforts continue with The Four Horseshoes running'Bonus Ball' competition every week plus The White Hart holding ourmonthly 'Meat Raffle' for 2 a ticket you could win 40 of vouchers tospend in The Shop. Meat Raffle is drawn on 1st Sunday on every month.
