The Honors Seminar: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for Urban
Communities
Learning and Teaching Conference (LT@UC)October 10, 2017
Course Description• Provide students with an experience to research
future applications of multi-rotor UAVs. • Explore applications of multi-rotor UAVs for benefit
of the community (futuristic and innovative). • Internalize the many challenges and restrictions
(legal, ethical and regulation); • Propose a new and unique UAV business, apply
research methods to develop technology, • Experiment with prototypes of quadrotors that they
could fly assemble and fly safely in a controlled manner.
Course Learning Outcomes• Develop a strong research capability through the process of inquiry,
hands-on-experiential learning, and a structured approach to multi-disciplinary design.
• Understand the way inter-disciplinary synthesis of technology can be used to positively impact the community.
• Appreciate the challenges associated with ethical/legal/regulatory dilemmas.
• Explore the essence of entrepreneurship through preparing a business canvas model for a unique idea working as a team
• Experience the joy of flight by flying a quadcopter• Acquire understanding of UAV rotorcraft flight, UAV sub-systems,
construction and soldering skills.• Learn steps to design, build, assemble, test and fly a quadcopter.
• Reflect upon the hypothesis concerning the Value Proposition. • Utilize the customer discovery process with the ability to pivot based
on feedback received.

Why Use AirTheo?Stay Safe :• Let AirTheo survey high risk areas
(i.e. Post-disaster scenarios, mountainous terrain, etc.)
Save Time:• Can cut ground crew operation
time in half
• Post-process results on site
Reduce Cost:• Less than a quarter of the cost of
plane/helicopter surveys
Easy to Use:• Compact/easy to transport
• Sets up within minutes
• Capable of multiple types of

APSyAerial Perimeter System
APSy: an emergency response perimeter staging UAS- Arrives at the scene of an accident ahead of emergency services and deploys a light & sound based perimeter. - Creating an operational perimeter before arriving allows ERS faster response to the situation at hand. - The perimeter also mitigates traffic flow, clearing traffic efficiently and minimizing traffic- A working zone will be established, and the first responders will have a safe area to quickly work and save lives.
The cornerstones of APSy – Our Value Proposition- Safe perimeter set-up before first responders arrive on scene- Ease of use by any responder, even with minimal training- Multiple perimeter applications with no special knowledge required
Why APSy? - SAFETY: APSy is a UAS designed to create safe work zones- LIVES: APSy will be used to increase emergency response speeds- UTLITY: APSy allows for perimeter deployment anywhere

SkyPainter- taking painting the town to the next level!
Brandon Miller, 5th year Aerospace Engineering
Skypainter will seek to improve safety and efficiency in painting large structures, such as bridges, buildings and stadiums using UAV technology.
SurveysWe received an overwhelming amount of support for this idea. Many encouraged us to look into using anti corrosive and dryfallpaint. Many construction companies and paint contractors said our product would be very useful in their line of work, increasing safety and reducing cost significantly.
Challenges1. Weather2. Finding way to prep bridge before
painting3. Monetary investment4. Software development5. Hardware development (especially to
avoid paint build-up)
Benefits 1. Eliminates scaffolding, improving safety2. Eliminates heavy machinery, reducing
emissions3. Reduces traffic detours caused by painting

ROADWATCHWhat is it?RoadWatch is a drone system that gives users real time road condition updates for flooded and icy roads so they will be able to drive safely to their destination.
Customer DiscoveryFirefighters
• 8.2/10 average in favor of using drones for their department
End-user• 78% would be ok with a
drone flying over them• Majority use map apps
while driving
BusinessSeveral ways to make revenue:• Offer service to fire
departments• Partner with map apps
(Google and Apple) or weather stations
Truck drives to take-off zone
Drone is prepared tofly and takes off

Value Proposition: By using RoadWatch, lives and property can be saved form the dangers of icy and flooded roads
DATAHDrone Air to Air Hyperlapse
• Hyperlapse is an exposure technique in time-lapse photography, in which the position of the camera is being changed between each exposure in order to create a tracking shot in time-lapse sequences
• UAV generated Hyperlapse is an untapped niche market • DATAH could potentially be one of the first commercial Hyperlapse
