TAMPA’S MOST EXPERIENCED RUNNING STORE STAFF
Whether we want to achieve something, to buy something or just be something, we strive to
make it the best. Being the best is a term relative to the time, the place and the person.
Getting the best running shoes in many stores does not mean buying the most expensive model they sell and then assuming you are getting the best shoe for your feet. Getting the right fit and shoe type generally will give you the most for you money. Getting the cheapest price for a shoe does not always work because it could be the wrong shoe for your feet and promote injury. Price does not dictate what is best for your foot. Remember as time goes on, your feet get flatter and longer so your size and width can change. Go to a running specialty store that has the most experienced salespeople and have them do a gait analysis on your feet, to check for pronation and supination, rotation of your ankles and alignment of your knees. These experienced salespeople, who should be runners, understand the features and benefits of each model of shoe and therefore will match the shoe with the needs of your feet.
Running your best does not mean breaking a personal record every time you run. To run your best, you have to vary your running routine and add some additional flexibility workouts. To run better, you have to run more. More may mean adding a speed workout, a tempo run and a long easy run. Easy running may mean long workouts where you run and walk for extended periods of time to build your heart aerobically. Running your best may also mean just running on a regular basis at a pace that is comfortable for you to maintain an adequate fitness level. I believe most of us want the best for our bodies and to do that in a beneficial way, you have to engage in some type of athletic or aerobic activity involving a lot of movement. The type of movement that works best for you is the activity that you will continue to do on a regular basis.
To exercise regularly, you need to take the best care of your feet. We have already discussed footwear but
there are a lot of accessory items available that will help your feet stay strong and healthy. Moisture management socks will help prevent blisters and provide long lasting, breathable comfort for your feet in any type of athletic footwear. If you have major structural issues with your feet, you need a functional orthotic custom fitted by a podiatrist. Most people can use an accommodative orthotic which can be very supportive. You should try on any shoes you plan to buy wearing your orthotics to make sure they work together properly. If you are on hard surfaces and don’t need a lot of support, get a cushioned insert which will help the shoe absorb the shock from running. If your heels are sore, try putting a thin wedge under your insert to shorten your foot strike. If you have plantar fasciitis, stabilize your foot with supportive inserts and soak your feet in cold water after exercising.
We all treat our bodies as we see fit, but we should make sure to do our research and consult professionals to do the best with the only body we have.

KNOWLEDGE by
Plantar Fasciitis: Make it go away! PF is the #1 foot injury suffered by walkers and runners worldwide. It is an insidious injury that doesn’t usually feel debilitating at first. As a result, many people ignore it for quite a while before seeking
treatment. The right shoes, inserts and sensible training regimens can prevent and even help heal PF, if you have it. But if you’ve been suffering from PF for a while, it can take an equally long time to recover. Don’t give up!
OVERVIEW
Join Club FITniche for just $30 and save $20 on ALL shoes for 2 years! See our accompanying ad for more benefits and details. This promotion excludes items of Brooks, Saucony and others which are subject to a unilateral minimum advertised price policy. Please check in-‐store or by phone to confirm actual prices of individual items we offer for sale to club members.
Plantar Fasciitis BEST PRACTICES THAT CAN HELP:
1. Don't walk barefoot on hard floors! 2. Don't wear typical flip-flops or other unsupportive shoes or flats. 3. Gently pull on your toes and knead your arch with your thumbs for
a few moments before getting out of bed each morning. 4. Slip into running shoes immediately upon getting out of bed. 5. Roll a frozen water bottle under your arch for 5-10 minutes, 2-3
times daily. 6. Gently stretch your calves and toes several times a day. 7. Take a regular anti-inflammatory for up to two weeks. Be sure it is
approved by your physician and agreeable with your stomach. 8. Significantly reduce or stop your running or walking regimen for
up to two weeks while doing the above. Then use the FITniche Comeback Plan to return to your normal training regimen.
9. Wear supportive shoes that are correct for your biomechanics. Purchase from a specialty store, like FITniche, that can match shoes to your gait and foot structure.
10. Wear semi-rigid to rigid inserts in all your shoes to support the arches. Again, let a specialty store like FITniche guide you through the selection process.
11. Use a foam roller or other self-massage device to regain elasticity in calves & arches, as both share the same insertion point beneath the heel.
12. Sleep in a night splint, so healing occurs in the stretched position.
A common source of heel pain is plantar fasciitis: a small tear, strain or inflammation of the tissue that makes up your arch. Symptoms If you experience a sharp, stabbing pain in the heel or arch first thing in the morning, at the beginning of runs and other workouts, or after sitting for long periods of time, you may have plantar fasciitis. Treatment Disclaimer If you don't start to find relief from these suggestions within a couple weeks, be sure to see a medical professional, as other more serious conditions can exhibit same or similar symptoms, and only a trained medical professional can actually diagnose conditions such as plantar fasciitis.

