Besides ‘Ellam Inba Mayam, the famed MLV-P. Leela duet, othersongs in ‘Manamagal’ too became popular. One of them was ‘Chinnan Chiru Kiliye’, a famous song written by the MahakaviSubramania Bharathiyar and sung by MLV and the singer-actorof yester-decades V. N. Sundaram. Many years later, Sundaramtold this writer (and also on camera for this writer’s TV film on MLV)that this song was recorded twice. After the first recording at aMadras City studio, NSK was not satisfied with its quality. So hehad it recorded again at his favorite studio Newtone in Kilpauk, profusely apologizing to the two singers for troubling them! Thatwas NSK!
Another popular duet in the film ‘ Iru kaadhalar magizhndhe’ waspicturised on Padmini and Sahasranamam. Not many are awarethat the male voice singing this song along with MLV was that ofSubbaraman himself! It was the only occasion that he sang a songin films.
Subbaraman composed music for several popular movies like‘Leila Majnu’ and ‘Devadas’. It is a matter of deep regret that hepassed away at a young age under somewhat sad circumstances. There were rumors at that time that his end was not natural...!
Coincidentally, with Subbaraman’s passing, MLV’s cine marketalso appears to have dipped. Of course the era of Classical musicin films was also fast fading away. MLV’s last playback song wasfor Hamse Geethe, a Kannada film, in which she sings a Jayadevaashtapadhi.
THE STORY OF NANDANARThe story of Nandanar, as immortalised by Gopalakrishna
Bharathi, was filmed thrice, each time with a few Carnatic musicgreats.
Not many are aware that some legendary figures and giants ofclassical Carnatic music had links with Tamil cinema. They had noserious intention or aim of becoming movie stars and yet they didappear in movies. But soon they abandoned ship and, to mixmetaphors, took off to greener pastures on their home turf! Somehad the desire to flash on screen and but their wishes remained meredreams. The glittering list of gems includes many legends of musicand contains many surprises - Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer,Musiri Subramania Iyer, G. N. Balasubramaniam,Thiruvavaduthurai N. Rajaratnam Pillai, Mysore T. Chowdaiah, S.Rajam, S. Balachandar, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar,Palakkad T. S. Mani Iyer, K. V. Narayanaswami, ChittoorSubramania Pillai, Kalakkad Ramanarayana Iyer, ThiruvengaduSubramania Pillai, Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna, T. N.Seshagopalan. And, yes, even Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. Quitea list that! And that too a male list!
The first trained classical Carnatic musician to enter TamilCinema was Sambur Vadagarai Subbaiah Bhagavathar. He wasa top stage star of his day and folks came to hear him singaccompanied by the harmonium maestro K. S. Devudu Iyer, whowas the most famous harmonium-player of them all.
S.V. Subbaiah Bhagavathar had a fine voice and sang with verve. His on-stage ‘duels’ with the famed harmonist were a great attrac-tion per se and drew huge crowds. SVS would sing a line of a song andDevudu Iyer would play it on his harmonium adding some touchesof his own. Bhagavathar would then sing the same line once morewith inspired ‘sangathies’ of his own making gestures with his handsand face challenging the harmonist. And never the one to say die,Devudu Iyer would play the same line again adding more strokeswhich would be difficult for the human voice to reproduce with thesame effect and impact! Thus the duel would go on with the samesong for seemingly long unending minutes but the audiences lovedit all and cheered the two wildly with glee. In fact groups would beformed supporting either Bhagavathar or Iyer! In some rich townsand villages, even bets were placed on the outcome of the battle ofmusical wits! The play, scene, its content and all were forgottenduring these friendly duels!

“How is your great Metro water?”. Friend Varadarajan, Secretaryof the Old Timers’ Club, wanted to find out how healthy the oldies andyoungees in Anna Nagar Western Extension, the neglected part ofthe city, fare in the recharged stench of the city, obviously abandonedby the Corporation and the Metrowater Board, but still lying withinthe city about 15 kms from Poes Garden.
He was concerned that he should not be caught clueless at themeeting of the Association should any sufferer pose the liquid point.
Prasad, my architect-builder was prescient about what mayhappen to the Metrowater should the Cooum take a fancy to be anuninvited guest to its mains. So we asked him to go ahead and burrowthe bowels of our own plot and we got excellent potable water which, once in a long while, would remind us that an iron tang is good forhealth. Thank you, Prasad for the bore-well, which is our ONLYsustenance now after the Cooum has conquered the Metro mains ofthis part of Amma’s Chennai.
From immemorial habit of two baths a day, we have learnt thatthe reduced luxury is not harmful and one saves a lot on toilet soap. The Cooum-mix is not lifted from our sump to the overhead tank, asit may kill the plants and the coconut trees that yield our dailykitchen needs. At the suggestion of a fellow sufferer, we are nowfluidly well armed with the acquisition of bottled water sold by fly-by-night entrepreneurs who perhaps import it from some neutralcountry that does not shoot down our fishermen or water seekers.
One good thing about these aberrations of men and nature is that, after a while, we accept what we cannot change and therefore cutour coat according to the cloth. The tailors are agog expecting afestival.
