The Mr & Miss Filipino
Culture 2008 is set at 3pm on
October 19, 2008 at Tongsong
Auditorium in Hwehwadong.
This competition is not just
about physical beauty and
charming personality. As its
title suggests, it is about being
a Filipino. It is about how the
participants embody and por-
tray the positive cultural traits
and values, talents and skills,
intelligence and convictions,
dreams and aspirations of the
Filipino.
This event is not just for
entertainment but for a greater
purpose. It is conceived in
order to raise funds to assist
fellow Filipinos in Korea who
are in emergency and difficult
situations because of urgent
health, labour, and immigra-
tion problems; and to sustain
our educational support pro-
gram for children in the Phil-
ippines.
The eleven candidates are
not people with extraordinary
qualities. They are just like
you and me. Young men and
women who come to Korea to
work in order to realize their
dreams for their beloved fami-
lies back home. But their cour-
age in stepping forward to
sign up sets them apart from
the rest of us. At the outset,
they may have various reasons
for joining. But their willing-
ness to help the Hwehwadong
Catholic Filipino Community
achieve the charity purpose set
for this event is even more
commendable.
Let me remind the partici-
pants that this is not about
beating the others and getting
the crown. Indeed, in this
competition, the exposure,
personal growth and friends
are the gains that you will cer-
tainly treasure even after the
lustre and glitters of the crown
have faded away. The privi-
lege to show the world your
best as a Filipino and the best
in the Filipino is your shining
moment, your lasting prize,
and your crowning glory.
To our honourable judges,
on whose shoulders lay the
burden to determine the wor-
thy winners, our deep appre-
ciation for accepting the cru-
cial task. Let me quote for
you then what an anonymous
writer said, “It's beauty that
captures your attention; per-
sonality which captures your
heart.”
To those who would come
out as winners, congratula-
tions! However, your respon-
sibility does not end after you
have been proclaimed. For
such moment is but the begin-
ning of your duty to live up to
your title as Mr and Miss Fili-
pino Culture 2008.
To all the persons behind
the scene, the organizing com-
mittee led by Dr. Emely and
Mr. Edgar Balista; and the
preparation committees who
perform equally important
tasks, my sincere gratitude for
your hard work to make this
occasion fruitful.
To our co-organizer, the
Onfino, and our sponsors --
Philtrust, and Supergem, you
have been always supportive
of our projects and programs,
thank you so much. Your gen-
erosity may bear fruit a hun-
dredfold. May you also gain
the community’s increasing
support. To Fr. Theophilus
Choi for sponsoring our venue,
a million thanks.
To all of you, who support
this project, thank you for sell-
ing and buying the tickets.
Take pleasure, not only in
watching this event, but also
in the thought that you are part
of a noble cause that will
benefit our Kababayan in need.
As you witness this competi-
tion and make your own judg-
ment as to who should be the
Mr & Miss Filipino Culture
2008, let me give you a word
from Hellen Keller that runs
this way: “The best and most
beautiful things in the world
cannot be seen or even
touched - they must be felt
with the heart.”
Please support this project
and help a kababayan in need!
Buy your ticket, have the
chance to win the raffle prizes,
and enjoy watching the Mr &
Miss Filipino Culture 2008!
You may buy the tickets from

Birthday GreetingsBirthday GreetingsBirthday GreetingsBirthday Greetings
Ginoo at Bb.Kalinangan
Ngayong araw, sino ang tatanghaling Ginoo at Binibin-
ing Kalinangan.
galan. Fighting!

