Welcome to the July edition of the Link.

This month’s highlights include an absolutely fascinating article on

thatching and growing thatching straw, important local industries given

the number of thatched cottages in our villages.

The Borough Councillor’s update from Elaine Still includes a tribute to the

late David Leivesley. David was a driving force in bringing the new Sherfield Park Parish

Council into being, but tragically he died before he could

see his dream come to fruition. Elaine paints a picture of aman who devoted his life to making things better for others.

Congratulations to Cllr Marilyn Tucker, who has celebrated

forty years as a Councillor.

Our summer events are well under way. We have a picture

report of last month’s Sherfield-on-Loddon Village Fete.

Many thanks to Gillian Barlin for the lovely photos in the

report and the cover picture. We are now looking forward to

Sherfest in Sherfield Park in July and Sherfield & District

Show in September. As Simon said last month September

may seem a long way off but it will soon be here. A

reminder that the Loddon Valley Link has a best cover

photograph competition awarded at the show. We’re very

keen to get lots of good quality, local interest photographs

for our cover. So send your entries to the editor - photos

Dear friends.

When I was growing up getting a model

aircraft kit for a birthday was considered to

be a good present. I loved them but, for

some reason, they didn’t like me. They

required me to be meticulous and careful; I

was neither. They required me to read

instructions and follow them but I preferred

to just stick them together because I knew

better. What? Paint the pilot before putting

him in the cockpit? Why, that would take

weeks and I only had one hour. There were

always bits left over and there were always

tears and tantrums. My dad invariably took

over and brought the ill fated project to a

conclusion.

I wonder how many of you still try and

assemble flat pack furniture without reading

instructions? In a very real sense I failed

miserably as a child where ‘Airfix’ kits were

concerned. You might have discerned then

that I was not a practical child. So, how

come I ended up as a carpenter/cabinet

maker working patiently on intricate

commissions all day every day for a

considerable period of my life? Well, for a

start I grew up and then, along the way,

someone taught me to persevere and never

give up. Someone taught me that failure

was the key to success.

For some people ‘failure’ is a dirty word;

‘failure is not an option’. With respect, givingup should not be an option. Failure is a

great gift and gives us great gifts. When we

fail at something we are given an

opportunity to grow, to become a better

human being. It allows us to reflect on what

we might do next time. It allows us to seek

the wisdom and advice of others. It allows

us to improve techniques and discover

better materials. It allows us to become

listeners, learners and it teaches us

humility. Most importantly it

allows us to empathise with

others and become mentors who

understand life’s tricks and turns.

The society we live in applauds success

and rewards those who do well. But it

excoriates those who fail by bullying or

verbally crucifying them on Twitter or

Facebook and, if they are public figures, in

the press or on television. At the same time

most individuals would recognise the value

of failure. Strange, aren’t we? It seems to

me that before pointing the finger at others

we should always remember our own

journey, our own failures and victories as

well as those who mentored us. Peter the

Apostle was always putting his foot in it,

always speaking out of turn. All of his

indiscretions could be forgiven; after all, he

was bumbling and clumsy, a bit of a lovable,

comical character. How could he, though,be forgiven for denying that he even knew

Jesus, after Jesus’ arrest, (John 18:15)

especially after he had vociferously claimed

that he would die for him? (John 13: 37). So

poignant then the way in which Jesus not

only forgave him after his resurrection, but

also restored him to full fellowship and

friendship (John 21 15-17). As we read on

through the New Testament it is often clear

what Peter had learned from his failures

and how that affected the way he related to

others. In his greatest weakness he foundacceptance, strength, healing, hope and a

future in Jesus - and we can too.

Just before the Easter break, Ofsted’steam arrived at Bramley C of EPrimary School and carried out itslong-anticipated inspection. To thegreat delight of everyone in Bramleyconnected with the school, the finaloverall rating was ‘Good’. The School

Leaders are delighted that the reportreflects the ‘relentless focus onsecuring good progress for all pupils’,that ‘high expectations (for staff andpupils) have created a culture inwhich all are expected to strive to dotheir best’ and recognises the ‘strongteam who work closely together toimprove outcomes for pupils.’Teamwork and high aspirations forthe children’s learning have ensured

that ‘teaching has improved andpupils’ standards have risen’.

