TTU Physical Plant Engineering Services CADD Manual 2/25/2011
1. INTRODUCTION
Through the years CADD technology has expanded and grown into a multi-faceted way to store and communicate information. This CADD manual hasbeen compiled to provide consistent & standard criteria by which all CADDdrawings shall be constructed for Texas Tech University Physical Plant
Engineering Services (TTUES).
2. CADD SYSTEM
TTUES currently operates in the Autodesk 2005 family of products. Thisfamily includes, but is not limited to, AutoCAD, ADT, LDT, Map as well asseveral others. All drawings submitted to TTUES shall be of a compatibleformat.
3. DRAWING PLANNING & SETUP
Drawing Setup
The typical TTUES working drawing shall be setup to take advantage ofPaper Space/Model Space. Paper Space shall include the title block andall of the information associated with it. All sheet specific informationshall be contained in Paper Space as well. Model Space shall containthe objects necessary to convey the design intent. All objects in ModelSpace shall be drawn at full scale (1:1) and be located at an origin of0,0,0 unless an accurate survey of the site has been completed. (Thelower left hand corner of a building or site shall be at 0,0,0)
A set of templates (*.dwt) have been established to facilitate in the set
up of drawings that are to be done by/for TTUES. These templatesshould be utilized in the creation of all drawings by/for TTUES.
The standard sheet size for projects done by/for TTUES is either34x22 or 17x11.
Drawing Template
Standard drawing template files have been created according to thestandards that are outlined in this manual. These templates aredesigned to aid in the creation of a standard product. These templates
shall be used by everyone internal to TTUES as well as all AE firmsworking on projects for TTUES.

File Naming Principles
Each file shall contain a whole project (i.e. architectural, mechanical &electrical sheets). Accordingly files shall be named to fit the followingpattern. First, the discipline code followed by a hyphen, next the sheetsequence identifier followed by an optional user-definable, four-character code. The following illustration shows the pattern.
4. TEXT
All general text on TTUES drawings shall be plotted at a height of 1/16 andbe font style RomanS.shx. The only exception to this is the title block, coverand user inserted standard blocks.
5. LAYERS
The AIA/NIBS National CADD Standard layer names are organized as ahierarchy. This arrangement allows expansion and addition of user-definedextensions to the layer list. Layer names are alphanumeric and useabbreviations that are readily identifiable.Layers shall be named in a fourteen-character system with the first twocharacters denoting discipline code; the next four characters denoting themajor group followed by a hyphen; the following four characters denoting theminor group followed by a hyphen; the final four characters denoting status.

The discipline code is a two-character field with the second characterbeing a hyphen. The defined discipline codes are as follows:
A ArchitecturalC Civil
E ElectricalF Fire ProtectionG GeneralH Hazardous MaterialI InteriorsL LandscapeM MechanicalP PlumbingQ EquipmentR ResourceS StructuralT TelecommunicationsX Other Disciplines
Z Contractor/shop drawings
Major Group
The major group designation identifies the building system. Althoughthe major groups are grouped logically with specific codes, it ispossible to combine major group codes with any of the disciplinecodes. For example, a drawing might contain the following layers:
A-WALL Architectural WallsS-WALL Structural Walls
Minor Group
This is a four-character field for further differentiation of major groups. For example, A-WALL-PRHT indicates architectural, new, wall, partialheight.
Status Field
The status field is a four-character field designator that differentiatesnew construction from remodeling and existing to remain. It is onlyneeded when phases of work must be differentiated. A-WALL-PRHT-DEMO indicates architectural, wall, partial height that is to be demolished. Defined valuesfor this field are as follows:
EXST Existing to remainDEMO Existing to be demolished

Annotation
Annotation comprises text, dimensions, sheet borders, detailreferences, and other elements on CADD drawings that dont representphysical aspects of a building. Annotation is designated as follows:
*-ANNO-DIMS Dimensions*-ANNO-KEYS Keynotes*-ANNO-LEGN Legends and symbols*-ANNO-NOTE Notes*-ANNO-NPLT Construction lines, non-plotting information*-ANNO-REDL Redline*-ANNO-REVS Revisions*-ANNO-SYMB Symbols*-ANNO-TEXT Text*-ANNO-TTLB Borders and title blocks
(Note: * represents a discipline code)
User-Definable Fields
The minor group field can be defined by the user to meet their specific
needs. This should only be done if a defined layer does not apply.
Master Layer List
Users may add user defined layers in situations where a layer doesnot exist in this standard to accommodate the need or the layerneeded is project specific. These user defined layers must follow theconventions set forth by the aforementioned layer guidelines. ThisMaster Layer List in by no means all-inclusive but shows the mostcommonly used layer names. The Master Layer List is located inAppendix B of this manual.
6. PLOTTING
Each layout tab should represent one, and only one, plotted drawing
A sheet should always be plotted at full scale (1=1) from paper space.
The origin of the sheet should be located at the lower left, outsidecorner of the sheet border, not the title block border.
All layouts need to be plotted using extents.
5

8/23
TTU Physical Plant Engineering Services CADD Manual 2/25/2011
A sheet should not contain any information placed outside the titleblock border, with the exception of the plot stamp block
Please note that a guide to pen assignment/line weight and colors canbe found in APPENDIX A.
7. PEN SETTINGS
A standard CTB file has been established for use with all drawingsby/for TTUES. This file is called TTUES.
8. LINETYPES
Standard linetype formatting shall be adhered to. An example of thestandard TTUES linetypes is located in APPENDIX A. The variableLTSCALE shall be set to one-half (1/2) of the dimscale. The variablePSLTSCALE shall be set to one (1).
9. XREF
All drawings by/for TTUES shall utilize xrefs. Xrefs shall include, but isnot limited to, titleblocks and floorplans. Xrefs shall be located in thesame directory/folder as the drawing files that they are referencedinto. This eliminates the need for saving full path. The followingdiagram illustrates a typical xref scenario:
The variable VISRETAIN shall be set to one (1). This allows for layermanipulation in the drawings themselves instead of relying on the xreflayer control.

10. ABBREVIATIONS
A list of approved abbreviations has been established for use on alldrawings by/for TTUES. These approved abbreviations can be locatedin APPENDIX C of this manual. Periods shall not be used unless the
abbreviation can be confused with a whole word. For example if onewas to abbreviate Number as No it would require a period to avoidpossible confusion.
11. DRAWING COURTESY
The following list is an example of things that should be done in everydrawing before exiting it and/or submitting it for review.
1. Save the file in the fist layout if multiple layouts are used.2. Make certain that ONLY the layers that are needed for plotting
are left on.
3. Ensure that the layout is zoomed to extents and that there areno extraneous objects outside of the titleblock area.
4. Purge the drawing files to ensure that it is as compact and cleanas possible.
5. Set all attribute pulldowns to by layer
APPENDIX A
GRAPHICAL STANDARDSAll graphical features of a PPES working drawing shall adhere to the
aesthetic examples given in APPENDIX A of this manual. All graphicalrepresentations in APPENDIX A can be found in digital format in theU:\STNDRD directory. The AutoCAD DesignCenter may be used inorder to insert these features. All annotation objects (i.e. planidentifiers, detail/elevation marks etc.) are scaled according to thestandards contained in Appendix A so that they need only be insertedand text edited.
