COUNSELOR’S CORNER
Seven Self-Concept Builders - continued
#1 Show them how to build up others
#2 Model optimism
#3 Allow them to experience adversity
#4 Have I taught my kids any practical life skills?
#5 Focus on effort, perseverance and character, not intelligence
#6 Remember that criticism is never constructive
Love them for who they are. Of all the human emotional needs unconditional love is probably the most important. Some parents live through their kids, trying to create kids that make them look good to others. Other parents spend too much time trying to change their child’s basic inborn tendencies, for example, changing a child who was born shy into an extrovert, or turning a basically clumsy child into a star athlete.
It’s likely true that parents feel some embarrassment when our child doesn’t act as we think they should. It’s also likely true that parents wish down deep that in some ways our child were a little bit different than they are. However, here is the challenge for us, teacher and parent alike:
#7 Show our kids each and every day that there is nothing they can do that will decrease our love for them.
