Boris Johnson’s new cabinetBoris Johnson has carried out his long-awaited reshuffle, delivered from a position of personal strength. With the reshuffle more extensive than most expected with both poor performers and others who were loyal but seen as expendable moved on, Johnson has signalled he feels emboldened and secure in his leadership.

It shows he is ready to refocus attention on his government’s priorities as the nation continues to emerge out of the pandemic and move on from Brexit. This reshuffle reveals a determination to demonstrate progress in housing and education, and of course health.

The levelling-up agenda has now been promoted to a clear ministerial responsibility, confirming the former ‘red wall’ seats are still an influential battle ground for policy development.

These Secretaries of State will be facing a formidable Treasury and Number 10 – Ministers will need to win the backing of senior leaders to move forward with significant changes, reinforcing the need for organisations to manage their relationships with multiple decision makers in government, and ensure wide ranging support can be deployed for their objectives.