In a single therapy session, she was able to not only alleviate the pain, it was as if the injury never occurred."

What not to put on the internet after being injured
As most of you know, in addition to hanging around accomplished athletes, and announcing many of your events in Florida, I am also a practicing attorney special-izing in representation of athletes injured by others while training. I have found it increasingly difficult to keep my athlete clients from “shooting themselves in the foot” with use of the internet while their case is pending. There appears to be little or no filter with regard to what is posted for the world to see. Some things are admirable: All America designation by USAT ratings system, the new award now being seen earned by many of you through your Ironman success are just two examples.
However, when you’ve been injured by another, and have a pending claim, it’s best not to tell the internet world of your conquests. I know most of you would not be able to accomplish what you do without a high pain threshold; I know you can often still compete, and even be competitive after being injured. I know dwelling on the negative after injury is not in your DNA, so you focus on the positive, and ignore all else. This can, however, be very detrimental to a legitimate claim of injury when placed (by you via the internet) in the hands of the big bad insurance company attorney. If you think this doesn’t happen, think again. ANYTHING you post will be discoverable by insurance counsel. Don’t think for a minute its private only to your selected friends. They will find it and use it against you.
Example: a teenager with vast future potential, after a serious accident with a car that pulled suddenly into the bike lane and stopped to read details on a “for lease” sign couldn’t refrain from posting his upcoming race schedule on line, with appro-priate self reinforcement about how he would do. This was used against him in his case and definitely impacted his settlement. He was fifteen at the time, is now in college, and is not longer able to compete at all due to his injuries.
Often what we can accomplish after an injury is seen by us as a substantial change or loss of what we could do pre accident, but to the non athletes who will populate your jury, mean nothing. Example: to a jury of non athletes, a cyclist’s ability to ride 6,000 miles in a year equals little to no injury; but when that cyclist was riding 12,000 miles a year before the accident, that’s a 50% decrease in activity and self esteem. To post only the current number of 6,000 through social media could sig-nificantly harm the legal claim because it’s not the whole picture regarding impact of the accident.
Bottom line, be careful what you post using social media of any type; it can come back to haunt you and cost you dearly when legitimately damaged by another.

LET’S TALK SPORTS NUTRITION
Gene Ulishney BS HPE, LMTI, CPED, BOCPED
If you are into endurance sports such as triathlon, marathon or half marathon, you most likely have been at least introduced to sports nutrition. How serious you are regarding it is directly related to how much you actually know about what is available and how and when to use it. For simplicity’s sake, I’m going to focus on the brand GU which has the most complete line of sports nutrition products, and without artificial ingredients such as colors or flavors that may hinder performance. GU incorporates findings from studies done by the American College of Sports Medicine, one of the foremost sports research organizations in the world. As a side note, many GU products are even kosher.
Fueling is very important to maintain your energy level and reduce tissue breakdown during intense or endurance exercise. GU Energy Gel is an excellent first choice product. Maximum absorption is maintained by including Simple/Complex ingredients such as Fructose and Maltodextrin (1:2 concentration), quick and efficient fuel sources for both fast and long-term energy release. In doing so, you will reduce your chances running out of steam (and preventing hypoglycemia) due to muscle glycogen depletion. Besides replacing energy reserves, GU also includes Elecrolytes Sodium and Potassium which help prevent dehydration, reduce the risk of cramping and help stimulate thirst (Sodium). Added Branched Chain Amino Acids act as fuel, can lessen the effects of mental fatigue and promote protein synthesis to reduce muscle breakdown and lactic acid build up. Amino Acids also provide energy by aiding Carbohydrate absorption, help maintain concentration, and aid in recovery. Caffeine (0mg, 20mg or 40mg) is added to most GU flavors to boost performance, lower perceived effort, increase burning fat as fuel, increase alertness, and improve concentration. 40mg is about equivalent to a half cup of coffee. Contrary to popular opinion, Caffeine does not act as a diuretic during exercise. Also added is Chamomile and Ginger extract to help calm the stomach and prevent nausea. Recommended is one GU 15-20 minutes prior to exercise and then one every 40-45 minutes to maintain energy levels.
Roctane Energy Gel is premium grade GU when greater effort levels are required. It has much higher concentrations of Branched Chain Amino Acids, providing extra energy, reducing muscle damage and helping to maintain concentration, Electrolytes, plus an additional ingredient, OKG, which can promote recovery by protecting muscle tissue from damage. Depending on flavor, your choice is either 0mg or 35mg of Caffeine. One prior to your workout and then one every 40-45 minutes is recommended.
GU Chews are simply the chewable version of GU. For those who do not prefer the consistency of GU and would rather chew their Carbs, Amino Acids, Electrolytes, and Caffeine (Caffeine, if included in your favorite flavor). Four Chews every 40-45 minutes is recommended, and are equivalent to one GU.
GU Electrolyte Brew is low calorie, light-tasting, fast absorbing and refreshing. By adding Fructose/Maltodextrin (1:1) to your beverage actually allows your body to make better use of the fluid and Carbohydrates (when compared to water only). Added Electrolytes (Sodium and

