SAAMTREK: ‘RUK ONDERWYSSTELSEL REG,’ SÊ ATKV
Dissipline byhuise, skolein die visierGARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz

An empowerment project in Delft got a ma-jor boost recently when they received a do-nation of Sewing machines from South Afri-can Breweries.
Vision 2002 is a youth and women empow-erment project in the area that is growingand making a difference in the community.
Rowan Dunne, corporate affairs special-ist for SAB, said that the company was veryimpressed with what the organization wasdoing and wanted to help them in this man-ner.
“They are making a major difference inthe community and growing all the time,”he said.
“With this donation we hope that we willhelp them empower more people in this ar-
ea.”Ursula Joubert, explained that the organi-
sation had grown from offering counsellingat school to expanding to skills develop-ment.
“Initially we started because schools inthe area needed help with problem chil-dren,” she said.
“From those counselling sessions we sawthe need to expand to lifeskills developmentfor the youth, and for women.
“It kept on growing as we partnered withthe FET College Boland where many of ourclients have gone for skills training in a va-riety of trades.
“Last year some of them started the sew-ing courses and that is why we are so happywith this donation so that they can use theseskills to empower themselves financially.”
Deon Britz also from the organisation
pointed out that there were still many plansfor growing the organisation.
“It is important that we fight the risingpoverty and unemployment in the area,” hesaid.
“Eventually we want to build our owntraining and multi-purpose centre so thatwe can help much more people closer tohome.
“We are currently busy with an audit onunemployed youth in the area so that wehave figures to work with when we ap-proach potential sponsors.
“With these figures and a data base wewill also be able to see where we can accom-modate them in our training programmes.”V For further information about the project or register with the organisation call Deon on 084 888 0597or visit their offices at 79 Eindhoven Road, Eindhoven, Delft.

Over the past few months the Delft Policingprecinct have experienced a number of seri-ous crimes such as murders, attemptedmurders and other gang-related incidents.
According to Delft station commanderBrigadier Hendrik Jansen, some of these in-cidents can be viewed as being gang-related,which they police under the ambit of Opera-tion Combat.
Jansen pointed out that his station man-agement has set certain intervention meas-urements in place, as part of OperationCombat, to deal with the scourge and to pre-vent and or reduce these gang related inci-dents.
“Since the beginning of April this year
these measures have gotten us some goodarrests and these measures will be ongoinguntil we get rid of the gang leaders (Highfly-ers), their runners and drug peddlers,” hesaid.
He attributes the success achieved by thepartnerships formed through the CPFwhich include, safety partners, neighbour-hood watches, businesses, community, churches, schools and community leaders.Jansen placed a lot of emphasis on the con-tributions of the religious fraternity.
“Through the CPF and churches the part-nership was initiated through conductingopen air church services, crime awarenessmarches, community meetings and otheractivities.”
Jansen also pointed out that the emphasiswill be on community involvement in their
assistance during crime prevention opera-tions, with visible patrols and for residentsto come forward with valuable and reliableinformation.
Looking at statistics from the area Jansenpointed out that in 37 cases of murder thatwere opened 50 arrests were made.
“When it comes to attempted murdersthere were 34 arrests in 28 cases,” he said.
“In 12 cases of house robberies we made14 arrests and made 10 arrests in five casesof hijackings. When it comes to robberywith firearms there were 25 cases reportedand we made 43 arrests.”
Brigadier Jansen concluded that the fig-ures provided should be an indication of thecommitment of themembers ofDelft to erad-icate crime and to create a safe environmentfor the residents.

Some young stars were shining brightlywhen the Equilibrium organisation hostedits annual awards celebration. With the Elsies River based organisation
celebrating their fifth anniversary, the par-ticipants in their All Star LeadershipAcade-my gathered in Parow to receive theirawards.Equilibrium director Yolande Groep was
very proud of their achievements and excit-ed about the growth of the organisation overthe past five years.“We had humble beginnings at The Range
High now we are rendering services to 13schools in and around Elsies River - and stillgrowing,” she said proudly. The organisation is fundedbyDepartment
of Social Development (DSD) for Early inter-vention, providing services to children andyouth involved in using drugs.“We believe we also complement the De-
partment of Education’s drug testing initia-tive by providing evidence based programsto vulnerable youth and their families,” shesaid.“What we have been doing is proving suc-
cessful and that is why people believe in usand we want to expand this service to theBelhar area and beyond.“Equilibriumvalues partnerships and are
expanding our victim empowerment pro-gramme, which we hope will also be fundedby DSD as they have expressed an interest.“We have been providing supportive and
therapeutic services to victims of abuse andcrime on an ongoing basis.”It is through these supportive services
that they developed a more qualitativeyouth development program, the All StarLeadership Academy, with emphasis onsport, academics and skills.“With founder Elroy Duckitt being ap-
pointed as coordinator to the PresidentAwards, we hope to take this programme togreater heights.“Equilibriumhas proven that we are com-
mitted to a sustainable service and are cur-rently facing the challenge to secure morecentral office accommodation since the de-mand for our services has increased to thepoint that are our base at The Range Highis proving to be inadequate,” she said.V For more information about their activities call 021931 7745 during office hours or their websitewww.equilibruimcentre.org.

