The Price of Community. Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten and Naturrecht
Feyerabend in Comparison
Alberto Pirni
Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna
The distinction – and the dialectic – between price (Preis) and dignity (Würde) are introduced
in famous pages of the Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten. As it is known, in the same
period of preparation of that work, Kant held regularly lectures on natural law. In
particular, the course named Naturrecht Feyerabend (Wintersemester 1784) offers some
conceptual clarifications and additions of great interest with respect to that distinction.
They contribute thus to better define the conceptual outcome of the entire discussion on
the categorical imperative developed in the Grundlegung: the moral community of all reasonable
beings.
Can mere intuitions represent objects?
Andrea Faggion
Universidade Estadual de Londrina
In the first Critique, Kant says: "if I take all thinking (through categories) away from an
empirical cognition, then no cognition of any object at all remains; for through mere
intuition nothing at all is thought, and that this affection of sensibility is in me does not
constitute any relation of such representation to any object at all" (KrV, A 253/B 309). On
the other hand, one can read on Kant's published lectures on logic, the Jäsche-Logik, that the
savage's sight of a house is a cognition of an object and, at the same time, it is a… mere
intuition (see AA 09: 33). I am not willing to handle this apparent conflict of assertions by
appealing to the authority of the Critique over and above any lecture, even a published one.
Instead, I intend to show that the savage's sight is not properly described as a "mere
intuition", because it cannot lack categories, but only those empirical concepts possessed
by "someone else who is acquainted with it [the object] determinately as a dwelling
established for men" (idem, ibidem). I will base my point on the Kantian concept of
"object", arguing that the thesis according to which a mere intuition could represent an
object presupposes the concept of an "object" as a thing in itself.
Zum Entwicklungsstand der Rationaltheologie Kants in seiner Vorlesung im
Wintersemester 1783/84
validez práctica universal, si bien no pura.
Direito inato e justiça no Naturrecht Feyerabend
Clélia Aparecida Martins
Universidade Estadual Paulista
Fernando Silva
Centro de Filosofia da Universidade de Lisboa
O objectivo do presente ensaio é duplo: numa primeira instância, investigar tão brevemente
porém, a coexistirem.
É meu intento ver qual a evolução do
The contribution of Kant’s Lectures to the foundation of the Architectonic
Gualtiero Lorini
Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore
The main goal of the paper is to assess the impact of the Lectures on metaphysics and
philosophical encyclopaedia on the relationship between critique of pure reason (as an
activity of reason itself) and transcendental philosophy, as it is presented in the chapter
devoted by Kant to the Architectonic of pure reason within the Doctrine of Method of the Critique
of pure reason. Such a relationship can be regarded as the critical side of the confrontation
between metaphysics and ontology, Kant has carried on since his first Lectures on
metaphysics, and seems to come to a significance turning point within the course on the
philosophical encyclopaedia held by him at the end of the Seventies. In this course Kant
seems to consider critique of pure reason and transcendental philosophy as the same, on
the contrary, in the Critic, he places a strong distinction between them, in order to underline
that the critique should be placed before transcendental philosophy, even though both play
a preliminary role towards metaphysics. Such a situation may perhaps be clarified through
the Kantian identification between ontology and transcendental philosophy, emerging from
the Lectures on metaphysics, and can be better understood by interpreting the whole
problem into an architectonic perspective.

Kant on Political Freedom in the Naturrecht Feyerabend
Günter Zöller
University of Munich
The talk presents and assesses Kant's proto-republican account of civil society in the only
preserved transcript of his lectures on natural law based on Achenwall's Iuris naturae, the
Nachschrift Feyerabend from 1784. The focus is on Kant's moral grounding of private and
public law in human freedom and on his original identification of civil or political society
with republican or self-rule.
Der Begriff der Freiheit in den Nachschriften von Kants Kolleg über Anthropologie
(1772-1785)
Heiner F. Klemme
Vernunft (1781), d.i. in der kritischen Zeit forschen.