In an interview with the BramleyMagazine, Miss Hodgkinson and MrMoore, the Head and Deputy,commented that the inspection was avery positive experience. They feltthat the judgement was reflective ofthe dedication and determinationconsistently demonstrated by the staffto do the very best for the pupils atBramley. The report states that ‘pupils

are happy and they enjoy school.They have very positive attitudes and

want to do well.’

The Ofsted team took into account allof the comments made by parents,both informally on the playground andthrough the on-line parent viewsurvey. In a letter to parents MissHodgkinson wrote, ‘It is heart-warming to know that the hard work

and effort that has been put intodriving the school forward isrecognised and appreciated.’ Ms.Nicky Parker, the Chair of Governors,assured parents in the letter that staffand governors “would not be restingon our laurels. We know there is stillplenty more work to do; and we knowwe can rely on your support in ourquest to become an outstandingschool.” It is clear that the School is

committed to giving the children atBramley C of E Primary Schoolexceptional learning opportunitiesand to build on all of the successes

that have been achieved.

The Loddon Valley Link is a church andvillage magazine that serves the communitywithin the local distribution area byproviding local information, news andarticles which are both informative and ofgeneral interest. The committee hasdecided to take this involvement one stepfurther and offer a limited number of grants

to organisations that are, but not limited to,those involved with youth groups, sports orsenior citizens. In making an application thefollowing criteria apply:-

The organisation must be charitable

or voluntary.

The organisation must be within the

magazine distribution area.

The request must be for a specific

item or event.

The request would generally not

exceed £200

It must be shown in theapplication how the request willbenefit the community involved with theorganisation.

Any request should be submitted either byemail or in writing to the committeesecretary Ilene Iles (see back of magazinefor details) by 5th August at the latest. It is

hoped a number of awards will be made,but this is dependent on applications. Thecommittee will make the final decisions andall applicants will be informed of theoutcome. Names of those successful will beprinted in the September edition of themagazine. There is no appeal forapplications that are not approved.

Loddon Valley Link Grant Award

John Field, a retired solicitor from Ashstead,has been a magician for over forty years Herecently gave the Probus Club ofBasingstoke an informative insight into thehistory of magic.

The first known magician was Dedi, in 2700BC. He was famous for cutting the head offa bird – then attaching another one so the

bird could fly away. The secret? It’s all to dowith the way a bird will tuck its head under awing.

Witchcraft suspects were pricked with abodkin – a needle with a small handle totest for a numb spot where the Devil hadkissed the alleged witch. Initially thesuccess rate was minimal, so the bodkinwas redesigned, putting the needle on aspring to retract when touching anything.From then onwards, the fate of hundreds ofinnocents was sealed.

In later years magiciansmade fortunes. WilliamEllsworth Robinson calledhimself Chung Ling Soo. Hecaught bullets in his teeth,and it paid extremely well –in 1912 he was earning the equivalent of£31,500 per week. Unfortunately the trickeventually went wrong and he was killed.

John demonstrated his ability to mind-readrandom National Lottery numbers from theaudience, getting all six numbers correct.He closed, with the help of an audienceassistant, in a demonstration of the “cupand ball” trick. Even an observer at closequarters could not detect how it was done.

We live in an area with alarge proportion of thatchedhouses and probably notcoincidently a vast acreageof fields growing thatching

straw.

Turgis Court Farm in Stratfield Turgis isone of the largest growers and suppliers ofthatching straw in the country. Around 300acres each year are grown. Two types ofstraw are grown, Triticale and MarrisWidgeon. These are the preferred cropsbecause of the length and strength of thestraw they produce.

It all starts in early September when thefields are ploughed and cultivated. Theseed is then sown into the ground using acorn drill. The seeds quickly germinate andthe plants grow quickly so in a few weeksthere will be a nice green covering across thefields. As winter comes along the cropsbecome dormant until the spring. In March

and April when the soil temperatures warmup and the daylight hours get longer thecrops begin to grow again. It is now thatfertilisers and plant nutrients are applied andweeds and diseases are monitored. The cropwill grow on through its growth stages; byJune will have grown to its maximum lengthand will have produced an ear of grain at thetop. In July the crop will start to die off andthe grain will harden. At the end of July the

crop is fit to cut and the harvest will start.