ing on my existing style of rap trying tobring forth a unique loud expression of selfwhich should not be mistaken for aggres-
sion,” he says.“My team all form part of what makes
Bix-C the brand it is and comprises of C&EProductions whowere responsible for creat-ing the beats for all the tracks on the CD.“This includes Heinz “Einstein” Gunther
the engineer responsible for recording, mix-ing and mastering this 10 track EP and thenthere’s my great friend Anzal Fester who’sconstructive criticism plays an importantrole in developing my unique sound.”With a rap style that is fast and hard-hit-

There was plenty of festive fun at theDelft Community Hall last Friday whenHOPE Cape Town hosted its annual Chil-dren’s Christmas Party.
Over 300 childrenenjoyed theactivitieswhich included jumping castles, a photobooth, face painting and loads of other en-tertainment. The children were alsotreated to lunch and ice cream.
According to HOPE Cape Town DonorRelations Manager Fahim Docrat, seeingthe smiling faces was worth all the effort.
“This event has now become a high-light in the community social calendarand gives us the opportunity to bring joyto these children and provide a safe spacefor them to be children,” he said.
“Often children in such communitiesare forced to grow up much too soon andwe hope and call for wider long term ef-forts by all stakeholders to ensurewe cre-ate and sustain an environment wherewe take better care of our children andsupport efforts to nurture the next gener-ation.
“For this one day we helped the chil-dren forget all their troubles. I personallyenjoyed sharing their joy when we hand-ed out Christmas parcels which includeda toy, to each child.”

Christmas party fun for kidsThe men of Bonteheuwel will be makingtheir presence felt onSundaywhen the JointPeace Forum (JPF) takes to the streets to op-pose all forms of violence against womenand children.
“This is the time for all strongmen to cometogether for peace,” says Grant Abrahamsfrom the JPF.
“We want to invite all men to be part ofthismarch, even the youngsters, from all or-ganisations, churches andmosques, to high-light the plight and importance of the roleof men in our society, especially today as westrive for Peace in Bonteheuwel.
“During this critical period of 16 Days ofActivism against the Abuse of Women andChildren, we are also marching to declarethat we will walk with our brothers and ac-tively oppose all forms of violence againstwomen and children,”said Abrahams.
“We will not look away and no longer bebystanders. We declare that we will be re-spectful towards women and our children, and we will endeavour to always be a role-model to younger boys in our communities.”
Themarch will be taking place on Sunday7 December, starting across from the Mora-vian Church at 15:00 and down to the Bonte-heuwel civic Centre.
Abrahams said since their last PeaceMarch in October, the area was still experi-encing a relative lull in shooting incidents.
“Extra police reinforcements are seen allaround Bonteheuwel, however, we as menrecognize the role we have to play in thecommunity as we have seen what happenswhen fathers are absent or not playing anypositive role in a child’s life.
“This is a definitive but necessary learn-ing curve for allmen andwewant to see howthe tide turns if and when men play that fa-therly role.”

Tea time has become a winning time forDelft South Primary after they won amajorcompetition relating to the beverage. In March this year, Trinco Tea launched
a CSI campaign for schools around thecountry called “Walk a Mile in my Shoes”.The goal was to provide school shoes for
children in need. For at least seven millionSouthAfrican children, the lack of even onepair of shoes is a stumbling block to gettingan education.Whether the road is too rough or the wea-
ther too cold, their bare feet mean they so-metimes can’t get to school.By collecting as many empty Trinco Tea
packets as possible and bringing them to
school, learners were able to put theirschool in the running to win R20 000 worthof school/computer equipment, and for thetop performing schools in each region theyreceive a brand new pair of school shoes forall the children at their school. The schools’ communities were encoura-
ged to join in and support the school child-ren in their area by also collecting TrincoTea packets.During November the celebrations were
in full swing at the school inDelft who cameout tops in the Western Cape. They received R20 000 for their wish list
for computers, projectors, a printer andwa-ter dispenser.