Metaphysik Volckamnn (1784-5) (AA XXVIII.1, S 351-460)
Metaphysik v. Schön (Ontologia) (1789-1791?) (AA XXVIII.1, S 461-524)

The degrees of merit and moral imputation and the degrees of rewards and
punishments in the Vorlesungen über Ethik
Jean-Christophe Merle
Université de Nancy
In the Lectures on Ethics, an important issue is the existence of degrees of merit and demerit,
as well as of imputation, on the one hand, and of rewards and punishments, on the other
hand. This paper will inquire into the presuppositions and implications of this assertion for
Kant’s conception of duty in the Lectures on Ethics. This inquiry will not only entail some
comparison and contrast with his later moral theory, but it also point out the remaining
influence exercised by the assertion of such degrees on Kant’s theory of punishment.
lógicos do entendimento.
Kant ´s conception of miracles in his Vorlesungen
Juan A. Bonaccini
Universidade Federal de Pernambuco
Evidence in Kant´s Lectures on rational theology as well as in some Reflexionen seems to show
that Kant considered miracles as not being possible at all. Thus, some authors defend that
Kant rejected miracles and gave a Humean account thereof. However, several passages in
Kant´s Lectures on Metaphysics (for instance, in Metaphysics L1, Mrongovius, K2 and Dohna)
seem to point towards a different conclusion, in so far as Kant aknowledges in those
courses the possibility of miracles. Moreover, it has been argued that Kant does not deny
the possibility of miracles in his Religion. My main concern in the present paper is to explore
this issue in the context of the Kantian Lectures and Notes and present an interpretation
concerning Kant´s stance on miracles. I intend to show that Kant accepted the possibility
of miracles and hold his own ground between Baumgarten and Hume.
O Sumo Bem como Praemium Remunerans das Ações Morais
Julio Esteves
Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense
Economy and Teleology of Evil in Kant’s Anthropology
Leonel Ribeiro dos Santos
Universidade de Lisboa
If we read Kant’s Lectures on Anthropology [Vorlesungen über Anthropologie] from 1775/6
onwards, in coming to the section «On the character of humanity» or «On the character of
the human species» we may well be scandalized by its insistence on the theme of evil in
human nature, expressed by the terms Bösartigkeit, Unvertragsamkeit, Ungeselligkeit and
engraved in recurring explicit declarations stating that «evil radicates in the nature of men»
[Diese Bösartigkeit liegt allen Menschen in der Natur], or that «man is by nature not good»
[Der Mensch ist von Natur nicht gutartig]. But, at the same time, we are surprised by the –
also insistent – thesis according to which all good attained by man, be it in society, in
culture or in morals, derives from that original evil in his nature, which constitutes
something as the sting that provokes and stirs him to develop his talents (also posited in
him by nature), and, therefore, to individually produce all the good he may earn and enjoy
Our first objective is to sketch a topographic of the theme in the Vorlesungen über
Anthropologie, as well as to identify not only its correlation with other topics, but also Kant’s
possible interlocutors concerning such a pessimistic conception of the human species.
Secondly, we aim to search whether this theme is present in other Kantian writings, be it
posthumous or published in life (particularly relevant is the essay «On radical evil in human
nature», published in April 1792 in the Berlinische Monatsschrift and then integrated as the
First Part of Die Religion innerhalb der Grenzen der blossen Vernunft, 1793). In order to do so, we
shall develop a comparative study of the different approaches and try to realize the
persistence (or not) of these theses, or any possible evolution in Kant’s perspective. Finally,
the objective is to interpret the relevance of this topic in understanding a crucial point in
Kant’s thought: a point intertwining anthropology, political philosophy, moral philosophy
and philosophy of religion.