GU Electrolyte Brew is low calorie, light-tasting, fast absorbing and refreshing. By adding Fructose/Maltodextrin (1:1) to your beverage actually allows your body to make better use of the fluid and Carbohydrates (when compared to water only). Added Electrolytes (Sodium and
Potassium) help maintain Electrolyte balance, reduces the risk of cramping and stimulates thirst (Sodium). Hydrate early and often.
Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Drink is premium GU Brew and designed for long, intense activities. It has all the same ingredients with the addition of Branched Chain Amino Acids Taurine (improves heart and skeletal muscle function), and Beta Alanine and Histidine (helps buffer pH for even less muscle breakdown as well as improved performance).
GU Electrolyte Tabs (pure hydration without the calories) are low calorie, easy to carry, and ready to drop into any bottle of water. Sweetened with natural Stevia, GU Electrolyte Tabs increase the desire to drink, with added Electrolytes, natural flavor, and taste. Helps prevent dehydration, reduces risk of cramping and stimulates thirst. They are especially good for pre-hydration, everyday hydration, and for anyone desiring less calories and Carbohydrates in their sports drink. Only 10 calories/tablet.
Electrolyte Capsules with Ginger Root (promotes a soothing sensation in the stomach and helps reduce nausea and dizziness), contain more of the essential Electrolytes an athlete’s body must replenish during long or intense workouts. An abundant amount of Sodium (the primary Electrolyte lost in sweat), Magnesium and Chloride (low abundance Electrolytes many athlete’s need during longer, sustained efforts), Vitamin B6 to help minimize dizziness and Vitamin D as an aid to performance when deficiencies in this vitamin are present. Sodium, Magnesium and Chloride are scientifically proven to be the only Electrolytes required during exercise. They function not only to maintain Electrolyte balance and prevent cramping but to maintain plasma volume by helping the body hold onto water. Without adequate water, dehydration causes the blood to thicken, which slows blood flow and decreases oxygen utilization, sweat rate, muscle strength and performance. Adequate Electrolytes also prevent a very serious condition called hyponatremia, a condition characterized by a low blood sodium level. Hyponatremia is caused by severely diluting the Electrolyte balance of the body by only drinking plain water while exercising and sweating heavily. This can lead to seizure, coma and death. Hyponatremia can be identified by weight gain during exercise.
Recovery Brew is a great tasting drink with premium quality ingredients to help quickly replenish energy stores and rebuild muscles after intense workouts. Includes an optimal blend of Carbs to replenish Glycogen stores, quality Whey Protein Isolate for optimal absorption for muscle repair, Branched Chain Amino Acids Glutamine and Arginine to support a strong immune system and accelerate recovery, Electrolytes Sodium and Potassium to support proper hydration, and anti-oxidant Vitamins C and E to combat tissue breakdown. Protein, Carbs and Electrolytes are most needed within 30 minutes after workout when muscle cells are most receptive to nutrition.
I hope you now have an idea of what all the hype is about regarding proper sports nutrition. Work with it and find the combinations that work best for you. Keeping the body functioning as optimally as possible will enhance your workouts, delay the onset of fatigue, decrease fatigue-associated injury and improve overall performance.