FREQUENTLY CALLED NOS. +SCRIPTURE GUIDE+
"For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them" Matthew 18:20 Prayer moves mountains! Prayer calms a troubled heart! Prayer with two or three people are far greater than the prayer of one!
One time I received a news from my sister-in-law where my children’s security was again in dan-ger. This news made me tremble all over because the thought of a previous experience suddenly be-came so real in my imagination. I cannot live without my children. I wanted to fly back to the Philippines at that very instant to protect my children but I couldn’t. I wanted to run and throw my arms around them so they won’t be hurt but it was simply impossible. I also felt guilty because I wasn’t there when they needed me. I was so helpless.
My friend Nina was online yahoo messenger at that time. I shared with her my dilemma. She tried to calm me down but I was already hysterical and sob-bing. I wanted to scream but nobody would help me because the Indian, Vietnamese and Mongolians who were in their study carrels won’t understand me. I was so helpless.
Nina invited me to pray with her. Pray with her?
How? She reminded me of the power of God and the power of prayer. Prayer moves mountains! Prayer calms a troubled heart! Prayers with two or three people are far greater than the prayer of one! How could I ever forget the power of prayer? Gradually, I was back to my senses.
Nina and I prayed online-chatting. We exchanged prayers and petition to just put my children under the mantle of His protection. That His blood protects and keeps them from any harm. I offered my helpless-ness, my fears, my doubts, my weaknesses, and my guilt. It was a total surrender. Lord, I cannot do any-thing anymore. My human power is limited. Take charge of
everything.
It was the best prayer experience I’ve ever had. The joy and peace I felt after that was unexplainable. The presence and power of God was so real. He made his power and presence felt when I was most weak. It was an experience of total surrender. He was in our midst. God’s omnipresence is marvel-ous. He is indeed powerful.

