PrefaceOrmazabal's decades of experience in the research, design, development, production and installation of medium voltage switchgear and switching devices has made us a global leading provider of gas-insulated medium voltage switchgears (GIS). Today around 1,300,000 Ormazabal MV functional units have been installed in the electrical networks of over 100 electrical utilities and 600 wind farms in more than 110 countries.

With the first ga, the most robust and compact series of block switchgears (RMU) was introduced in 1985 under the name ga-24 for secondary distribution networks of up to 24 kV.

Due to the requirements of our customers, the modular version of the ga (then called GE) was developed in 1993. In 2001, this type was replaced with the gae series of switchgears.

The gae switchgear series has since been continuously improved to address the needs of our customers and markets. Today more than 200,000 gae system functional units have been installed in more than 80 countries.

SafetyProtection for people, the environment and electrical installations.

Special attention paid to the personal safety of the operators and the general public.

Arc-fault protection Both the gae1250 and the gae1250kmax are protected against arc-fault according to IEC 62271-200:

• gae1250: IAC AFL 20 kA, 1 s

• gae1250kmax: IAC AFL 25 kA, 1 s

All high voltage areas fulfil the requirements of arc resistance according to IEC 62271- 200 Appendix A Criteria 1 to 5.

In principle, the internal arc classification IAC AFL is always valid for the gas tank and the cable connection compartment.

A rear absorber channel is optionally available on request, which enables the installation of the switchgear in connection with metal absorbers on a closed floor. By means of this option, the pressure value inside the switchgear room can be reduced by approximately 60%, and additionally it is passive & maintenance free.

Hermetically sealedOperational safety is ensured by the hermetic sealing of the primary components, which protect against environmental influences such as dirt, moisture, etc. The drive parts are low maintenance and accessible from the outside.

InterlocksThe gae1250 and the gae1250kmax have mechanical and electrical interlocks according to IEC 62271-200 to provide a safe and reliable operation.

Interlocks prevent unsafe operations:

• The switching devices are interlocked

• The cable connection compartment can be opened only if the earthing switch is closed

Key componentsVacuum circuit breakerAll modular cubicles of type lsv in the gae1250 and gae1250kmax series have a compact, three-pole circuit breaker with vacuum tubes based on the axial magnetic field technology.

Two solid copper dies - one fixed and one movable - are located inside the vacuum tube and provide the connection to the connection points. When switching off, an arc is generated in the vacuum chamber from the time of contact separation. After reaching the suppression distance, the arc is extinguished at the zero crossing.

All vacuum circuit breakers are designed, developed and manufactured by Ormazabal, and certified according to the IEC 62271-100 standard.

ExpandabilityThe gae1250 and gae1250kmax cubicles are easily extended on both sides and can be combined with each other as well as with the gae630 series.

Three-position circuit breaker In the three-position circuit breaker, the arc is extinguished under SF6 by means of a quenching coil.

During the separation process, the arc induces a current in the quenching coil. This in turn generates a magnetic field and the arc starts rotating due to the forces of the magnetic field. Subsequently, the arc is extinguished at the zero crossing.

Ormazabal has been providing three-position circuit breakers for more than ten years.

HV compartmentThe medium voltage compartment

This is a gas-tight welded tank made from stainless steel, which houses all the live parts including the busbars. The incoming and outgoing fields as well as the connection of the fuses are implemented via cast resin bushings that are individually tested to comply with the maximum permissible partial discharge values < 2pC. Each pressure vessel is equipped with a bursting disc.

Gas pressure indicators

Each HV compartment has a pressure gauge for checking the overpressure. This ensures the control of operational safety.

Pressure switch

For remote monitoring, each gas tank can optionally be equipped with a pressure switch. The bottom switching point corresponds to the transition to the red measuring range on the gas leakage indicator. In addition, pressure switches with an additional switching point for warning are available.

Driving mechanismDrives

The robust spring or vessel drives for the disconnector, earth and power switches are located above the pressure vessel. While the spring drives are maintenance free, vessel drives of the transformer outputs and the circuit breakers should be switched at least once after 10 years.

Operation

The switching devices are operated by drive shafts fed out and integrated in the mimic diagram. These include switching levers, 1x load or power switch, 1x earthing switch. Conventional operation is ensured by the clearly structured mimic diagram and the simple turn drives.

