As a result of many factors, the:Unemployment rate was at 25% Banks went out of businessEveryone lost moneyLong lines outside of job officesFood pantries and soup kitchens were a common sightThe Great Depression: 1929-1940

Technology and EntertainmentPeople often went out to see movies with their friends and families.

When at home, people spent a lot of time playing board games and watching black and white TV.

Technology and Entertainment Radio was rapidly becoming a mass media. Families and friends would congregate around the radio to listen to the news, reports and even soap operas in the evening.

TVs, however small, were gaining in popularity- though very few households were lucky enough to have them.

1930s ClothingThe Great Depression began in 1929 and ended in the early 1940s. This had a huge affect on women and mens fashion.

Changing clothes twice a day became unfashionable and women were often mending or sewing their clothes in order to wear them longer.

Men were in suits as much as possible and women were often found in dresses.

Social CustomsPeople often spoke of baseball, dancing, and politics- anything to get their attention away from the Great Depression.

Etiquette: Appropriate Conduct

Girls were to be girls and boys were to be boys.
