Abstract:KatieTinker,LegalCaseManagerattheHalifaxRefugeeClinic,willgiveapresentationabouttheworkofherorganizationanditsroleinassistingclientsthroughCanada’srefugeedeterminationprocedure.ThetalkwillgooversomebasicfactsaboutthelawsandprocessesgoverningrefugeesandrefugeeclaimantsinCanada,beforefocusingontheparticularchallengesandexperiencesof

thosewhocometothiscountryinsearchofasylum.Ms.Tinkerwillinvitetheaudiencetoreflectonwaysinwhichimmigrationstatuscansignificantlyaffectotherareasoflife,fromhealthandwellnesstotheabilitytoparticipatefullyinsociety.ThispresentationwillhighlighttheimportantrolegrassrootsorganizationscanplayinfillingsomeofthelegalandservicegapsfacedbyrefugeeclaimantsandotherswhoseektogainpermanentresidenceinCanada.ItwillalsoaddresssomecurrentconcernssurroundingCanada’srefugeelawsinlightofrecentworldevents,includingabriefdiscussionoftheSafeThirdCountryagreementbetweenCanadaandtheUnitedStates,whichsomenowargueshouldbesuspendedorterminated.

Synopsis:TheUnitedNationshasstatedthattheSyrianCrisisisthebiggesthumanitarianemergencyofourera.WiththeSyrianconflictnowonitssixthyear,millionsofpeoplecontinuetobedisplaced.AfterSpringisthestoryofwhathappensnext.Byfollowingtworefugeefamiliesintransitionandaidworkersfightingtokeepthecamprunning,viewerswillexperiencewhatitisliketoliveinZaatari,thelargestcampforSyrianrefugees.Withnoendinsightfortheconflictorthisrefugeecrisis,everyonemustdecideiftheycanrebuildtheirlivesinaplacethatwasnevermeanttobepermanent.

Abstract:RussDayewilldiscussthepartnershipbetweenSt.Andrew’sUnitedChurchHalifaxandThePresbyterianChurchofMinyara,Lebanon.ThispartnershipsustainsaschoolforrefugeechildrenandamedicalclinicforrefugeesandlocalpoorinAkaar,thepoorestregionofLebanon,whosepopulationhasdoubledwiththeswellofrefugeesfromSyria.RusswillalsoreportonhisvisitstorefugeecampsalongtheLebanon-Syriaborderin2015and2016.