First to go in is the combine with headerstripper. This machine has a large rotor withfingers which goes through the crop andtakes the grain off leaving the stem of the

straw behind.

Next the straw harvesters will cut, clean andbundle the straw. The bundles are thenstrapped into bales which are stored in the

barns.

When the thatcher needs the straw itwill be delivered to site. The thatcher

will open the bales and give thebundles a final clean and trim. Thebundles are taken up and laid usingspars to fix the straw to the roof. Thespars are hazel sticks twisted in themiddle to create a large spring staple.For a small cottage around threetonnes of straw would be needed. Astraw roof can last 25 years. Mike,Steve & the team.

Life stories ofsoldiers of the FirstWorld War listed onthe village war

3500/ Rifleman Alfred C. Brant, 2ndBattalion Rifle Brigade, died 10th July

1916

Alfred Charles Brant was born inSherfield-on-Loddon in 1888 to Williamand Annie Brant. By 1901 there were fivechildren in the Brant family and Alfredwas the middle child. His sisters wereaged 16 and 10, while Alfred’s older

brother was 20 and his younger brother just 8. In 1901 Alfred lived with his familynear the pond, in one of the threecottages which are now part of Wheeler’sCourt. Alfred’s father worked as akitchen gardener, possibly at BuckfieldHouse, now Sherfield School.

In 1909, aged 18, Alfred enlisted as aregular soldier in the 2nd Battalion RifleBrigade. At the outbreak of the FirstWorld War he was serving in India, but byNovember 1914 the battalion had beenredeployed to France.

In 1915 the 2nd Battalion served withdistinction at the capture of Neuve-

Chapelle, though with high casualties.Later the same year there were furtherheavy losses at the Battle of Loos. In1916 Rifleman Brant may have beenwounded when the battalion carried outan attack on enemy lines under heavyshell-fire at Oviller -la-Boiselle on 1st July.128 men from the 2nd Battalion were

killed or wounded on that day.

Alfred Brant was brought back to the RedCross Hospital in the Cathedral Close inWinchester, where, according to records,

he died of gunshot wounds on 10th July1916. He is buried in St Leonard’sChurchyard, Sherfield-on-Loddon; theonly man commemorated on the villagewar memorial to be buried within theparish.

on-LoddonCommunity CareGroup.

For many yearsshe has organised rides for the people ofSherfield and the surrounding villages for

their appointments to and from thehospital, the surgeries, the dentist etc.She has a list of volunteer drivers and it

may entail many phone calls to organisethese rides.

Sadly Doreen was unable due to ill healthto attend the Volunteer Centre receptionon June 9th to receive her award whichshe richly deserves. I invite the readersof the Loddon Valley Link to join me inthanking her for her years of excellentwork and commitment to our community.

Summer Tennis Camp

Although Basingstoke and DeaneBorough Council has undertaken toclear the litter bins the parish council isstill hoping to find a new litter warden.The vacancy is for 6 hours a week butyou will need to be over 16 to apply.

Disposal of Dog Waste Bags

You have probably seen the new dogwaste stations where waste bags areavailable. Unfortunately some dogowners are using the bags, but not thebins. Hanging used dog bags onfences, trees, etc, is unsightly andpotentially harmful to the environment.It is much more difficult to clear baggedwaste if it is not in the bins provided.Please keep the village clean and tidy.

Drivers We provide a service for elderlypeople in your community, particularly forthose who find it difficult to use publictransport or lack the confidence to go outon their own. We provide a driving service

using our volunteers’ own cars. We needdrivers who can spare a few hours a weekduring the day time, Monday to Friday, andwho have comprehensively insured carswhich are suitable for carrying elderlypeople. We will cover petrol costs fromhome (currently 45p per mile). Even if youcan only offer one day or part of a day thiswould help us. You can choose whathours/days you are available and whatduties you undertake.

