Big SIR - Al Edwards (916) 847-5582
Another month has passed and we are still dealing with
Covid 19. It seems like we are going to be dealing with
COVID for some time. It is becoming more obvious that
getting a large group of older folks together is not the
right thing to do. Hope everyone and their families have
been staying safe and continue to practice safe distanc-
ing and wearing face masks.
Branch 49 BEC continues to meet ( Zoom) on a monthly
bases. We had our annual executive meeting that was at-
tended by approximately 146 attendees. The major topic
of conversation was how do we keep in touch with our ex-
isting members and how do we recruit new members. We
will continue to publish our monthly newsletter and en-
courage all members to help find new members, knowing
that this becomes more difficult without having our
monthly meetings. We are still on a 2 month revolving
meeting schedule. Therefore there are no lunches
planned for September and October.
The golf group continues to have their weekly tourna-
ments with good attendance.
We will keep everyone informed as
we progress through this process.
Please stay safe. Little Sir- Joe Artim

Sept. 2020 TREASURERS REPORT
Hope all of you are masking-up and staying
safe. As reflected in the monthly Treasurer’s
Report our expenses for insurance, tax
accounting, and newsletter slowly continue.
The club Board continues to meet monthly
via telephone or Zoom to conduct business. Our volunteer
callers will be back on the job when we are able to
schedule our next Luncheon.
I wish you all good luck, and stay healthy.
Jerry Thomas, Br 49 Treasurer
I have an old German beer stein in my office
to which I have never paid much attention.
On the stein is a man with a stein of beer in
one hand and with the other he is holding a string of
sausages above his mouth and apparently eating sausage
after sausage. Embossed on the stein :"Life is One
Damned Thing After Another." A phrase coined in the
early years of the last century.
We have all heard the quote but it is as true today as
ever. Start with the Covid virus early this year and now a
summer of social unrest and California wildfires. Ap-
pears we will have an ugly election campaign season. New
reports are surfacing that this may be a very active flu
season. Just what we need. Life truly is One Damned
Thing After Another! As we head into the autumn of the
year we need to take care of ourselves and help others
whenever possible. We will persevere.
Be safe! Big SIR— Al Edwards

SIR Dan Freeman died on Wednesday, August 26th
of a heart attack. Dan was 82 at the time of his
death, and had been a member of Branch 49 since
November of 1999.
Ron Schultze has to go through another round of
Chemotherapy for his bladder cancer.
Our former librarian, Gerry Jenkins, died August
29th. He has had COPD, and heart failure for sev-
eral years. Gerry joined SIR in 2013, and volun-
teered for several jobs throughout his time with us.
He was 91 at the time of death. We mourn his pass-
ing, a nicer man could not be found.
On a brighter note, Charles Lyons called to inform
me that he and wife Diane were doing just fine,
thank you, and reports of their decline were greatly
exaggerated.
Buz Honsa is scheduled to play golf next week, so his
wrists have evidently healed.
Phil Moeszinger, 93, and a member of our branch
since 2000, has late stage bladder cancer, is in hos-
pice care and confined to bed. We pray for respite
for Phil, and we pray with his family for him.

BOWLING REPORT
There has not been a resolution to
bowling alleys being allowed to resume
operations. The Northern California
Bowling Association has recently sent
an e-mail to known members asking them to sign an on-
line petition to the Governor to reinstate bowling. I still
have not heard from our league secretary at Fireside
Lanes regarding a status report. It looks like the best
we can hope for is a shortened season. Even if a short-
ened season is proposed, many of our members would
“opt out” due to the increased vulnerability of persons
our age. Perhaps we could switch to playing an outdoor
sport such as horseshoes. Wayne Philpot
Bob Collier, 78, died September 5th. He had suffered
from cancer for several years, and it came back aggres-
sively recently. Bob joined the branch in June, 2012, and
volunteered as the attendance co-chair, along with Don
Marnach, ever since that time. Here is a picture of him, on
the right, with Don at his side, and Jerry Thomas and Bill
Mutschler left of Don.
