Ottoman-Turkish Admiral & Cartographer
PIRI REIS
Piri Reis (1465-1554) was an Ottoman-Turkish admiral,
geographer and cartographer.
PIRI REIS
In 1511 Piri Reis went to Gallipoli (Gelibolu) where he drew his first work of art;
the first world map in 1513. Piri Reis produced a very detailed map of the
cost of Africa and South America, including rivers far upstream, and the Caribbean
Island. Most astonishingly, Piri Reis accurately depicted the islands along the coast of
Antarctica that have remained under an ice shelf for the past 4.000 years.