Der Begriff der "Gemeinschaft" in Kants Vorlesungsnachschriften
Margit Ruffing
The prudence [Klugheit] and the rules for guiding life. The development of the
pragmatic normativity in Kant’s Lectures on Anthropology (Collins, Parow,
Friedländer, Menschenkunde, Busolt)
Nuria Sánchez Madrid
Universidad Complutense de Madrid
Our contribution will aim at covering three main purposes: a) to reconstruct the unity of
Kantian discourse about boredom [Langeweil] and hobby [Kurzweil], contained in various
sections of the Lectures on Anthropology and in the second book of the Anthropology from a
pragmatic point of view; b) to assign to Kantian theory of sociability a place within his notion of
pragmatic Anthropology and c) to make visible under these anthropological materials the
idea of life as a steady struggle for escaping the representations which remove the ground
[Abgrund] of existence. We shall move from the following Kant’s remark, contained in a
Reflexion probably dated between 1776 and 1778, which points out that: “Only pleasure and
displeasure are the absolute, because they are the life itself” [Lust und Unlust machen allein das
The initial assumption that we attempt to
prove supports that the formation of an own pleasure is one of the first tasks that reason
requires from the finite rational being which is man. Actually, this task will provide to
human life a specific structure, made of words, beautiful spectacles and entertaining social
games which make it intelligible and protect the human species from an incognizable
Abgrund. As a corollary of such a hypothesis we will discuss whether pleasure, by depending
of the actions which human beings choose in order to pass the time, offers the first
attempt to recognize what is man in Kant’s philosophy, at least within the aesthetical
boundaries of its existence. We shall also tackle the fact that the experience of pleasure
forces man to face the demand of providing himself not only means to conquest its own
happiness, that is, for achieving the complete satisfaction of its inclinations (KU, § 83, AA
05: 434, footnote), but also those means which give a sense and value to his existence
based on the human character as a being submitted to moral laws, that is, as the unique final
end [Endzweck] of nature (KU, § 86, AA 05: 448). We shall take especially into account,
besides the double volume 25 of the Academy Edition of Kant’s Writings, the Cambridge
Edition of Kant’s Lectures on Anthropology, coordinated by the professors A. Wood and R.
Louden.
de Metafísica" (The unity of the self: Between Rational and Empirical Psychology
in Kant's Lectures on Metaphysics)
Paulo Renato de Jesus
Universidade Portucalense Infante Dom Henrique
"anima", "animus" e "mens".
Morality for Humans: Ethical Theory in Kant’s Vigilantius Lecture
Robert B. Louden
University of Southern Maine
In this essay I use Kant’s Vigilantius lecture notes as a window on his normative ethics,
insofar as they are applied to human beings in particular, as opposed to rational beings as
such, paying particular attention to what these notes reveal about the development of his
ethical theory. The Vigilantius notes are lectures that Kant gave in 1793/94 on the
metaphysics of morals, just a few years before publishing the Metaphysics of Morals (1797),
and they are also contemporaneous with the publication of Religion Within the Boundaries of
Mere Reason (1793). Both of these published works are undoubtedly “impure” in significant
respects. For instance, the major theme in Part One of Religion is the radical evil in human
nature; and the Metaphysics of Morals is an exploration of what morality requires of embodied
beings with specifically human needs, tendencies, and drives. However, because of both the
class lecture format and the audience, the Vigilantius notes provide a fuller account of some
of Kant’s positions than does the Doctrine of Virtue (= the second half of the Metaphysics of
Morals, which essentially contains Kant’s mature moral theory). And, whether because of
the format and audience, or because his ideas were still developing, some of Kant’s
arguments about particular aspects of our moral psychology and ethical obligations differ in
interesting ways between Vigilantius and the later Doctrine of Virtue. I will also consider
several aspects of Kant’s impure normative ethics as revealed in the Vigilantius notes, with
special attention to the questions of what these notes reveal about 1) the evolution of
Kant’s conception of a metaphysics of morals, and 2) the content of the duties that human
beings have to others as well as to themselves.
Entendimento, sentido interno e apercepção
Sílvia Altmann
Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul
