COMPUTER NETWORK
COMPUTER NETWORK
A computer network is a group of interconnected computers .
It consists of two or more computers that are linked in order to share resources (such as printers and CDs), exchange files, or allow electronic communications.
Lnked through cables, telephone lines, radio waves, satellites, or infrared light beams.
NEED OF NETWORKING
File sharing
Resource sharing
Remote access
Communication and collaboration
Data protection
NEED OF NETWORKING
TYPES OF NETWORKS
LAN WAN
Depending upon the geographical area covered by a network, it is classified as:
TYPES OF NETWORKS
LARGE AREA NETWORK
A LAN is a network that is used for communicating among computer devices, usually within an office building or home.
Is limited in size, typically spanning a few hundred meters
Requires little wiring, typically a single cable
)
LARGE AREA NETWORK
ADVANTAGES OF LAN
Users can communicate with each other very
easily.
Users can access their files from any
workstations.
When a new version comes out, it only has to be
loaded onto the server
Workstations can share peripheral devices like
printers.
ADVANTAGES OF LAN
DISADVANTAGES OF LAN
DISADVANTAGES OF LAN
Area covered is limited
Networks are difficult to set up and need to be maintained
by skilled technicians.
Costs for equipment and technology is very
expensive WAN.
Low bandwidth therefore it is easy to lose connection
METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK
It is a network that is utilized across multiple buildings
Commonly used in school campuses or large companies
with multiple building geography to a single metropolitan
area
Examples of MAN: cable TV network
METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK
ADVANTAGES OF MAN
• This type of connection can connect numerous locations
together in one municipality.
• MAN can cover a wider area than a LAN
• By running a large network connectedness, information can
be disseminated more widely, rapidly and significantly.
ADVANTAGES OF MAN
DISADVANTAGES OF MAN
DISADVANTAGES OF MAN
WIDE AREA NETWORK
A Wide Area Network is a network spanning a large geographical area of around several hundred miles to across the globe
The largest WAN in existence is the INTERNET.
WANs often connect multiple smaller networks, such as local area networks (LANs) or metro area networks (MANs).
It can be connected through cable, fiber or satellite.
WIDE AREA NETWORK
ADVANTAGES OF WAN
ADVANTAGES OF WAN
Expensive things
(such as printers or phone lines
to the internet) can
be shared
Data can be better
controlled when it's
centralized and
consolidated
Share information/ files over a larger area
It allows some
business persons to work from
home while still being
able to access work interfaces.
DISADVANTAGES OF WAN
allows business persons to work from home
Need a good firewall to restrict outsiders
requires network supervisors to maintain a network
Security is a real issue
DISADVANTAGES OF WAN