BefriendersWould you have anhour a week free in the daytime(Monday to Friday)? Manyelderly people would love to have someoneto come and see them for a cup of tea and

INCREASED SECURITY PUSH BEGINS AT JUNE COUNCIL MEETING

Sherfield Park is blessed with low crimerates. With a new police representative anda drive to expand our existingNeighbourhood Watch, we plan to keep it

that way.

PCSO Krystof (Krys) Nadvornik dropped byJune’s Parish Council meeting to introducehimself and address concerns aboutwindscreen-wiper flipping and a manspotted lurking in bushes around Cufaude

Lane. The police believe the wiper incidentsare juvenile pranks, but the lurker is anobvious concern. Krys will be increasing his

patrols; look out for him on his bicycle.

Remember that the police can’t investigatewhat they don’t know about. Report anyunusual incidents to Krys [email protected] or dial 101 and ask for him by his collarnumber: 16299.

Why not go a step further and get involved

yourself? The Council is looking forvolunteers for both our existingNeighbourhood Watch programme and anew Speed Watch group. The latter willlearn how to use monitoring equipment,then go out in teams on occasional livemonitoring of problem roads. They reportany problem registration numbers to thepolice, who then issue warning letters. Theywill visit any driver with three infractions.

WORKING GROUP ON BROADBANDSPEED SEEKS MEMBERS

One of the top frustrations across SherfieldPark is our sluggish broadband speed. TheCouncil is calling on concerned citizens toget involved, particularly those withcommunications industry contacts.

The group’s initial objectives: clearly definethe problem; attempt to get better answersfrom BT than those provided thus far; andconsider a plan of advocacy and action toprovoke more action on BT’s part. We’llalso explore alternatives to the Infinityupgrade and, if we find viable ones,propose them to the Council for possibleinvestment.

schedule. Building is on time (see photo onfacing page) and a series of interviewshave been conducted with prospectiveshopkeepers. An extraordinary meeting ofthe SPCA should have been held to discussthe subcommittee’s recommendation, thewinner confirmed by trustees, and anannouncement of the winner made, by lateJune. Then preparations will begin inearnest to ready the shop for its anticipatedpre-Christmas opening.

COMMUNITY CENTRE LOFT

CONVERSION PROJECT

The SPCA plans to go out to tender for theconstruction phase of this project before theend of June. We’re adding a first floor withtwo new rooms, a toilet and kitchenette withtwo separate stairways for access. This willgreatly increase the building’s space, for

hire for a wide variety of functions, whilstalso generating some much-neededrevenue. Depending on the response frombuilding contractors, the construction workshould start by autumn this year. This is abig job that will inevitably impact on life atthe Community Centre, but we’ll makeevery effort to find practical workarounds tokeep disruption to a minimum during thiskey phase of work. Glenda Holder, our President for the JuneMeeting, welcomed everyone; in particularshe welcomed Evelyn Holdaway and LynChivers back on to the Committee.

Business was conducted and Memberswere informed that our Centenary Tree hasbeen planted beside the path over the

Village Green. A formal ceremony will takeplace in the near future to include allMembers when a plaque will be placed withthe tree.

Glenda then introduced our Speaker for theafternoon, Group Captain DavidGreenaway, O.B.E., R.A.F., Retired, whosetalk, illustrated with slides, was entitled“Flying with the Royal Family”. The GroupCaptain informed us that he spent 37 yearsin the R.A.F. and 2 years (1989-1991) withthe Royal Flight, which is sadly no more.His job was to arrange all the Royal Flights

and liaise with the principal passengers.Over the two years, he flew 400 flights withall the principal and senior members of theRoyal Family – 100 of those flights were

with PrincessDiana, for whomhe had greatadmiration. He recounted many anecdotesand showed slides of his time spent withthe Royal Flight, which he felt veryhonoured and privileged to have enjoyed.

Glenda gave the vote of thanks and a

discussion was held on arrangements forour July Meeting – an Indoor Street Partyand Celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s90th Birthday.

A lovely tea followed and the raffle wasdrawn.