Movement is Medicine for the Mind Lynn Gray, M.S. – RRCA Run Coach
I am a long distance runner. It has now been over 45 years of distance walking and running for me including ninety plus marathons, and I am still moving physically forward. I frequently am asked why so many marathons, so many miles, and time spent moving. My answer is, and was, to relieve stress and lift my moods during times of depression. During my college years both stress and anxiety were gaining on me as was my weight. Walking briskly outside each day always made me feel so much calmer, focused, and less irritable. Equally as important, brisk walking and later running definitely increased my sense of well-being and put me into a “runners high”. I have been hooked ever since.
So the question is how much forward movement is enough? Can a walk around the block or running a mile per day decrease stress and increase a sense of well-being? Probably not. However, a brisk walk or easy run for about 35 minutes a day or more, five days per week definitely will lift the mood and reduce stress. It is the duration, time on your feet and continual steady breathing that calms the muscles, the mind, and consequently relaxes fight or flight reactions, frustrating thinking, and gives a brief form of “escape” from the negative forces of life. You are in fact now in charge of your well-being due to taking on a daily walk or run.
Recognizing stress is not difficult; although admitting you should face it and find ways to intervene the reaction can be daunting. A stressful person find themselves frequently anxious, having a high heart rate, with high blood pressure which consequently can produce headaches, insomnia, muscle tension, frequent illnesses, alcohol abuse, overeating, and other maladies. Stressors are many. Most cannot be ignored such as those situations which are work related; family related, from a death, a divorce, a personal slow illness such as cancer, and on the list goes.
How can we lessen our degree of stress? Walking or running increases blood flow to the brain which is mentally and physically stimulating. This increase of energy is immediate. This new energy allows you to cope with stress more effectively, and gradually the muscles and the heart rate becomes increasingly rhythmic. What follows is peace of mind. Thus the actual physical stress of brisk movement increases your resistance to mental distress. Completing your hour of walking now has given you a sense of hardiness and will better enable both mind and body to handle daily stressors that sometimes can mentally paralyze your thought process.

Stress and anxiety can also bring us closer to an even greater mental challenge; that of depression. Major changes in life, such as a disease, injury, a broken relationship, being laid off from your job can challenge you in such a way that it becomes hard to “cope” with day to day activities and can lead to chronic feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. Those mental and/or physical traumas can bring on depression. Depression affects your neurochemistry because there is less serotonin and norepinephrine being produced. These are chemicals in the brain which are responsible for our “good” moods. After losing both my parents within two years, I suffered depression and at times felt mentally stagnant. Intellectually I realized that running outside does increase serotonin and endorphins; the chemistry which makes us feel better. That was when my marathon practice and workouts took hold. My mood was elevated by long distance running and those workouts became my best friend so to speak.
Less dramatically, there are others reasons why both walking and running makes a depressed or anxious person feel better, especially when joining others. It is a well-known fact that “girl talk” produces endorphins, so those of us who work out together have much happier outcomes, long after the walk or run. Both walking and running give you a time to escape and reflect on challenges and stressful situations. You can resolve your problems with a thoughtful approach versus fretting about them hour by hour. Taking a long walk also can help you recall good memories and better times which will help your mood become more positive. Physiologically, those who suffer from physical disease have a weakened immune system which makes one more susceptible to illnesses, Study after study reveal that 35 minutes to an hour of vigorous walking or running will increase bone density, lower heart rate, increase metabolic rate, help keep weight in check, all of which adds to physical strength.
In closing, we must remember to begin with small doses of vigorous walking or easy running. Set your table for lifetime fitness and success bouts of exercise. Begin setting duration goals, but keep them attainable, easy, and varied so boredom is prevented. Become an outside person and encourage others to join you. Always remember, that you may not want to take “your walk or run” today; but when you finish I guarantee, you will feel physically and mentally better. This statement is from someone who has walked and ran for over forty years. And remember guys and gals…doing it together is an instant mood lifter so take that first step now!
This article is based on years of personal and professional experience with coaching both men and women of all ages, health conditions, and environmental settings which include: schools, corporate workplaces, Moffitt Cancer Center, and a diverse amount of individuals with “pre-existing” conditions.