CATHOLIC FAITH: Patron: Physician and Surgeons
Feastday: October 18
Luke, the writer of the Gospel and the
Acts of the Apostles, has been identified
with St. Paul's "Luke, the beloved physi-
cian" (Colossians 4:14). We know few
other facts about Luke's life from Scripture
and from early Church historians.
It is believed that Luke was born a
Greek and a Gentile. In Colossians 10-14
speaks of those friends who are with him.
He first mentions all those "of the circum-
cision" -- in other words, Jews -- and he
does not include Luke in this group. Luke's
gospel shows special sensitivity to evan-
gelizing Gentiles. It is only in his gospel
that we hear the parable of the Good Sa-
maritan, that we hear Jesus praising the
faith of Gentiles such as the widow of Za-
rephath and Naaman the Syrian (Lk.4:25-
27), and that we hear the story of the one
grateful leper who is a Samaritan
(Lk.17:11-19). According to the early
Church historian Eusebius Luke was born
at Antioch in Syria.
In our day, it would be easy to assume
that someone who was a doctor was rich,
but scholars have argued that Luke might
have been born a slave. It was not uncom-
mon for families to educate slaves in medi-
cine so that they would have a resident
family physician. Not only do we have
Paul's word, but Eusebius, Saint Jerome,
Saint Irenaeus and Caius, a second-century
writer, all refer to Luke as a physician.
We have to go to Acts to follow the
trail of Luke's Christian ministry. We
know nothing about his conversion but
looking at the language of Acts we can see
where he joined Saint Paul. The story of
the Acts is written in the third person, as
an historian recording facts, up until the
sixteenth chapter. In Acts 16:8-9 we hear
of Paul's company "So, passing by Mysia,
they went down to Troas. During the night
Paul had a vision: there stood a man of
Macedonia pleading with him and saying,
'Come over to Macedonia and help us.' "
Then suddenly in 16:10 "they" becomes
"we": "When he had seen the vision, we
immediately tried to cross over to Mace-
donia, being convinced that God had called
us to proclaim the good news to them."
So Luke first joined Paul's company at
Troas at about the year 51 and accompa-
nied him into Macedonia where they trav-
eled first to Samothrace, Neapolis, and
finally Philippi. Luke then switches back
to the third person which seems to indicate
he was not thrown into prison with Paul
and that when Paul left Philippi Luke
stayed behind to encourage the Church
there. Seven years passed before Paul re-
turned to the area on his third missionary
journey. In Acts 20:5, the switch to "we"
tells us that Luke has left Philippi to rejoin
Paul in Troas in 58 where they first met up.
They traveled together through Miletus,
Tyre, Caesarea, to Jerusalem.
Luke is the loyal comrade who stays
with Paul when he is imprisoned in Rome
about the year 61: "Epaphras, my fellow
prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to
you, and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas,
and Luke, my fellow workers" (Philemon
24). And after everyone else deserts Paul
in his final imprisonment and sufferings, it
is Luke who remains with Paul to the end:
"Only Luke is with me" (2 Timothy 4:11).
Luke's inspiration and information for
his Gospel and Acts came from his close
association with Paul and his companions
as he explains in his introduction to the
Gospel: "Since many have undertaken to
set down an orderly account of the events
that have been fulfilled among us, just as
they were handed on to us by those who
from the beginning were eyewitnesses and
servants of the word, I too decided, after
investigating everything carefully from the
very first, to write an orderly account for
you, most excellent Theophilus" (Luke
1:1-3).
Luke's unique perspective on Jesus can
be seen in the six miracles and eighteen
parables not found in the other gospels.
Luke's is the gospel of the poor and of so-
cial justice. He is the one who tells the
story of Lazarus and the Rich Man who
ignored him. Luke is the one who uses
"Blessed are the poor" instead of "Blessed
are the poor in spirit" in the beatitudes.
Only in Luke's gospel do we hear Mary 's
Magnificat where she proclaims that God
"has brought down the powerful from their
thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has
filled the hungry with good things, and
sent the rich away empty" (Luke 1:52-53).
Luke also has a special connection
with the women in Jesus' life, especially
Mary. It is only in Luke's gospel that we
hear the story of the Annunciation, Mary's
visit to Elizabeth including the Magnificat,
the Presentation, and the story of Jesus'
disappearance in Jerusalem. It is Luke that
we have to thank for the Scriptural parts of
the Hail Mary: "Hail Mary full of grace"
spoken at the Annunciation and "Blessed
are you and blessed is the fruit of your
womb Jesus" spoken by her cousin Eliza-
beth.
Forgiveness and God's mercy to sinners
is also of first importance to Luke. Only in
Luke do we hear the story of the Prodigal
Son welcomed back by the overjoyed fa-
ther. Only in Luke do we hear the story of
the forgiven woman disrupting the feast by
washing Jesus' feet with her tears.
Throughout Luke's gospel, Jesus takes the
side of the sinner who wants to return to
God's mercy.
Reading Luke's gospel gives a good
idea of his character as one who loved the
poor, who wanted the door to God's king-
dom opened to all, who respected women,
and who saw hope in God's mercy for eve-
ryone.
The reports of Luke's life after Paul's death
are conflicting. Some early writers claim
he was martyred, others say he lived a long
life. Some say he preached in Greece, oth-
ers in Gaul. The earliest tradition we have
says that he died at 84 Boeotia after set-
tling in Greece to write his Gospel.
A tradition that Luke was a painter
seems to have no basis in fact. Several
images of Mary appeared in later centuries
claiming him as a painter but these claims
were proved false. Because of this tradition,
however, he is considered a patron of
painters of pictures and is often portrayed
as painting pictures of Mary.
He is often shown with an ox or a calf
because these are the symbols of sacrifice -
- the sacrifice Jesus made for all the world.
Luke is the patron of physicians and
surgeons.

Nakapanood ka na ba ng Circus? Lubhang nakaka-
Palagi ba itong nasa iyong tabi at
kasa-kasama?
hanggan. Amen!

GINOO AT BINIBINING KALINANGANG
FILIPINO
Johnny Maliglig
Ginoo at Binibining Kalinangang Pilipino

kaitaasan.
Masarap magmahal at may
minamahal Ngunit kung ang buhay naman ay
mapapagal Itatanong muli kanino ako sasandal Aking panahon muling babagal.