Women’s Institute

Local care at home provider Bluebird Careis to make its first ever community grant.£250 will be made available to thecommunity group or initiative that workswith older people within Basingstoke and

Deane Borough or Hart District, and thatcan best demonstrate a need for additionalsupport. As well as £250 the group will alsoreceive support and advice from BluebirdCare. Director Phil Miles observes thatwithout the work of community groups whoorganise coffee mornings, day-trips or lunchclubs, many elderly people would be leftisolated at home.”We want to work with alocal project that gives older people anopportunity to try something new, such asgardening, leisure, recreational, help with

day trips or musical activities.”

The June meeting began with adiscussion regarding business matters.Unfortunately our speaker did not arrivefrom the RSPB Basingstoke branch sothe members decided to have a fewgames of bingo. We then enjoyed alovely fruit cake with our cup of tea,

baked by Gwen Moring who celebratesher birthday this month. The meetingended with a raffle.The next meeting on the 4th July is achange of programme and will be a quizinstead of a beetle drive

First of all, I must apologise to the four

ladies concerned (Chris, Hazel, Wendyand Maggie) for omitting to write in thelast report that they came first in the AreaQuiz at Hook. This is a challenging quizwith several rounds, so a big well done tothem! Only thing is, now we have toorganise the one next year!

Our last meeting was about our favouritegenius, or at least someone we admirefor a good reason. This topic was inrecognition of our theme this year, whichcelebrates the centenary of Einstein’s‘Theory of General Relativity’. We startedwith Brunel, born in 1806, who isconsidered to be one of the mostingenious and prolific figures inengineering history and one of thegreatest figures of the IndustrialRevolution. He built the Great Western

Railway, aseries ofsteamshipsandnumerous bridges and tunnels, whichgreatly changed the face of publictransport. James Ellis was anotherchoice (no one had heard of him) whowas instrumental in making online use

safer and more secure. His contributionto the world of computing has beencompared with that of Alan Turing. Alsoin the world of technology, we had awoman mathematician who developed ananalytical engine in the 1840s, theforerunner of our modern computer. Thisthis was Ada Lovelace, the daughter ofLord Byron. She was thought to be thefirst computer programmer. Someoneelse said that she admired the gardenerGeoff Hamilton, whose approach togardening was down to earth (no pun

intended!) as he made it simple andcheap for everyone to enjoy. Otherchoices included Charles Darwin, Mozartand Marie Curie, whose talents need noexplanation. Something we noticed isthat many of them died relatively young(30s to 50s), and also that most werearound in the 1800s.

Our next meeting is a book discussionand the book we have been reading is‘The Boy Who Loved Anne Frank’ by

Ellen Feldman.

Anti Social Behaviour:

The four reports of ASB were a decrease ofsix reported incidents over the previousmonth.

Burglaries: The dwelling burglary relates to an incidentwhere offenders climbed on to a roof of aproperty and “jemmied” open a secondstorey window. They carried out an untidysearch and stole jewellery and a laptop.

Suspicious Incidents:

There was nothing to concern me about the

increase in these reports. Suspiciousincidents do not necessarily indicate acrime, but we would rather receive the callin case it turns out to be something serious.

Indecency

There were indecency offences in Sherfieldon Loddon due to a male exposing himselfover the last month. Through enquiries wehave established that the male involved who

does not live locally butwas working in the area.He was arrested andcharged with numerousoffences and has alsobeen sacked from hisemployment. Since then there have been nofurther offences.

Impaired Driving

This incident related to a drink driver beingspotted by an off duty officer and followeduntil another unit arrived. The male driverwas arrested for drink drive after providing apositive breath test. He does not live locally.

David Leivesley

I would like to begin my article by payingtribute to the late David Leivesley.

David’s work in the community of SherfieldPark changed people’s lives for the better.It has been said before, but sometimes it isthe little things in life that make everythingbetter. Yet these little things all needsomeone to make them happen. David wasthe person who made lots of things happen.He was passionate about turning a newhousing estate filled with an eclectic groupof strangers, none of whom knew eachother, into a community that had identityand a feeling of drive and ambition. Aboveall he wanted to make Sherfield Parksomewhere that people loved to live, notbecause of the usual estate agent clichés,but because it had a beating heart.

