Refugee Symposium: Let them Land, Let Them Stay The global refugee population has exceeded 60 millions for the first time since WWII and today 1 in every 122 people on earth is now a refugee – The United Nations. Friday, March 3rd Share your thoughts #SMURefugeeSymposium 10am 11am Feature Speaker: Katie Tinker - Halifax Refugee Clinic: Assisting Refugee Claimants Through Canada’s Refugee Determination Process Abstract: Katie Tinker, Legal Case Manager at the Halifax Refugee Clinic, will give a presentation about the work of her organization and its role in assisting clients through Canada’s refugee determination procedure. The talk will go over some basic facts about the laws and processes governing refugees and refugee claimants in Canada, before focusing on the particular challenges and experiences of those who come to this country in search of asylum. Ms. Tinker will invite the audience to reflect on ways in which immigration status can significantly affect other areas of life, from health and wellness to the ability to participate fully in society. This presentation will highlight the important role grassroots organizations can play in filling some of the legal and service gaps faced by refugee claimants and others who seek to gain permanent residence in Canada. It will also address some current concerns surrounding Canada’s refugee laws in light of recent world events, including a brief discussion of the Safe Third Country agreement between Canada and the United States, which some now argue should be suspended or terminated. Burke Theatre Auditorium A Burke Building Saint Mary’s University SMU Campus Map 11am 12noon Feature Speaker: Dr. Rohini Bannerjee – From Jahabhi Bhai to Jews: The Refugee Stories of Mauritius Abstract: As Francophone Mauritian writer Ananda Devi states, "nous avons besoin du passé pour savoir que nous sommes." The multi-faceted and complicated history of Mauritius is one that firstly tells the story of indentured male migrants from India, jahabhi bhai who were convinced that boarding ships to cross the Kala Pani (Indian Ocean) to work temporarily on Mauritian sugar plantations would lead to a prosperous live back home. Little did they know they would go from being willing passengers to forced exiles. Secondly, we will explore the little known history of deported and incarcerated Jews in Mauritius during the Shoah of WWII, refugees fleeing not only the gas chambers of Nazi Germany, but the restrictive immigration policies of British-governed Eretz Palestine. Speaker’s Bio: Recipient of the 2012 Saint Mary’s University Student Association Award for Overall Excellence in the Field of Education, Dr. Rohini Bannerjee is the Chairperson of the Department of Modern Languages & Classics where she is also Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies. She is also a Faculty member of the Asian Studies, International Development Studies and Graduate Women and Gender Studies programs at Saint Mary’s University. Born and raised in Dartmouth, NS, Dr. Bannerjee joined Saint Mary's University in 2007 after earning her Doctorate in French Studies from Western University in 2006. Her primary area of research is in the Francophone Literatures and Cultures of the Indian Ocean.
