Hi everyone,
It’s June and I can’t believe we are already halfway through the year, where has the time gone?
June is fair and fete season, and it’s also Father’s Day this month, so there’s plenty to do this month and many great causes to support, all we need is for the sun to shine. We’ve had so much rain recently, I’m desperate to put to my boots in the cupboard and get the fl ip fl ops out! Surely it’s time we had the opportunity to enjoy some summer warmth.
This month marks seven years since I put my fi rst edition together for Aldington and delivered it to the printer. I sat on my patio with a cup of tea wondering what on earth I’d done, I was fi lled with trepidation at the thought of so many people reading my words and viewing my work. Seven years on and I have no regrets whatsoever. There have been many ups and own downs along the way, and very little quality time spent with my family in the early days, taking a holiday is a massive challenge, but it’s all been worth it.
I feel that I’ve made so many new friends, both readers and advertisers. There have been so many long chats on the phone or via email, it’s a wonder the magazines ever make it to the printer. Thank you so much for making the experience such a positive one, I feel extremely humbled by the feedback I receive. And long may it continue.

Delphiniums are the most stately of the cottage garden plants and they need to be treated like royalty if you’re going to get the best out of them. Make sure to provide them with good rich soil, watch out for slugs and snails decimating the early growth. Then make sure you provide supports for the fl owers – there’s nothing more disheartening than seeing a towering spire crashing to the ground. If this does happen, however, you may get another fl ush of blooms later in the summer.
One of my favourite plants Geum ‘Mrs Bradshaw’ is blooming at the moment. It’s cheerful deep orange fl owers contrast well with purple Alliums and the frothy Lime green fl owers of Achemilla mollis. If you prefer a more demure colour mix, try the hardy Geranium ‘Johnson’s Blue’, or the longer fl owering ‘Rozanne’ near the

It’s my favourite summer month; the spring-green freshness is still there and the fl owers are bright and breezy, but it’s also the month of endless grass cutting and furious weeding, as the surge of growth is relentless, like a rising green tide. I much prefer this to August though, when the tide begins to turn and there’s that dusty (or thundery) lull of not much happening.

lovely pink and white Peony ‘Bowl of Beauty’ and the tall pale lemon spire of Verbascum Gainsborough’. All of these are charming, unfussy plants, but unfortunately the same can’t be said for the mainstay of the June garden - the Rose. Roses are greedy plants and prone to many unsightly affl ictions. Keep them looking good by feeding with a proprietory Rose fertiliser, watching out for the fi rst signs of pests and diseases and dead-heading to prolong the display. Roses are the offi cial birthday fl ower for June and, probably because they’re such fusspots, I have to admit that I fi nd them at their loveliest in a bouquet.
One of the great things about June is that you can stay out in the garden until late in the evening, but there’s a slight poignancy too, as after the summer solstice on the 21st,, the nights begin to draw in again - so we must make the most of it.

Since retiring from competition my world has taken off in many directions. You may think I’d have a lot more time to myself, “not a bit of it“ there’s no peace for the wicked, so to speak. Still there’s a lot more work to be done! My companion will be depending on me to continue helping to keep the house in order. Many visitors drop in to say a word and some may give gifts and treats, or an invitation to enjoy the outside world. This thought has been running through my mind and it gets me feeling frisky and ready to rumble. Stretching my muscles with physical activity will surely give me time to explore new horizons, meet new friends and spread my friendly aura as far and wide as possible. Retreating occasionally to a cosy corner will keep me refreshed for all that lies ahead.
The fact is that I’ve become a hit with a goup of neighbourhood children, which has come as something of a surprise. My presence at local events makes it all the more enjoyable for those little ones. Having a collection of animal friends around has given them the chance to interact with us. I guide my companion on ideas to make the most of my current appeal, as children are not the only ones who will warm to us. The challenge is to educate on how to get us and children working together and eleviate potential problems. Why educate a dog? you may ask, and there are many reasons. We, like humans, are not born knowing what to do, think of some of the things you might do if no one had taught you any manners... perhaps eating with your hands, pushing people out of the way, or interrupting conversations might come to mind. It’s the same with us, we will develop behaviours of our own if not taught otherwise. We might playbite or jump as a way of greeting, some of us might challenge anyone who tries to discipline us. Others may be very fearful, a behaviour that often results in biting. Through education both you and I can prevent, and eliminate these problems. We all have individual personalities and we must address that. While training it’s very important to establish a relationship based upon respect, by respecting humans I can learn not to fear them. Remember through proper education we both can have a much more enjoyable, and less frustrating relationship together.
Design and decorating
Width is the crucial issue in hallways, and unless you’re prepared to do some substantial building work and remove a wall, you’re probably stuck with what you have. To increase the feeling of space in a narrow hallway, use pale colours and add large mirrors (ideal for checking your refl ection just before you leave the house, too). Keep the space as clear as possible by adding only the most essential items of slender storage furniture, and using the full height of your walls rather than encroaching on fl oor space. If, on the other hand, you have a large and spacious hallway – lucky you! Think of it as an extra living space and make the most of it by adding a sofa or chairs, bookcases or
a writing desk. For plenty of inspirational ideas, see Hallways, Corridors and Staircases by Leslie Geddes-Brown, with fabulous photography by Christopher Drake (Ryland, Peters & Small, £25). Whatever the size of your hall, consider it as a linking room and make sure your choice of decorative schemes works well when doorways to other rooms are open. If you have chosen a pale colour scheme for the walls, woodwork could be slightly darker for interest. Halls that see a lot of wear and tear could be painted with an extra-tough paint, or clad with tongue-and-groove panelling, tiles or hard-wearing wallpaper.