His vision to see where we could get to, ata time when there were only a handful offamilies living in Sherfield Park, wasremarkable, and his drive and tenacious

character turned that vision into reality forall of us. The Sherfield Park Community Association was formed by a group of thoseearly residents to look after the promisedCommunity Centre. There were manybumps and hurdles along the way, butwhen David was elected Chairman, themomentum was unstoppable. With hisupbeat attitude and resolute determinationDavid squashed those bumps and hurdles.People would say to him “you don’t give up,do you?” to which he replied “Why would I?It’s not right”.

Perhaps the surprising part of David’scharacter to those who had not met him,was that this tenacity, determination andrefusal to accept the status quo, wasdelivered with warmth, friendliness andcompassion, alongside a keen sense ofhumour and ready smile.

Sherfield Park has much to thank David for;the post box that we were told would nevercome, the benches and bins that we walkpast without asking how they got there and

the thriving hub of our fledglingdevelopment, our Community Centre. Thenewly formed Sherfield Park ParishCouncil was also instigated and drivenforward by David.

Parish Council

I am so delighted to hear that SherfieldPark Community Association will be namingthe new wing of the Community Centreafter David, in tribute to a great man whodid so much for our

community. We are

now reaping the benefits of his foresightand determination.

I would like to wish the new Parish Counciland its councillors every success for thefuture. I look forward to our new ParishCouncil working closely with our thrivingCommunity Association in the best interestsof our community.

I’m always eager to hear from residentswith any issues or comments. Just email orphone me - I need your feedback and input

I attended the planning appeal hearing onDixon Road and spoke against theapplication for three gypsy caravans withassociated day rooms. This application hadpreviously been rejected by Basingstoke &Deane Borough Council planning authority.The appeal lasted two days and on the finalday we attended the site with thegovernment inspector where morequestions were asked and commentsmade. I would also like to acknowledge theresidents from Fernhill Place who attendingthe appeal hearing and put forward theircase for refusal with calm, dignified andsound reasoning. We now await the

government inspector’s decision.

At the recent mayor -makingceremony in BasingstokeCouncilllor Marilyn Tuckerwas presented with a bunchof flowers to mark 40 years asBorough Councillor. Theoutgoing mayor, Councillor Anne Court, wanted to markthe occasion in this way.Marilyn (for whom thepresentation was a completesurprise) said “I’m very luckyto have such a lovely ruralarea to represent. I didn’t geton to the council for politics, I just wanted to help people. It’s wonderful the residents keep voting forme.”

We extend our congratulations to Marilynon her remarkable achievement.

Forty Years On

Basingstoke Town Ladies had a successful2015/16 season with both teams. The FirstTeam are Southern Region PremierLeague CHAMPIONS and have gainedpromotion to the FA Women’s PremierLeague Southwest Division 1. Our ReserveTeam had a great first season in theHampshire County Women’s FootballLeague Division 2, having been promotedlast year.

We are now looking to expand both oursquads.

architect, the late Francis Johnson.

Members of Bramley WI Lite were delightedto hear that the club had raised over £4,000for charity at their Sapphires and Sparklesfundraiser held in April at Sherfield-on-

Loddon Village Hall. This special ladies’night was attended by 116 local women andwas supported by businesses from acrossthe area.

On the evening guests were welcomed witha glass of fizz. Entertainment from tributeact ‘Forever Barlow’ and a buffet supper

were followed by fundraising activities,which included a table raffle, auction, raffleand a game of heads and tails. This wasfollowed by a disco provided by local DJ,Peter Cook. The MC on the evening waswriter (and entertainer!) ClareMacnaughton.

The proceeds of the evening, a staggering£4,131.83 will be split between theChildren’s Ward (G2) at Basingstoke andNorth Hampshire Hospital, and Bramley WILite, which will have its running costssecured over the next few years and and

will help them to run bigger and betterevents for its members.

Bramley WI Lite is part of the NationalFederation of Women’s Institutes. It is WIbut with a modern twist. The grouplaunched in 2007 and have since gone fromstrength to strength; they are proud to havearound 30 members, who meet once amonth.