Hermie Garrobo
May nakilala akong Pinay kanina sa
Hyewa. Kakilala siya ng isang nakilala
ko sa simbahan. Ismarte, maporma,
sigurado sa sarili. Kuwento niya di niya
kinaliligtaan magsimba ng Linggo
basta’t puwede.
Walang trabaho. At malayong mas
malaki kinikita mo kaysa sa maraming
mga college graduates sa atin.”
Palagay ko’y marami ring mga Pinoy
ang tulad ni “Kathy.” Hindi man maka-
kuha ng mataas na marka sa pamantasan,
Dean’s Lister naman pagdating sa UL
(University of Life). Kung ako ang
tatanungin, matalino si “Kathy”.
Marunong sa buhay. May diskarte.
paano magpursige kahit mahirap, at
kung paano maging mas malapit sa
Diyos sa gitna ng mga alinlangan.
Kung ako ang tatanungin, cum laude
material si “Kathy”. Isang mabuting
halimbawa sa mga kabataang Pinoy na
nangangarap maging matagumpay sa
buhay. Binigyan ako ni “Kathy” ng in-
spirasyon. Ang inspirasyon na magpur-
sige, magpakatatag, at patuloy na ma-
nalig sa Diyos. Gusto kong maging katu-
lad ni “Kathy” na marunong sa buhay.
Sana’y mas marami pang Pilipino ang
matutunan ang mga ito – ang tumayo sa
sariling paa, magpursige at magtagum-
pay. Siya nawa.
SANAYSAY atbp.
TAKIP-SILIM
ni Bro. Joel Tavarro
Sumisikat ang haring araw sa umaga at
naghahasik ito ng enerhiya sa buong
daigdig. Gayundin naman ang buwan na
kahalili niya sa pagbibigay ng liwanag sa
kadiliman at silbing tanglaw sa malalim
na gabi. Muling dudungaw ang araw
pagsapit ng bukang-liwayway. Katulad
May umaalis at may dumarating upang
humalili o pumalit. Kung bakit kapag
dumarating na ang ganoong sandali ay
tila napakahirap tanggapin. Masakit ka-
pag nawala ang nakasanayang kasama,
kausap at palaging nakikita. Bakit ba
ganyan ang pakiramdam ng tao? Bakit
nasasaktan ang ating kalooban at nalu-
lungkot kung may umaalis? Halimbawa
sa magkasintahan, nagkasundong maghi-
hiwalay ngunit tila napakahirap tang-
Tayo man ay
nagtitiyaga at nagpapakahirap sa pag-
tatrabaho dito sa Korea. Minsan nang
sumikat sa buhay natin ang umaga. Kaya
marapat lamang na huwag nating ak-
sayahin ang bawat sandali. Gumawa
tayo ng mabuti at kapaki-pakinabang sa
kapwa.
ran. Mahabang panahon na rin ang tat-
long taon na inilagi at madagdagan pa
muli ng panibagong dalawang taon ang
ilan. Masasabing masuwerte ang maka-
pagtrabaho dito sa Korea sa kabila ng
milyon din ang walang maayos na
hanap-buhay sa ating bayan at walang
makain. Marami na rin ang may sapat na
ipon o nakuntento na lamang sa nakamit
nilang biyaya. Anu’t-ano pa man sa huli,
tayong lahat ay muling magbabalik sa
lupang ating sinilangan, ang Pilipinas.
Katulad ng batis, malayang du-
madaloy ang tubig upang magbigay ng
buhay sa kapaligiran. Masarap inumin
ingkod, sikapin nating maging maayos
ang ating ginagawa. Maging mabuting
ehemplo tayo sa bawat isa. Minsan ay
hindi maiwasan ang bangayan at naka-
pagsasalita tayo sa kapwa ng hindi ma-
ganda sa hindi sinasadyang pagkakataon.
Tao tayo na may kahinaan na kahit
anong lalim na ng pang-unawa ay nasa-
sagad din. Subalit kung dumarating sa
ganitong tampok, agad pawiin sa
pamamagitan ng paghingi ng tawad ng
sa gayon bago pa magkalayo ay tangan
pa rin ang maganda at kabutihan na
napulot buhat sa paglalakbay sa buhay.
Mainam na panatalihin natin ang magan-
dang pangalan bago tayo bumalik sa at-
ing bayan. Hindi hamak na napakandang
mapag-usapan ka lalo na kung ito ay
tungkol sa iyong kabutihan. “Mas ma-
buting piliin ang malinis na pangalan
kaysa pilak o ginto o anumang kaya-
manan.”(Kawikaan 22:1)
