Because the treating physicians had varying opinions as to the usefulness of this procedure, not all patients received lumbar drainage even when the meningitis was deemed to be severe.
The drainage level for the CSF collection chamber and the speed of CSF drainage were adjusted primarily to achieve a maximal CSF drainage of 80 mL per 8 hour shift and preferably an intracranial pressure of <10 cm of water.