With a new drummer and a string of bigshows behind their name, De Wallen are po-wering on into the new year.TygerBurger last spoke to the Kuils River
bandbefore the release of their debut-album,Dirty Deals in December 2013.Since then they’ve supported bands like
aKing, Taxi Violence and Van Coke Kartel, performed at Ramfest and toured to Johan-nesburg and the Garden Route.“It was my first time up to Joburg, not a
big fan,” guitarist Pieter Bekker says, ad-ding that Ramfest was also a bit of an adven-ture.He got lost picking up equipment in Cape
Town and made it to the festival in Helder-stroom with minutes to spare.“He literally pitched up as we were going
on stage,” frontman Jeandré Swanepoelchips in.“We’re the same ol’ De Wallen, same ol’
nonsense, still don’t know what the hellwe’re doing,” he says. But despite the band’s “devil-may-care”
attitude, they still spend a lot of time wor-king on breaking into the industry. They released a new single, “Heart Rate
Rocker”, in May and Jeandré says it’s morelight hearted than Dirty Deals.“After the first album we had time to re-
flect on the writing process and back thenwe thought we were going to be a seriousrock ‘n roll band, but we realised we’re notall that serious.”Jeandré describes “Heart Rate Rocker” as
a “tongue-in cheek jingle about the girlsfrom Stellenbosch” and fans can expect mo-re of the same when they record again. There will be another new element to af-
fect in band’s soundwhen they record again, thanks to new drummer Andre Wentzel.“We’re lucky to have snapped him up be-
cause he’s a little older than us and a lot mo-re business minded.”Local fans may recognise André as the
drummer for 3rd World Spectator, who re-cently parted ways.“You’ll maybe start seeing some more
groove, funk andhip-hop beats,” Pieter says.“The hip-hop element is definitely going
to be introduced,” Jeandré adds.De Wallen hopes to release a new single
early next year. “The rest of the albumshould follow shortly after,” Pieter says.Fans can catch thematMercury onFriday

After taking out my car licenseI forgot to display it on mywindow. When I saw a trafficofficer writing out a fine, heexplained that there were twoamounts on it – R500 if yourlicense lapsed or R300 if youtook it out and did not displayit.
So it’s two weeks later and Iwant to pay it. I first try theinternet, as fines can be paidvia Absa. The only problem isthere is no reference numberon the fine, so the paymentwill not go through.
I then go to Absa, where thecashier tells me that theTraffic Department’s system isoffline and I have to wait for asecond letter through the SAPost Office.
No problem. So I go off tothe Traffic Department inDurbanville, where I am toldthat they can only take theR500 payment, not the R300one. This can only happen atthe Parow Traffic Department.
I then called the mainnumber, where I was told thatthe fine has not been capturedso I can’t pay it.
Why issue fines if they knowthat the offender can’t pay it?
Is the Traffic Departmentrun by human beings? I ambeginning to wonder...

After reading the SMS fromAnonymous, I feel the need to“bite back” (TB SMSes, 26November).
So many who regard them-selves as “dog lovers” forgetthat while they are at work, away for a weekend or attimes even a week, we the“lonely, old or just selfish” aresubjected to the continuous sadhowling, whining and barkingfrom many a neglected “pet”.
‘Dog lovers’ oftenneglect their pets
You leave home at the crackof dawn, returning some eighthours or more later.
The so-called “pet” is givenits food and then the owner isoff to bed and sleeps like a log, never hearing the night bark-ing. And so it is every singleday.
How many genuine lovinghours are spent with theanimal? As far as you areconcerned your dog protectsyour home and the barking “istheir way of communicating”.To whom, I ask?
To the phrase “get a life”,have you not noticed that wewho complain about the bark-ing are very much alive. We arethe ones who hear and are notdeaf to the sounds of an animalin distress, just surviving a“dog’s life” day after day.

VERTEL MY DIE OU STORIEEpos
Verkeersbeamptesnou selfoonkorps
Want moorddadige maniakkeverkies ongewapende slagoffers.
CHARL VAN WYKEpos
‘Goeie ouens’ metwapens maak verskil
LEWENSKIEKIE

Ekis elke eerste en laaste Saterdag by dievlooimark by die Brackenfell-biblioteek.
Ek hetgaan inkopies doen by CapeGate LifestyleCentre en my motor gesluit. A. Alexander
Anoniem
V Ruwiel se “fishy” vermoedens oor MajikForest is absolute onsin. Omliggende buurte is sieken sat daarvoor. Dankie, Andrea! Anoniem
V What are people’s problem with Hadi-das? How does one remove a bird from anarea? It’s not a rhino; the bird will just flyback. Unless you mean by remove and killit. Stop complaining about petty things. Louise, Durbanville