Cable connection compartmentCable connection compartments are always available for all switchgear and always have an arc-fault resistant design. They are separated from each other by steel partition walls. Inspections or work can be carried out even when the connection zone of the neighbouring panels is live. The front covers are by default interlocked against the corresponding earthing switch. The front cover can be opened only if the earthing switch is engaged. If required, an inverse interlock can be supplied, too. This prevents the corresponding load-break switch from being switched onto a live busbar with voltage if the connection zone is open (front cover removed). The switching device can be operated only with the front cover and fastener closed. The earthing switch at the outgoing cable is not incorporated in this interlock and can also be switched even with an open connection zone (necessary for cable testing).

Deeper front covers are available to allow for double cable connection systems. Vacuum breaker panels can be fitted with up to four cables per phase (A2 version).

Cable fixing irons

The cable fixing irons consist of galvanised folded sheet-metal parts. They are due to a special screw construction adjustable in height and depth, so all end terminals used for SF6 systems can be used and the cables can be easily attached by means of cable clamps without anything else needed.

Relay cabinetThe relay cabinet is located in the upper part of the switchgear and is independent of the medium voltage compartments. It is designed for installation of protection relays and metering and control devices.

All commercially available protection relays can be installed in the relay cabinet of the gae1250 and gae1250kmax type switchgear.

The possibilities range from transformer-powered protection relays to combined high-quality protection and automation systems as well as typical relays that require external power supply.

Low-energy triggers at 0.5 and 0.1 Ws are available for the transformer-operated protection relays. The combination of protection relays and transformers are specially tested.

General protocols and interfaces such as Profibus DP, Modbus, IEC 60870-5-103, IEC 0-60870-5-104, IEC 60870-5-101 and IEC 61850 can be delivered with the appropriate relay. The installation is done in the relay cabinet relevant to the switchgear. The protection relays can optionally be installed behind each drive mechanism housing.

If parameter sets are supplied by the customer, these are recorded directly in the factory.

For protection applications, encapsulated toroidal current transformers are installed round the outer cone bushings according to the IEC 60044-1 standard. In some cases it is possible for the toroidal transformer in the cable connection compartment to be attached to the cable fixing iron.

Furthermore, single pole metal-encapsulated voltage transformers can be mounted directly on the optional pressure vessels under vacuum breaker cubicles for protection and metering functions in accordance with IEC 60044-2.

Depending on the technical specifications and customer requirements, gae1250 and gae1250kmax type switchgears can be equipped with protection relays from proven international and local manufacturers. To maintain optimal service quality, such integration is subjected to 100% quality tests in our factory before shipping.

Capacitive voltage indicators To determine the absence of voltage or to perform a voltage test according to IEC 61243-5 each cubicle can be equipped with the following voltage indicator systems:

Standard VDS voltage indicator bar of type Wega 3

The capacitive voltage indicator Wega 3 is integrated in the drive front bezel.

The Wega 3 is a capacitive voltage indicator with three-phase permanent display.

This device indicates by displaying lightning arrows on the integrated display that there is voltage on the test point of the capacitive insulated support.

The wiring of the voltage indication ledge can be designed for the 10-20 kV rated operating voltage range. The minimum and maximum values of the standard are met for these voltage ranges in the standard system.

Repeated adjustment when changing the rated operating voltage in this range is not necessary. 6 kV or lower rated operating voltage can be implemented in a special solution. The live contact sockets are protected against accidental contact.

Integrated voltage indicators (IVDS) CAPDIS system from Kries:

CAPDIS is a capacitive voltage indicator with three-phase continuous indication and permanent self-monitoring.

This device indicates by displaying lightning arrows on the integrated display that there is voltage on the test point of the capacitive insulated support.

The device also has an integrated three-phase metering point. This is compared to LR requirements according to IEC 61243-5 and is suitable for phase testing using LR-phase comparators. A captive shroud protects the test sockets against dirt, dust and moisture.

WEGA system from Horstmann

The integrated voltage testing system WEGA meets the requirements for capacitive voltage testing systems of IEC 61243-5. It is a 3-phase system that displays the voltage states of a medium-voltage network:

On the front plate there are the LCD displays, the display test buttons and the three-phase LRM interface. A captive shroud protects the connectors from dust and corrosion. On the back panel there are the connections for the metering signals and the auxiliary voltage.

To display the arrow and point symbols on the display, no auxiliary power is needed, it is fed from the measured signal. These display functions are active even in case of a failure of the auxiliary voltage. For the additional functions (relay control, display illumination and active zero indication), an auxiliary voltage is required.

