DESIGN SOLUTION: TWO ORGANIC SHAPES MOVING IN OPPOSITE BUY EQUAL DIRECTIONS, ONE STEREO-TOMIC IN NATURE WHILE THE OTHER TECTONIC IN ESSENCE. THE LONG AXIS BETWEEN THE SOLIDS CRE-ATES A NEGATIVE SPACE USED BY THE EVER-CHANG-ING SAND DUNES IN THE DESERT TO MOVE THROUGH.

SUSTAINABILITY: DESIGN BASED IN SOLAR ANGLES PROVIDES THE BUILD-ING WITH PASSIVE SOLAR COOLING AND HEATING DURING THE SUMMER AND WINTER.DESIGN SOLUTION: TWO FLOORS, ONE PUBLIC AND OTHER PRIVATE, DIVIDE THE PROGRAM BETWEEN RESEARCHERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. STRUCTURAL SOLUTIONS ARE ACCOMPLISHED BY THE USE OF AN 8 GRID COLUMN SYSTEM. THIS, PLUS THE AXIAL ORGANIZATION IN THE PLANS PROVIDES AN OPEN AND FLEXIBLE SPACE. A DOUBLE HEIGHT AREA WAS DESIGNED IN ORDER TO CRE-ATE A LIMINAL SPACE BETWEEN THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE AREAS.

CONCEPTUAL APPROACH: AS A LANDMARK ENTRANCE TO UNM CAMPUS, THE BUILDING ACTS AS A ‘LUMINARIA’ (NATIVE LIGHT FIXTURE), AIMING FOR GRAN-DEUR BOTH AT NIGHT AND DAY. DESIGN SOLUTION: THE PROGRAM IS DIVIDED INTO FIVE MAIN FLOORS: FOUR WHICH ACTED AS PUBLIC AREAS AND ONE PRIVATE ADMINISTRATIVE SUITE. A CENTRAL VERTICAL CIRCULA-TION ALSO SERVES AS A LIGHT TUBE WHICH DIRECTS LIGHT TO THE INNER SPACES IN EACH FLOOR. AN OPEN FLOOR PLAN IS ACHIEVED BY THE USE OF A COLUMN GRID WHICH PROVIDES FLEXIBILITY AND VARIOUS OPEN AREAS. A TWO-LAYER SKIN SYSTEM CONTRIBUTES WITH A VARIETY OF FRAMED VIEWS AND LIGHT PATTERS IN THE INSIDE, AS WELL AS AN INTERESTING AND INNOVATIVE LOOK FROM THE OUTSIDE.

CONCEPTUAL [SELF]IMPOSED RULES : AFTER EXTENSIVE ANALYSIS OF HUMAN DENSITY FLOWS AND TRAJECTORIES, A SET OF RULES WAS DEVELOPED THROUGH WHICH FORM WOULD EMERGE AS A BI-PRODUCT OF IMPOSED LIMITATIONS. DESIGN SOLUTION: THE SET OF RULES WAS BASED ON DIFFERENT DENSITY TRAJECTORIES WITHIN THE SITE. IT CONTAINED TWO LEVELS OF COMPLEX-ITY: MAJOR SITE PATHS AND MINOR PATHS WITHIN. THESE TWO SPATIAL TRAJECTORIES SHAPED THE OVER-ALL VOLUME FORMING A CLUSTER OF PROGRAM-BASED PAVILIONS.

LOCATION: ALBUQUERQUE, NM, USAPROGRAM: MULTIUSE+FLEXIBLE THEATRE SPACECONCEPT: ROTATION OF FORMAL PARAMETERS OF DYNAMISM
CONCEPTUAL APPROACH: WITH EXISTING LIMITA-TIONS OF A STATIC, CONSTRAINT SITE, DYNAMIC CHARACTERIS-TICS WERE ACHIEVED BY A 45 DEGREE SHIFT IN THE MAIN VOLUME OF THE PROGRAM. BROAD VISI-BILITY AND FLEXIBILITY WERE ALSO ATTAINED.DESIGN SOLUTION: A MAIN VOLUME ROTATED 45 DEGREES FROM THE STATIC AXIS OF THE SITE SERVES AS THE BLACKBOX, WITH EVERY OTHER PROGRAM SPACES ORBITING AROUND IT. AN OPEN FRONT FAÇADE INVITES PUBLIC FROM THE STREETS BEYOND. HIERARCHICAL VOLUMES AND PLANES PROVIDE HIGHLY DYNAMIC SPACES. THE MAIN PROGRAM SPACE IS ALWAYS VISIBLE. A BLACKBOX WITHIN A CRYSTAL BOX.

USES: THE CONCEPT:BATHTUB SERVES ITS MAIN PURPOSE OF BEING A USABLE BATHTUB FOR USE IN THEATRE PERFORMANCES. ITS POSITION CAN BE ALTERED IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE VARIOUS TASKS.
