The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research is opening the doors to its Nedlands facility for its annual Open Day on Saturday, 27 August.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the latest in research breakthroughs and treatments for major diseases, including cancer and heart disease, in the Perkins innovative and cutting edge facilities.
With awards for its impressive architectural design, the Perkins building has seen major discoveries in the fi ght against cancer, diabetes and neuromuscular diseases take place inside its very own walls.
A recent achievement saw the Perkins launch a biomedical engineering program in conjunction with The University of Western Australia, which merges the fi elds of medicine, science and engineering together to deliver innovative medical solutions for patients.

Unleash your inner scientistPerkins medical researchers will become tour guides for the day and lead visitors through the stunning exhibition spaces, which off er a visual history of medical research and a glimpse into the high-tech future of health science.
Visitors will have an opportunity to unleash their inner scientist and learn more about what some of WA’s brightest minds are doing to improve the health of the community.
Get a behind-the-scenes look through the Perkins laboratories where researchers work as meticulous pioneers investigating innovative solutions to tackle illness and disease.
Perkins laboratories carry strict regulations, so visitors are advised to wear closed-in shoes if they would like to enter the labs and see the high-tech equipment and research workspace up close.
The foyer features 4m-high LED screens showing fl uorescent cell images and huge male and female MRI images with accompanying monitors that focus on research being conducted in the building.
Other displays explore historical highlights in medical research, interactive touch screens and an original sample of mould used by Alexander Fleming to grow penicillin, signed by the revolutionary scientist himself.
There will be something for everyone, with hands-on activities taking place in the research-grade teaching laboratory, the Lotterywest BioDiscovery Centre.
Plenty of food and coff ee options will be available from 9.30am to 3.30pm at the award-winning Coff ee Anatomy cafe situated on the ground fl oor of the Perkins building.