Short-circuit / earth fault indicators

All ring cable panels can be optionally equipped with a three-phase short-circuit / earth fault or other indicators. Here, all standard brands can be installed in the gae1250 and gae1250kmax series.

Cable plug componentsIn the gae1250 and gae1250kmax types, T-connection kits are to be used in the cable / connector panels or circuit breaker panels at the discretion of the operator. Connectable to bushings according to DIN EN 50181 connection type C (630 A / 1250 A) with outer cone and bolt contact (M16).

During the installation of the cable end terminals, the installation instructions of the manufacturer as well as the switchgear must be strictly followed.

Depending on the mounting depth of the cable connection sets, deep front covers or deep cable connection compartments may be necessary. Further connection possibilities are also available on request.

Cable connections (for LBS panels k and for rotating-arc CB panels lsf)T-connectors are used to connect single-phase or three-phase cables. It is also possible to connect more than one cable per phase. In these cases, compact design cable connection systems shall be used. The maximum allowed mounting depth is not to be exceeded. The maximum dimensions are given in the respective panel drawings. An example of this application is shown here:

Cable end terminals for fuse disconnector switches of type 1tsAs already mentioned, no separate cable end terminals are necessary for fuse disconnector switches of type 1ts in case of the gae1250 and gae1250kmax. In these panels, the functionality is integrated in the lower fuse holder for copper cables from 25 to 240 mm2 and for Al cables from 25 to 185 mm2.

Cable end terminals for vacuum circuit breakers of type 1lsvFor the connection of single or three-core cables, classic T cable plugs are used. Cable cross sections of up to 630 mm2 can be connected. There is also the possibility of more than one cable per phase to be connected (up to four cables per phase).

For switchgear that require metering and / or protective functions, Ormazabal offers suitable current and voltage transformers according to client specifications.

For protection and metering functions, as per IEC 60044-2 metal-enclosed, single-pole voltage transformers are optionally available directly above the gas tank on the vacuum circuit breaker panels (1lsv and 1lsvg), the busbar riser panel (1ht) and the cable connection panels (1at). These are connected as optional busbar or outgoing voltage transformers.

An upstream disconnector and earthing switch under SF6 is optionally available. This disconnector and earthing switch is operated via a manual drive, which is accommodated in the cable connection compartment behind the front cover.

For billing applications, classical current transformers from cast resin are used as current and voltage transformers within the gae1250 and gae1250kmax types in air-insulated metering panel 1m1.

For protection applications, toroidal current transformers are used. Normally, the toroidal current transformers are placed on the cable glands, as it is shown on the following figure. In addition or optionally, additional ring-core current transformers can be installed over the cable fixing irons.

The current transformers are optionally available with calibratable or calibrated metering core.

The installation or replacement of the current or voltage transformer is completed without intervention in the gas tank.

HRC fuses

Fuse base and transformer cable connection

The fuse base of gae1250 and gae1250kmax is designed as a plug-in system. All components are coupled to the current paths outside of the HV compartment via cast resin bushings. The connector system consists of the upper and lower fuse holder. The plug components made from silicone rubber are designed to be track-proof and arc-root free. The lower fuse holder additionally functions as a push-on cable termination. Application ranges for Cu cables from 25 to 240 mm2, for Al cables from 25 to 185 mm2. The HRC fuse links can be earthed at both ends via the earthing switches in the SF6 tank. The fuse base is accessible only in case of an activated earthing switch. Fuse dimension: 442 mm, with extension adapter fuses of 292 mm dimension can be used, too.

Selecting fuses

Use only HRC partial range fuses according to the current selection table no. 12248573 according to DIN 43625 with up to 88 mm Ø, for protection of distribution transformers 6, 12 and 24 kV. Other types of fuse should be used only after consultation!

Recycling and end-of-lifeIn the manufacturing facilities of Ormazabal, the appropriate environmental management systems are implemented that meet the requirements of the international standard ISO 14001 and are certified by the Environmental Certificate.

The gae1250 and gae1250kmax system cubicles were designed and manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the international standard IEC 62271-200.

Structurally, they have a hermetically sealed gas tank, which can guarantee the full operation of the system over the entire expected lifetime of 40 years (IEC 62271-200).

At the end of the product life cycle, the SF6 gas content must not be released into the atmosphere. Instead, the gas used for treatment and recycling is recovered in accordance with the requirements of standards IEC 62271-303, IEC 60480 and guide CIGRE 117. Information on safe and environmentally sound disposal is available upon request from Ormazabal.
