What is a legend?• A legend usually includes an element of truth, or is based on
historic facts.
• A legend is a semi-true story, which has been passed on from
person-to-person and has important meaning of symbolism for the
culture.
• Legends are stories that have been made up.
• A legend is a story about mythical or supernatural beings or
events.
Maui fishes up the North Island
• Legend has it that New Zealand was fished from the sea
by the daring demigod Maui.
• Maui’s four brothers went fishing, but left Maui home.
Later Maui went fishing alone.
• He took out his magic fishhook and threw it to the water.
The hook went deeper and deeper.
• After some time, the hook touched something and he
tugged the hook out of the water.
• It was a huge fish and the fish became to an island.
• For today, the North Island of New Zealand is shaped
like a huge fish.
Why the Kiwi lost its wings• Long ago in the deep forests the Kiwi could fly as well as any
bird.
• One day Might Tane( father god of the forest) called all the birds together and asked them for help.
• “Some of you must to give up your life in the bright sunny treetops and live on the forest floor.”
• Someone must eat all the creeping things that are killing our forest.
• Two birds: parrot and owl they did not like this idea.
• Fineally Tane spoke to beautiful Kiwi and Kiwi agreed to descended to the forest floor, his wings became useless, but his legs grew strong for running. His beautiful feathers fell out, as he turned grey as a shadow.
• Tane smiled and proclaimed: “ You will became a symbol of this land, and the people will be proud to take you name.”