Sege wink virDurbiesSAREL BURGER
staar ’n opvolgbeurt Edgemead (114) in diegesig.
saal teen Vishoek (94) ná veral briljanteboulwerk deur Chad Fortune (6/5).
Werner Moolman (58), Richard Holman
(6/32) en Brendon Philander (3/25) het uitge-blink vir die Goodwood-span, wat sy tweedebeurt op 40/0 sal hervat.Kuilsrivier (87) het egter hotagter van
Avendale (248/6) gekry.
AWA’s ultimate fight night onThursday 11 December features a 23-man Coca-Cola Royal Rumble battlewhere the lastman standingwill exitthe ring with the most coveted belt. The current title holder is Miss
Gorgeous who vows to keep the beltfor a second year running eventhough he’ll be the first man ente-ring the ring and will have to battlethrough all 22 remaining wrestlers. If he manages to do that, he’ll be thefirst in AWA history to accomplisha back-to-back victory.Johnny Palazzio comes back all
guns blazing for thismatch to defendhis cruiser weight title he was ableto retain after a battle with Mr Mo-ney three months ago. This was thefight where Palazzio broke his legand continued in the ring despite theinjury. As for Mr Money, losing toPalazzio in the previous match me-ans he’ll have to wear a dress on thenight of the Royal Rumble – the re-sult of the lost challenge.Other superstars set to contestwill
be the All Africa HeavyweightChampion – the Missing Link,Shaun Koen, Max The Body, SammySwiegers, Ed-Electric and El-Marco.If you’re expecting absolute chaos, you won’t be disappointed in thismassive, unrestricted brawl. While the Royal Rumble will un-
doubtedly be the highlight of the eve-ning, it is by no means the onlymatch worth making the effort tosee. In fact, the AWA have preparedan extended talent pool for this eventand that means five intense bouts. The Parow Civic Centre once
again hosts the action and the firstfight starts at 19:30.

With a kaleidoscope of motorsport at-tractions on offer, Saturday’s finalmain circuit meeting of the year at
Killarney includes exciting national partici-pation and seems set to bring the seasonalcurtain down in style.Topping the bill, the opening round of the
new All-Africa Endurance Series is going tobe supported by the final leg of the PowerSeries sponsoredbyWingfieldMotors. In ad-dition, in a build-up to an attempt on the Af-rican truckpulling record, localmusclemanBen Visagie (Kraaifontein) is ready to at-tempt to drag a 20 ton truck a distance of 50metres along the Killarney main straight.
Longdistance matchupThe long distance three-hour race has at-
tracted entries from all the main centres inSouth Africa. Here it is going to be particu-larly interesting to see how the hugely po-werful 8.4 litre, V10 Dodge Viper in thehands of Gauteng’s Charl and Harry Aran-ges fares against newWestern Cape champi-on Francis Carruthers and Nick Adcock atthe wheel of the slick Juno SS3 that untilnow, has dominated the Sports and GT
events in the Cape this year.Others to watch in this one include Greg
Mills and Deon Joubert in a Pillbeam LMP100 that is being prepared for next year’sprestigious LeMans 24-Hour race, while Da-veAlhardeff and theLambert familyare sha-
ring Dave’s American Panoz V8.The Power Series includes events for the
brutal V8 Masters where although champi-onship leaderMarcelAngel is a fair distanceahead of the pack, he could still be caughtby Craig Jarvis. And with all the cars that
were damaged in thatmonumental pileup atthe start of theopeningevent lastmonthnowrepaired and back in action, there should bea full field. Then, whileWayneWilson (NissanPrime-
ra) and JesseHuggett (VWJetta) deserve ad-miration for taking on a full field of class ABeemers in the Midas Clubman events, itseems more likely that the winner’s laurelswill be claimed by an M3 in the hands of Ju-naid Slamang, Ebrahim Levy or Achmat Le-vy, or the spectacular Danie van Niekerk inhis 325.
Hard fightAlthough versatile Nick Adcock is to sha-
re a powerful sports car in the three-hour,it is unlikely to affect his potential title win-ning performance in the one make MakitaSupercar events. But he will have to outsco-re drivers like Brad Wadeley, Steve McCar-thy, Andrew Moffitt and Jarryd Evans. With class C exponent Paul Simonholding
an overall lead in the Jive GTi Challenge, this class is likely to be as hard fought as thefrontal battle in class Awhere second placedNian du Toit will be the driver to catch.
RACING: AN EXCITING RANGE OF BATTLES ON OFFER AT KILLARNEY
Sizzling season’s end
Francis Carruthers, leading the field in his Juno, will be the Cape Town hopeful for the African 3Hour Endurance Race.