Fabulous fl ooring
Halls and stairs are high-traffi c areas, so ensure that your fl ooring is non-slip, durable, resistant to dirt and simple to clean – if you can mop it, so much the better. Stone, ceramic or quarry tiles, or colourful Victorian encaustic tiles, are all easy to care for, while solid wooden boards or parquet require only some regular polishing or waxing. Cheap wood laminates may not last too long in such a well-used space. Lino or vinyl can look impressive, too, especially when laid in patterns. Carpet, however, is more problematic as you’ll need to choose a colour or pattern that won’t show the dirt – and make sure that it is suitable for a hallway: an 80:20 twist classifi ed for heavy domestic use is often the best.
Cosy and bright
Under-fl oor heating is ideal for narrow halls, but do check that it will be compatible with your fl ooring. On the other hand, if there’s room, you could opt for eye-catching radiators, perhaps a period-style cast-iron column or an eye-catching modern type.
Hall lighting doesn’t need to be bright enough for reading, but it should be welcoming and lead the eye into your home: it could be an amazing chandelier (given high enough ceilings) or a series of recessed ceiling downlights. In a narrow hall, avoid wall lights – they will just act as obstacles.

cleaners. The type of storage you choose is always best moulded around what you need to store, how much space it will take and how frequently you need to access it. The main choice is between built-in, hidden storage or open, display-type storage. The former is best when space is tight – slender fl oor-to-ceiling cupboards with plain doors, (perhaps painted the same colour as the walls, or even mirrored to maximise light) ranked along one wall, will hold masses yet be hardly noticeable. On the other hand, you could make a statement with an eclectic selection of free-standing cupboards, sideboards, tables, benches, dressers, baskets, shelves and so on. If necessary, fi t hooks or pulleys high up on walls to hold bikes, and perhaps a coat stand or row of pegs for everyday coats and bags. Umbrella stands and boot racks are ideal for spacious, country-style halls. Somewhere to keep post and keys is a good idea, too, whether a bowl and rack on a dresser or a small, wall-mounted cupboard and set of hooks. If you have lots of books or delicate items to display, a shelf running the length of the hallway above head height can be extremely useful. For times when space is really hard to fi nd, it is even possible to build storage drawers into the treads of a wooden staircase.

In December 2010 yet another failed pub in a very poor state of repair went to auction. It had broken windows, no heating and rain coming through the roof. However Bob and Colleen Leatherdale could see something beautiful in this old place. They bought the Peace and Plenty and with the help of their family and local tradesmen began the transformation from ugly duckling to beautiful swan! Lovingly upgrading and renovating the Peace and Plenty has seen installation of gas central heating, all new windows, and many fl oors and walls replaced. The kitchens have undergone complete gutting and transformation, as have the toilets! They have renovated and cleaned from top to bottom! The old function rooms are currently being transformed into beautiful boutique style Bed and Breakfast accommodation with all the mod cons you could ever need. There will be 3 rooms, all with en suites, showers and two ensuites also have roll top baths. One room will have a magnifi cent four poster bed, the second a beautiful French carved walnut bed, the third will be fl exible, so either twin or superking bed. The Peace and Plenty’s sunny garden is now safely enclosed and there are British giant rabbits and guinea pigs to delight children and adults alike.
People may wonder “What is the Peace and Plenty now?” I would describe it as a modern pub, much like you would fi nd on
the continent. You can call in for anything from coff ee and tea to a pint of bitter or local Biddendens cider, or choose from a good selection of wines and spirits. Bob’s food is genuinely homemade, choose anything from cakes, sandwiches and afternoon tea to cooked meals such as Steak and Ale Pie, pan fried Rye Bay Plaice as well as a great selection of vegetarian food. Not forgetting the great Sunday roast dinners and homemade desserts!
Over the last 2 years the opening times have varied whilst Bob and Colleen have tried to get a feel for the business requirements, managed all the changes and still have a family life! Therefore they keep people informed and up to date via their website and the Village Directory. Bob and Colleen are very keen for people to come and have a look at what exactly has been keeping them so busy the last 2 years therefore when you book a table with us you will qualify for our wine off er “Pay for two large glasses of wine and get the rest of the bottle free”. The Peace and Plenty is the place to be for romantic meals, family celebrations, group or club get togethers, just chilling or try one of the poetry open mic evenings for a taste of something diff erent. Pan-fried Mackerel Pan-fried Mackerel Fillet with Lemon Fillet with Lemon Spring VegetablesSpring Vegetables
Heat the butter in a sauté pan or deep frying pan. Gently cook the shallot for about 5 minutes until it starts to soften and becomes translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another couple of minutes.
Add the vegetable mix, cutting anything large like carrots, to match the size of the other vegetables. Stir for a minute or so, pour in the stock and lemon juice and add the zest. Season, then cover and cook for 5 minutes.
Spoon in the creme fraiche and dill and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
Heat another frying pan with the olive oil. Slice the mackerel fi llet in half lengthways, taking out any bones you may fi nd. Season the fi sh then pan-fry for 2 minutes on each side.
Serve the mackerel on a bed of the vegetables with plenty of lemon wedges and some new potatoes.

Our family farm spans across part of the Romney Marsh and the adjacent escarpment of Aldington and Bonnington. The Romney Sheep have been in the family for at least six generations, possibly more and our current numbers are circa 1,000 ewes lambing in the traditional months of March and April.
As Romney wool is c o n s i d e re d to be one of the most v e r s a t i l e fl eeces my husband and
I decided to set up an exciting diversifi cation project to have our fl eeces transformed. We take our fl eeces to small UK weavers, who hand processes, then spin and weave our yarn into beautiful knee rugs and throws which have a unique quality attributable to the Romney Sheep. We also have our own brand of Wool Fat Soap and Hand and body lotion made from the lanolin.
The wool is a demi-lustre of excellent quality and staple, shearing a heavy even fl eece, and is considered one of the best British wools, highly suitable for the manufacture of cloths, blankets, knitting yarns and felts. It is desirable as an ‘improver’ fi bre for quality carpet manufacture. Romney Wool is a natural cream colour, semi-lustrous with a long staple,
often used in knitwear, yarn and cloth. Today wool represents only 5% of the worlds fi bre production (the remaining being synthetics and cotton), however it is becoming a more popular choice as it is a renewable resource and a natural product.
Using our n a t u r a l s e m i -l u s t r o u s wool which is so soft and durable we aim to add an original fl air to any home with our range.
In 2008 we acquired a small fl ock of British M e r i n o sheep from a local retiring c o u p l e . Using the luxurious, fi ne, high quality wool from our fl ock with our Romney fl eece has enabled us to expand to our premium range of baby blankets and scarves.
Besides being a renewable and natural resource, the fl eece provides valuable lanolin. Romney Marsh Wools use this benefi cial product and we have a lovely range of soaps, hand and body lotion and shampoos; lightly fragranced and creamy. Only the highest quality ingredients, not tested on animals, create gently soothing and smoothing lotions and soaps, all of which are long lasting and hydrating.
Since 2008 we have been to many local craft fairs and higher end events such as Country Living where we won ‘Best Product’ at their Christmas Fair 2011. I used to think that when the kids left school they’d be self-suffi cient grownups and I wouldn’t have to worry about them anymore. Hah! Let me tell you about my mornings.
Three days a week my son, who is 19, goes to college less than 20 miles away. But the free bus winds around every village and takes an hour and a half. He has to catch it at 7.30, which means leaving the house at 7.25. Now if that was me I’d be up at 6.30 to give myself plenty of time for breakfast and a shower. But not my son. In his opinion, breakfast and a shower are for wusses and he can put off leaving bed until 7.20. Which is all well and good, if he can make it.
But for a teenager, waking up is hard to do. So he sets his alarm to go off three times at fi ve-minute intervals between 6.40 and 6.55. And if the fi rst blast isn’t enough to drag him back from dreamland, it certainly does the trick for me. I’m wide awake, waiting for the second blast and the third. The wait between blasts is bad enough, but what comes next is worse.
He inhabits the attic; the parental bedroom is directly underneath. I can hear everything. Or rather, I can’t hear anything. I can’t hear
him heave himself reluctantly out of bed. I can’t hear him stumbling around looking for something clean to wear among the piles of dirty clothes. I can’t hear him trudge down the attic stairs to the bathroom. I can’t hear the bathroom door open and close and the bolt slam home.
I’m on a knife-edge. Is he going to make it or isn’t he? If he misses the free college bus he’ll have to take two ordinary buses, pay more than £5, and be late. Eventually I can’t bear it any more. I don’t actually have to get up – my offi ce is all of three paces from the foot of our stairs; but I can’t stick it out. I rap tentatively on his door. Only now he’s 19 and a man I can’t bawl him out for the lazy idle git that he is. Instead, I have to say something neutral like: “Everything under control up there?” I still receive the same old teenage mouthful back, though.
Now I know perfectly well that I should let him stew. If he can’t get up in time for the free bus, then let him pay. He’s a grown man now and ought to take the consequences of his own actions, or rather, inactions. He’ll never learn otherwise. But it’s easier said than done. I challenge any parent not to look at that great hulking thing looming in the doorway
and not see an image of their little boy aged four.
Not that this kind of sentimentality would fi nd much favour with him. He insists that he’s grown up and can do all the things that grownups do. He drinks, he smokes, he stays out all night and we can’t stop him. Not that we would want to. But I can’t help thinking that his claim to adulthood would have a little more credibility if he embraced the downsides, too. Like picking up his dirty laundry more frequently than every fortnight. Like washing up occasionally. Like vacuuming his bedroom and even changing his sheets.
And like getting up in the morning without causing me a nervous breakdown!

After a busy day, an elderly friend of mine settled down in his train
from Waterloo for a nap as far as his destination at Winchester, when the chap sitting near him hauled out his mobile and
started up:-

Dear Editor, I’d like to reply to the short article about childhood in the 50’s and 60’s. I was brought up then, and it is amusing to read the tongue in cheek articles, but it is worth remembering, that it wasn’t a rosy time for many members of the community. -The mentally ill and people with learning diffi culties were shut away in big institutions and largely forgotten. Society didn’t cater for the physically disabled either. - Suicides and homosexuals were criminalised. Imagine the awful and terrible despair of deep depression and blackness, and not being able to talk to anyone, and if you couldn’t cope any longer, you were denied a Christian burial, and your family was shamed.-In a male dominated society, women were strongly discriminated against, poorly paid, and many endured the most appalling sexual, physical and mental abuse. They was no mechanism for convicting the abusers, unless women had the courage to press charges, which after years of abuse, not many of them had. There was also nowhere to go, to escape the abuse, pain and terror, unless they had a sympathetic mother or sister. - Children endured the most cruel and desperate sexual and physical abuse from those in authority, and if they had the courage to complain, no-one believed them, accepting the respectability of the abusers. -I remember abject and terrible poverty, which we don’t see nowadays. I remember going to school in the snow, accompanied by youngsters in broken down shoes or plimsolls, with scruff y, ill fi tting coats. I remember blue legs, and knees and lips so chapped with the cold, they were bleeding. I remember my mother having one of my sisters friends to dinner, mainly because it was the only cooked meal she had in the six week holidays. With feckless, inadequate parents, she lived on bread and jam, and visibly deteriorated during the holidays, when she didn’t have school dinners. -No, kids didn’t wear cycle helmets, but they still came off their bikes, and were killed or horribly crippled for the rest of their lives. In the early 60’s I remember being told, that 19 people a day died on our roads. 50 years later, with 50 times the traffi c, the fi gure is down to 10 a day.
- It is fashionable to scoff at “health and safety” and government interference in our lives, but until 20 or 30 years ago, we had the most awful mortality and morbidity fi gures in the western world. We had the highest fi gures for heart disease, strokes, cancer, and industrial accidents, especially in construction and farming. We badly needed legislation and government action, and a few more rules. Yes, my husband and I did grow up in a gold-en age. We had happy, stable childhoods, with free healthcare, and hope and aspiration. At school you could work hard, and go to a gram-mer school and then on the university, or join a profession, regardless of your background. If you failed your 11+ , as I did, you went to a marvellous brand new secondary school, full of practical classrooms, opportunity, a new gym and about 30 acres of playing fi elds. All ages are a paradox, full of good and bad, happy times, and heaps of problems that need sorting out. Perhaps Charles Dickens was right when he said “It was the best of times, and the worst of times” as every age probably is. Mrs June Gooch, New Romney.
